First, don't go chasing losses...it's too easy to get yourself in trouble.

Piece of advice I was given, only ever do it with money you could lose tomorrow and it not affect your life, not money that could pay the bills etc

Sounds dead obvious but many just see what can be won not what they can lose!

First thing is recognise you have a problem - well done!

Next step get proper help - all the betting adverts etc have reference to a helpline you can call I think if things get out of hand - a quick Google should find the name.

You can also self exclude from online betting sites - while you are in the right frame of mind if go in and self exclude from any you are a member of so even if the temptation cones back you can't place a bet!

Good luck fella, but get help before it destroys you!

Do what I did and delete everything on your computer and phone and tell yourself if you want to put a line on then go to the bookies. It makes it a lot harder to give over the money. When it's just a number on your phone it doesn't seem as bad.

Are you married? Maybe get someone else to handle your money until such time you can cope again.

Not going to preach about the humongous loss, but there must be someone close that can help you?

The land of grey peas and bacon

I lived with a compulsive gambler for 6 years and he blew pretty much everything and went to gamblers anon and I went to the family side of it, I ended up blocking internet sites and took hold of the money side... The first step is to address you have an issue once you have done that you are one step further to recovery

Plus I got him blocked from most betting sites after finding out which one he used it came to ahead after he used my wages the day I got paid and gambled it all...luckly I got it all back from the gambling site

There are support sites available often online ones and the smartains can also provide details of them...I would also suggest Google to research local support networks

Mate of there's one person to help... its yourself!

Nobody can make you stop, bit you have made the first move and admitted to yourself you have a problem, now you MUST make the next move and seek help.

Please message me if you need to speak to someone.

Ask yourself this,.... does the thrill of winning outweigh the pain of loosing??

Not a trick question just honestly ask yourself.

Try banning yourself from local bookies too. Speak to managers, explain you have a problem and ask them to ban you. Pick up the phone and speak to Gamblers Anonymous

And next time you think of having a bet, remember how you feel now. That big win you crave to claw back losses is possible but most likely you will have further and greater losses

Good luck

Gambling addiction is the same as any other addiction whether it be drugs, alcohol or whatever.

Other people have mention GA, that's a good place to get help immediately from people who have been there and understand how you feel and this is important as addiction is a lonely place.

You could also speak to your GP about an IAPTS (increasing access to psychological therapy) referral. You would get a referral for a set number of sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy and this would help you recognise what leads to your urges to gamble and develop strategies to deal with these urges. There is usually a 6 month wait for this but if you could pay private there will be loads of cbt therapists who have experience of helping people such as yourself.

You've made the first step by admitting you have a problem. Good luck

I can't give you any advice on stopping gambling but having lived with a compulsive gambler and eventually growing tired of his lies, never having any money, his temper tantrums when a horse didn't win, violent rages if he lost on a sure thing and generous bonhomie on the rare occasions he did win I divorced him. It ruins relationships op, please seek help to beat it.

I've refrained from commenting so far but this is a very interesting thread.

I've worked with various types of addiction and have a large number of vices but never gambling.

It's one thing to say 'stop' - it's another thing to do it.

On the plus side it sounds like you recognise you have a problem and want to do something about it.

Hope it works out for you, OP.
