Supermarket Rip off for Bags Now

Jump to: Newest in thread

The Middle

I just have to rant here. Sitting outside the local tescos and had to do the buy a bag thing

So went looking for the canvas bags and suprise suprise they don't do them anymore. BUT.. For 3 quid you can have a one that is beside the tills. Or a bag for life for 10p that isn't big enough to fit 2 tins side by side.

Now I'm all for the 5p thing to a point but wtf is going on with the supermarkets using it now as a cash cow to squeeze more cash out of us all.

I'd like to say rant over but I'm feeling an email to watchdog comming on!!!! AUGHHHHH!!! @$##$$@$$

What I resent and find irritating us how all shops now assume that I either don't want a bag (I do) or that I brought my own (I don't) so I find myself either schlepping all my purchases around in my pockets or having to pay for bags independantly. I don't mind paying for bags, just give me them! I haven't developed a marsupial pouch since the start of October!

Go to Asda. Go to self service, get a few bags for life ( I got 5 last time) . Look for the barrcode on bottom underside of bag not the one on side. This is for free replacement bags it won't cost u anything ha ha and u get good bags.

I see....well keep them in the car boot whenever they go shopping OR if they don't have a car then keep it by the front door in the house so when you're about to head out they will all be kept in one big bag for you to take to the supermarkets..

ipso facto presto

A good few years ago Tesco used to sell blue plastic boxes (almost like a solid plastic shopping basket) which fitted to a special trolley. Think you could get 4 or 6 boxes on a double-tiered trolley

These were great, but for some reason just didn't catch on (down here anyway)

Still have 3 of the boxes and get strange looks when I go in supermarkets with them

there are loads of canvas bags in my tescos, located near the tills. Morrisons have their plastic bags for life by the tills too.

What pisses me off is Asda! on their self service tills there are no bags, you have to summon the attendant who is usually engrossed in some inane conversation with a colleague to come over and give you a bag and put it through the till for you.

I asked one of them why they were the only supermarket not to trust their customers as all the others have bags on the self service tills and trusted customers to put the right number of bags through. apparently its because of some cock up on their part whereby you can scan one of the barcodes on the bag for life and get it free

But the premise of this claim is that they cannot charge you 5p for a bag tat has their logo on it as then you will be essentially advertising them for free. How is that any different from buying branded goods and wearing them?

I don't believe chanel are exempt from the charge though. Having said that if they use paper bags then they are free.

In my opinion, the whole set up of paying for bags to save the planet is absolute bulls**t. If governments really gave a toss about plastic bags damaging the environment then they would ban them completely and force the plastic bag industry to make biodegradable bags.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Nearly all of my heavy duty canvas shopping bags have been given away freely. I've been using one for 10 years and it's still going strong.

I bought an Onya bag that lives in my handbag for those moments when you end up nipping into a shop.

If you are really desperate to get as much as you can from a plastic bag the Land of Pound sell a roll of swing bin liners (about 20 on the roll) that have handles. They now have a label on them that shows you can use them for shopping. They are bigger than the usual thin (now 5p) bag and are just as strong.

I think people who complain of paying for bags are f***ing cheap, 5p won't kill you even if you are on benefits.

This is forcing people to use reusable bags and drastically cut down on pollution. It takes 500 year for plastic to disintegrate. This should have been done ages ago.

And don't forget plastic bag aren't free for companies to buy. Stop complaining and being tight

At a major supermarket this afternoon I was sat in the car waiting for the mrs and I noticed two separate shoppers putting the wire baskets in there cars and driving off. Cause having my sense of humour I just laughed and thought fair play to you. It must be costing the shops a fortune

This super market bag thing really has stumped some people eh. It seems a big issue to buy 3p-10p plastic bag yet somehow easier to be taking wire baskets home even trolleys

"What I resent and find irritating us how all shops now assume that I either don't want a bag (I do) or that I brought my own (I don't) so I find myself either schlepping all my purchases around in my pockets or having to pay for bags independantly. I don't mind paying for bags, just give me them! I haven't developed a marsupial pouch since the start of October!"

I read an article somewhere saying there's a bit of a loop hole with this paying for bags malarkey. If the carrier bag has the shop name on it then you don't have to pay as you are advertising the company

This is being enforced I assume to reduce the amount of plastic bags circum navigating the world in the wind but the thing is they are still producing plastic bags just thicker ones that you pay for !!!!

"I think people who complain of paying for bags are f***ing cheap, 5p won't kill you even if you are on benefits.

This is forcing people to use reusable bags and drastically cut down on pollution. It takes 500 year for plastic to disintegrate. This should have been done ages ago.

And don't forget plastic bag aren't free for companies to buy. Stop complaining and being tight "

So true.

My mum used to weave old plastic bags together and make some funky new shopping bags. They were really strong, lasted years.

I don't mind paying for them but Asda take the piss. In Ipswich they won't have the cheapo bags at the self service til's, reason when I asked was becuase people might not pay for them so they have someone constantly there giving out bags for life, WTF, hail Tesco's where we aren't branded as possible theives before we have even started shopping, hence Asda go do one

not up on the rules of this bag charge. what about clothes shops? xmas coming, buy clithes as gifts, surely you need a bag with that purchase? have the shops included it within the price?

Thing tp ask yourself is whilst we and the media have been distracted & focused on the 5p bag thing what else this govt quietly sneaked into place you can bet it won't be beneficial to you

"I just have to rant here.

AUGHHHHH!!! @$##$$@$$

Is their own game theft?

Because that's what you're doing.

You could try a defence of ignorance, but you've just made clear you do have the 'mens rea' to dishonestly appropriate the bags.

The supermarket didn't bring in the tax and you're stealing from them.

Go to Asda. Go to self service, get a few bags for life ( I got 5 last time) . Look for the barrcode on bottom underside of bag not the one on side. This is for free replacement bags it won't cost u anything ha ha and u get good bags.

Play them at their own game

"In my opinion, the whole set up of paying for bags to save the planet is absolute bulls**t. If governments really gave a toss about plastic bags damaging the environment then they would ban them completely and force the plastic bag industry to make biodegradable bags.

"

The bags have been biodegradable for years. People in England don't know this because they don't save their bags. Catching up with the rest of the uk finally!

Do what I do help yourself to the cardboard boxes in the fruit and veg section, plenty around, and they're great for storing books and old VHS tapes and other assorted junk that invariably ends up down the charity shop.

Personally I feel the whole charging for bags arguements are rubbish, i don't necessary think its a bad idea but feel there are many downsides not really thought about.

1/Contamination-

Read the bottom of some of the bags(Tesco) it talks about using different bags for different food items ie raw, fish etc. It also mentions about wiping and disinfecting after use. Now don't know about you but after use how many people mark or remember which bag has been used for which. Also how many do indeed disinfect the bags...

Bag for life yes they may replace them for free but environmently that bag has still been used like a couple of times.

2/Energy costs-

How much energy does each bag for life take to produce compared to an old thin one Ie read somewhere (google yourself) that paper bags/cotton bags are much more enery intensive than plastic and would require reuse 4 times up to 100 times for cotton for it to be enery neutral with a plastic bag. Also the thicker plastic ones again need to be used a number times to be neutral.

Transportation is another aspect for the same weight/space of 30k cotton bags you can ship over 2.5 million plastic bags.

3/ Sexism/Discrimination-

As the average male compared to the average female doesn't carry a handbag, where the hell are we supposed to carry around these spare bags. Forcing most men to buy a new bag unless the shopping event is fully planned.

4/ Higher costs for the public-

You now have to buy bags obv., but also look at areas like rubbish, I personally used to use the shopping bags for rubbish they were great and free. Now I have to buy black bags as bags for life work out more expensive per bag and also don't hold as much due to handle design.

I think there are loads of other things that I've missed but they are things I've heard and believe or annoy me myself.

In terms of money going to charity its not mandatory although most supermarkets do, however it would be nice to find out whether its the full cost of the bags or just the 5p minimum charge that goes (ie on bags costing more than 5p).
