They say it takes 1000 hours to achieve a mastery of any subject or skill. If you had a 1000 hours, what would you devote them to, to become a 'master'? |

You'll find it's actually 10,000 hours to supposed mastery.
To bring that into focus, there aren't 10,000 hours in a YEAR...I remember doing the maths once, it was something like 3 hours practice a day, EVERY day for 10 years. |

I've been playing guitar for over 30yrs (almost daily) and I would never refer to myself as a master. There is ALWAYS something new to learn. |

"Malcolm Gladwell writes on this. If you haven't, you should check him out " the name definitely rings a bell. That's where I would have heard of it. |

The book on this is called Outliers. Both that and Tipping Point are great reads. |

Neurology and genetics, i am focusing on one of these right now.
What if you're a fast learner or fast at doing your work? I ended up doing 2 courses at once coz everyone else took all day to complete the work and i was sat bored all afternoon doing nothing coz i'd finished...asked to go home coz i was bored and they made me do more stuff instead.
It was the most boring learning experience of my life. |

That's only 125 working days.
That's not even remotely close to "expert or master for most crafts that's simply proficient.
If this 1000 hour figure were true anyone who did say woodwork in school would be a master carpenter |

How long did it take you to master the biochemistry needed to have a proper understanding of those two? |

Works out it it's your job with an 8 hour day just under 5 years
Seems about right not for "master" (as I'd say that for that title you need a certain level of personal talent for the field) but certainly enough to be well respected in your field. |

No biochemistry they're distinctly different fields.
But impressive it normally it takes a peron around 3 years with tuition |

I find biology pretty easy, especially if i learn about plants first. Genetics am struggling a bit, and the immune system i find i often struggle to get it. I've had good teachers luckily so getting there. |

But you're not talking about biology you're talking about biochemistry.

I disagree.
It depends on how you learn what you learn and how inclined to learn it you are.
I've got 1000 hours for things of interest to me, and 1000 hours for people who are interested in something I'm not |
