can't diet and I don't usually overeat in anycase (have over xmas though).
Started the beginning of this week with 10 mins step, 20 mins yoga and a bit of belly dancing practise each morning. Dunno if I will have time for all that tho when I get back to work.
Thinking of taking a swim membership, love that. |

i've been enjoying step on my wii fit board. I just wish there were different and longer routines.
I have a gym membership starting rom 1st Jan with a local ladies only gym. One of my colleagues has joined too so we're hoping that we'll encourage each other. |

It doesn't actually take that long to become addicted to exercise. I was pleasantly surprised. I walk to and from work every day which is about 8 miles in total by the time I've walked round the office all day. I swim 5 times a week and try to gym it twice a week. Top tip for the pool... early mornings are way less busy than any other time. My gym has a no kids policy after 6pm which is very cool, the less little people splashing around the better.
I think threads like this are really good for positive encouragement. I generally have the odd off day but I don't beat myself up cause of it, I just try harder the next day.

that's a good point _irtygirl. There's no point heading into a downward spiral after an 'off' day, just get straight back into your exercise routine the day after rather than giving up completely. |

Try the boxing - involves lots of stepping too.
Good luck ladies - my goal for the next six month is 2 stones lost. Assuming I'm currently 16st, which seems about right. |

I've come down from a size 32 to 22. I'll probably be back to 24 by the time I return to work on the 17.
My consultant keeps trying to flog me a gastric band/hysterectomy combo but I know I can do it myself: the quick fix route doesn't appeal.
I'm hoping to be half the woman I am now this time next year! I gave up a 20 a day habit overnight because I wanted to. I didn't want to give up my "treats" and exercise: I do now! |

Hi Ladies/Gents, I need to lose a stone.
Good tips:- finding a good time that suits you to train.
I heard early morning is the best at 6am.
Also as above swimming is great and less impact on your joints. Hope we can all help each other out. I must buy the right foods. Special K is a good start.

I keep seeing advertisements for a local jazzercise class which I think looks really fun. They have an offer on too at the moment - 16 classes for the price of 8 if you pay upfront. I'm very tempted but would like to see if the gym has a step class as I think I'd enjoy that more. |

Managed to lose about 5 stone a few years ago just by eating less, but not starvation and no exercise
Once I got it into my mind I was going to lose weight .. Then self control and discipline kicked in
It's not dieting you are doing but changing the way you eat
There can be no good or bad foods just the right foods for you..
.. Naturally in smaller quantities and less often
Not having a microwave or a freezer certainly helped |

Absolutely... I spent my bonus on a Personal Trainer who is incredibly fit but never once did he make me feel like a lesser being because I was overweight. It's all about attitude.
If you've never been overweight then you have absolutely no idea how it feels and it's only now that I've made the effort and lost some weight that I'm comfortable talking about it. People have looked at me differently pretty much all my life and it's comments such as yours that are perhaps said without thought that would make me feel intimidated by going to the gym.
When I first went to the gym the guy who showed me round couldn't have been more helpful. I didn't feel intimidated by the fit/beautiful people in there because something in my head had switched. I was doing something about my weight and to be quite honest, I didn't actually give a toss what anyone else thought purely because I was doing something about.
So you can sneer at the fat people all you like chuck... but I can guarantee that a little bit of encouragement and changing your attitude towards someone who has struggled hugely to actually get themselves there in the first place will be hugely appreciated by the person you're sneering at. The chances are that they don't come back after a week is more to do with people there making them feel uncomfortable than it is to do with their lack of motivation/willpower etc.
Think about it. |

Exactly what I was going to say. Folk need encouragement, not ridicule. Support them and they might stay!
I have recently managed to go from size 20 to 16, Christmas has got in the way a little, but am back on it now, running every night. I never thought I would feel the way I do now about food! Being slimmer and fitter and healthier feels much better than any food tastes!
You can count me in!
Good Luck everyone! |

Dark hung is right though.
I am not looking to lose much weight but I want to get myself fitter for 'the race for life' which I did do last year, but I want to do it faster this year.
So if any ladies in the area want to walk/jog out with me or would like an encouraging phone call now and again count me in too. xxx |

There are a few key things I learnt from my nutritionist.
1) Keep a diary of exactly what you eat each day. Skinny people overestimate, fat people underestimate. It can be a real eye opener!
2) Eating chocolate cake with veg *does* count!
3) If you start slipping of the wagon you need to realise it straight away and not let it slip.
It's all a mind over matter thing, but food like smoking etc has a very long lead time from pleasure to the pain (consequences). So perhaps a bit of pavlovian conditioning: eat something you shouldn't and get someone to slap you hard. You'll soon start to hate food!
I've had to give up quite a few foods I love, but just think positive and realise the only person you are cheating is yourself! |

"There are a few key things I learnt from my nutritionist.
I've had to give up quite a few foods I love, but just think positive and realise the only person you are cheating is yourself!"
what about carrot cake? |

Hmmm, that's tricky. Although personally I think vegetables in cakes is Satan's work and should be avoided at all costs!
PS: BMI is a good metric unless you are a rugby player. it is
mass (kg) / height(m) * height(m)
Of course just use it to get a ball park figure and see if you need to lose a bit of weight or a whole limb
But there was a whole thread on that ages ago. |

tip for keeping it off? Don't buy in large supermarkets, buy locally just what you need. Do not even consider keeping anything resembling junk food in the house. If u got kids (that includes hubby) tell em to keep their junk in their bedside cupboards. Leave lots of fruit out. |

Baha dum! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
It's a lifestyle thing. Mine has changed unrecognisably since May. I taught myself how to cook. I don't eat ready meals any more which were pretty much how I lived before. I experiment (eat your heart out Nigella) and try new things that I'd never have bothered with before.
Top tip... for one who totally loves sausages (no puns please) and it was the one thing that I found hard to give up... buffalo meat is tasty and less fat than beef so I bought some at the local farmer's market and they rock!!
I also have breakfast now. I never used to, mainly because I just can't eat first thing in the morning. So now I make a smoothie which has a good helping of frozen fruit, yoghurt, water and protein powder my trainer gave me (again no puns!) and that fills me up and gives me all the good things you're supposed to get from breakfast.
I have a whole list of calories/carbs/protein/fat intakes if anyone wants it.
It's not about starving yourself... just eating healthily, watching what's going in and cutting out the crap.
Eat less, move more.
Convert? Me? Oh yes!! |

I have been losing weight since August now I think it is.. gone from a 24/26 to an 18... but planning to reach a size 10/12 by the summer..
I am not dieting, hate the word, it causes to much failure I think.. I am just increasing exercise ( closely monitored by my Master)
and eat sensibly.. I will for a while be swapping tea for friut tea.. and I always eat at least 7 portions of fruit or veg.
I love my wii fit for helping me... and have lost a steady 2lb most weeks..
However, I had a bit of a lapse, hence now I report what I will be doing each day. A bonus to being a slave... I get a personal trainer too.
Good luck to all.. and remember to do it for yourself..as doing it for others is one of the main reasons of failing.

Also the Atkins Diet highlights an important point. Eating protein makes us feel full fast, where as carbs you can keep shoving it in for ages. (It also can take 10 mins for your stomach to tell your brain you've eaten something!)
So look at your diet and assess whether it is balanced or not.
Anyhow off to the gym to see if there is any hot totty... erm I mean to work out! |

Re using water bottles....
Bottles that are pre-filled with water are not meant to be reused and their plastic will break down even more rapidly than will sports or camping bottles that are made as reusable containers.
If water tastes plasticy...throw it away |

Its attitudes like that which stopped me going to the gym..and I was going a lot..
Made to feel that there was little point, like gyms are for those already in shape, so swapped to wii fit at home.

Ther is also no doubt you are going to feel hungry in thenext month
Unfortunately there is no way around it.. I found after the first five or six weeks it was easy..
But that first month it was horrible..
I treated myself to a milky drink last thing at night as my treat
But then when I am set on something I am a stubborn sod
Also.. Skip any milk based coffee drink during the day.. The skinny lattes on a 1500 cal diet can be 15% of your intake.. And one of those caramel lattes with whipped cream can be 50% ..
Most of my weight loss was based on a 1500 cal diet .. Based maybe falsely.. But it worked for me.. That a sedan try office worker uses 1600 cals to breathe, eat and walk a bit.. Anything less than that.. The weight will fall off
Initially it took me 8 months to lose just over 4 stone.. Or a quarter of my body weight..
Have another stone .. Gently over the next 3 years |

Oooooooooooooh really good point Kitten...
I find the more exercise I do, the more energy I have. When I'm being a slacker (like today) and sitting round on the sofa, I really can't be bothered doing much of anything. However, the days I've got my arse in gear and gone to the gym, or for a swim, I come home and the chores I have to do here are not such a chore. I find myself having a bit of a buzz out of it.
Exercise raises your endorphines and there's nothing much (okay I know I'm wrong already) that beats that feeling when you come out the gym after a workout.
Doing more gives you more energy. Not sure how that works but it does for me. |

My biggest problem is that on wednesday and fridays i do both jobs which means getting home at 6pm, 45 mins in which i normally do a bit of housework, if i eat its a plate of chips as i have to leave at 6.45pm to get to the next job where i shall be until midnight |

culinary skills are not required, I manage fine on take it out of freezer, unwrap put in oven and leave for 30 mins! :D
I eat mostly fish and chicken with some sort of carb thingy.
Eating smaller amounts more frequently can help. It amazes me when people pile their plate up at the end of a day because they are hungry. I just can't eat that much in one sitting! (well maybe pussy but that is another story ) |

That's not your biggest problem. Your biggest problem is not being organised. It was always mine and for a relatively organised person that was an issue for me.
Plan your meals. Plan your food. Plan your shop. It sounds a pain in the ass, it's really not. It's a whole change of lifestyle but it is relatively easy to do if you really want it. I've never stuck to a diet in my life but I have dogged determination when I put my mind to something.
You just need to have a meal prepared for your 45 minute time slot. I spend some time at the weekend making things. I eat a lot of chicken so I bake a few chicken breasts and try different spices on them to have in salads. I'm lucky that I like salads... veggies I have more trouble with and carbs are my biggest downfall. Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread... trying to have carbs at lunchtime rather than in the evening was a huge trauma for me. I hate that part but I do it cause I'm determined.
I'm guessing (perhaps wrongly) that you work in a pub or something in the evening? Get yourself a pedometer and check how many steps your doing. Walking up and down a bar all night will clock up the miles and you'll actually be amazed how far you walk without realising.
Keep a note of what you eat and how much you move and start comparing. It doesn't have to be a hassle... you can make it enjoyable.
I could bore you forever with this stuff... mainly cause I'm actually quite proud of myself that I have actually managed to do it. I didn't think that was possible. |

i know i walk miles in the pub, in fact its whats helped me lose weight, waitressing is probably the most walked if you see what i mean, so yes i work a full time day job and shifts in a pub. Its the cooking bit i struggle with, have never learnt properly, mother wouldnt let us, we ate when she decided she was hungry. Will have a read again later of what you have said as im off for a shift, thanks, hugs |

Think yourself lucky, I know of someone in Germany who nicked an inflatable alligator from the local brothel. When they refused to take it back, the Badge made him take it everywhere with him for a week including parade.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
I'd like to combine the elements from various posts that worked for me about 4 years ago when I went from 17st to just under 12 in a year and a bit.
1. It's all in the mind. You're not dieting, you're eating better. Let the weight loss sneak up on you!
2. Drink water. Not this "2 litres a day" bollocks, just replace all other drinks with water. Also try to think a complete glass of water before every meal - it fills the stomach so you feel full earlier.
3. Train your stomach. Clearing your plate is all well and good as a growing child, but you don't want to be a growing adult! Get in the habit of leaving the last 1 or 2 mouthfuls of food at every meal - this breaks (hopefully) the psychological reaction to seeing food and eating it - which will hopefully help with avoiding the biscuit tin at work too.
4. Listen to your stomach. If you're feeling full, STOP EATING. If you feel hungry between meals, have a glass of water.
5. Portion control. Just because you bought it, you don't have to eat it. If it won't freeze, throw it away. When shopping, judge it on whether the price is right for the proportion you'll eat. Then, throwing the rest away is a decision you've already accepted.
6. Don't buy treats. Put the equivalent cash under the bed to buy yourself something fantastic as a proper treat.
7. If your tastebuds start to cry at lack of variety, consider tic tacs for flavour - that's not a packet a day!
8. Don't torture yourself. Everyone has something that's bad for them that they really miss. For me it was cheese. So, instead of not buying cheese, I switched to low fat versions, and experimented to find tasty versions.
9. Saying no. It's the psychological thing again, but when someone offers you something, being able to turn it down gives you power over your food intake.
10. It's all in the mind. If you believe in yourself, trust yourself, and are honest with yourself, you can do anything....even eat differently.
11. OK, a bit of exercise helps too. Try and run up the stairs at work every morning. Get off the bus one stop early when it's not raining. Wash the car every weekend by hand. Put a 6 pack of water in your shopping trolley, then hand it back at the checkout.

Another tip that goes with meal planning is....
Shop online.
make a list of the things you NEED...not want and stick to it when ordering.
No aisles of goodies to tempt you either.
I meal plan now and then make my shopping list around this. i dont buy in goodies but then i dont have a sweet tooth so chocies dont bother me , or cakes etc.
Cheese is my downfall so now i actually buy the strongest cheddar and use it sparingly.

.
I disagree. There may be more fat on the meat, however, cheaper cuts often require slow and longer cooking time, and the fat helps to add flavours that may be destroyed during the cooking process. |

I have put on weight during the past few days, due to eating and drinking more, and exercising less due to lack of walks in the evening with the pooch as I did not fancy slipping on icy ground!
Jeans are tighter for certain.
Therefore, I would like to loose what I have put on, and then to either maintain my weight, or to loose some more.
I could do with loosing a stone, however, I would be happy if I could loose have a stone. |

More if you do it for twice as long and twice as vigorous |

Eww go ahead.
I was there at the birth of this product and can tell you that the fat they take out is then put back by some god awful crude oil based substitute.
Wont come off ya hands either and had to use the stuff mechanics used to get it off.

My morning cup of coffee has 4 spoonsful of sugar in it, and a third of it is double cream.
However, I only drink one cup a day!
And a can of normal Coke during weekday at lunch.
I believe in everything in moderation.
As Delia once said in the line of: if you like chicken skin, have the chicken skin, just don't over do it etc...!

Eat dark chocolate, low in sugar and fat compared with milk chocolate!
I don't like milk chocolate, way too sweet for me.
Yet I like white chocolate, which is not strictly chocolate!
Lidl's has white chocolate bars with crispy strawberry bits in it, very yum! |

Feeling snacky? Keep a tub o natural yoghurt in the fridge. Mix it 2 parts to one of skim milk and drink it up. Lovely, and gets rid of the munchies nicely. Also good for the stomach and helps fat burning. |

Like most I plan to exercise more this year but to be honest it has to be a whole life change that you have to look at there is no point in dieting and exercising for six mths and going back to old habbits - the weight will creep back on you have to try to have a whole new outlook on life a diet is for life not just after xmas... lol
Good luck to all!!! |

As a new year goodwill gesture I am willing to help one lady lose weight. I do something called emotional freedom technique. With EFT weight loss is a doddle. It does not matter where in the UK you are. I will be helping you over the internet. Anybody who is interested please pm me
My offer is serious. We don't have to meet up and all weight loss sessions would be done over the internet. With EFT there are no crazy diets, no cravings etc. I guarantee with EFT weight loss is easy and as we would be doing it over the internet it does not matter where in the UK you are. |

This is my last day of holiday so I'm not starting again till tomorrow, although I have been to the pool every second day right over Christmas so I'm not beating myself up too badly.
Tomorrow I shall make my smoothie before I walk to and from work and then go to the gym in the evening.

i Really think i need to lose weight over the next few months... just over 14 stone at the mo. and would really like to get down to about 11.. not sure if that will ever happen.. but will try.
i'm not really a big eater.. but i eat all the wrong foods. and at the wrong times... which i think is my bigest down fall.
i get hungry about 10pm and i know you shouldnt eat after about 8ish. as your allowing your body to go to sleep on an full stomach.
if there is anyone in the midlands area that fancies a fitness parner.. to go for runs and join at the gym just let me know. |

I hate tea also but this isnt like the normal stuff., I also put a spoonful of manuka honey in it.
Its not cheap at £40 ...
But if it works , which it seems to be. Its well worth it.

Turn left at the Singing Ringing Tree |
Well I lost 21.5 stone overnight when his nibs left! lol.
I managed to lose 3 stone in weight all on my own, just cut down my food portions, upped my veg, drank water when I felt peckish, and did a lot of sexercise.
Some tips I learned - only weigh yourself once a week, at roughly the same time - say Sunday morning - if the weight varies by a pound or two, don't panic, it's a normal body fluctuation. Measure your body, i.e. arms, thighs, waist etc - you may not lose weight one week, but find that you have lost inches in some areas.
I found it useful to use a BMI calculator - you enter your height, weight in pounds, and it tells you what your BMI score is. Even losing just one pound alters the BMI score. I started out as being obese and am now normal weight. I've kept it off for nearly two years now.

Cool thread and congratulations for so many people still with it after 3 weeks.
I have put on just under half a stone since before Christmas - mainly through an injury and snow stopping me from running. Oh and too much wine of course. Your thread has given me the nudge to go out for my first run of the year so thank you (I think).
Love the idea of using what you would have spent on a take out on something health centered.
Good luck to all and hope this thread runs and runs and everyone gets where they want for Spring/Summer. |

I have been given a diet plan and mine has lost me 42 lbs in about 8 months. It's a combination of eating right (but not cal counting) and exercise;
Diet: morning - 1 bowl of porridge (or something similar) for energy. Porridge has a lot of sugar and you need a bit of sugar on a morning for energy, don't worry you'll break this sown during the day anyway.
Afternoon - 1 deliwrap or 4 slices or wholemeal bread with something in-between.
Evening - A balanced meal. Mine is veg, coleslaw, juice drink and a piece of fish.
My exercise is: 20 mins exercise bike, 20 mins cross-trainer, 20 mins stepper, push ups, sit ups and a run of 1.5 miles within 12 mins 20 secs.
As a note if you want to check your bmi for free if your local asda has a chemist then you can ask to get it checked and theyll weigh you for free and give you a bmi reading (it's very accurate), I personally do it every week just to keep track (I have my reasons). I hope my diet/exercise plancan help people as it has helped me was 15.7 st now 12.4 (before Xmas - breaking back down from 12.8 st ATM lol) |

I hope my diet/exercise plancan help people as it has helped me was 15.7 st now 12.4 (before Xmas - breaking back down from 12.8 st ATM lol) "
Well done stan
Mind you, the exercise bit scares the begeebys out of me. lmao |

Only a 1lb lost this week was a little disappointed. But then I thought to myself at least it wasn't a gain. And I didn't do as much exercise last week. |

How have you found it Jack?
Has it been difficult this time of year?, because I always feel hungrier in the winter myself. |

To be honest, it hasn't been too bad, I have felt hungry though, even though they said I wouldn't. I will be very dissappointed if I haven't lost anything. I haven't cheated at all, in fact we've both been extra good. |

Guys...what you need to do its write down what you eat! throw in fruit and cut the crap out! see how you get on for a week!
tracking what you eat will really help... when you feel hungry... drink water? chew gum or have a soup... something that make you feel fuller for longer... you must do a work out! that will get you sweating and out of breath! and I dont me sex! Power walk? or jogging. |

Heres a tip, weigh yourself every week but work it out by the month. Last week for know reason i gained a 1lb but lost 3 1/2 this week which makes a total of 10lb for the four weigh ins in January. Ive upped my step exercise up to 45 minutes this week. Total loss 2stone 12lbs |

you are right, the fruit really works. always have fruit for when you are snacky after a while it becomes a habit. I find bananas particularly good for the munchies and also a glass of natural yoghurt 2/3 to 1/3 skim milk if you feel ravenous, cos that's when you are most susceptible. |

Agree with most of this. Except the chewing gum.
Chewing gum sends messages to the brain that your stomach is expecting food. Your stomach then starts to produce acid in anticipation of that food. When it doesn't get that food all you end up with is a stomach ache and still feeling hungry. |

If you cave in move on tomorrow. I have a handy hint for pastry craving. It takes a helluva lot of willpower to bake a corned beef and onion plate pie and not eat the other seven pieces so if you want a lower cal fix buy a pack of frozen jus rol vol-au-vent cases. Each one has only 69 cals you can take them out of the pack individually, bake them in a few mins and fill them with healthy low cal stuff.. prawns, mushrooms, salmon etc etc. Just that little taster will take the craving away. They make a change from a sandwich or bread with soup. Three with a god healthy filling and salad is a pretty guilt free lunch. Also you can fill them with blueberries or apple sauce etc for a sweet treat. Much better than caving in to a couple of bags of crisps or a chocolate bar... |

As for cravings I love my chocolate instead of haing a whole big bar of galaxy a night lol I keep it in the freezer and suck on a little square instead. Dont restrict yourselves a little in moderation is good. Portion control Ooh and I got an eat well plate they are fantastic. Sectioned off for carbs, protein and veg. |

Just thought about this post today, so good to see that everyone is doing so well!
I have managed to get to 30lbs myself, now down from size 20 to size 14!
One question, what is everyone doing with their profile, are you adding a note on about losing weight, have you changed your photos?
Could it cause problems with meets? ie is it as bad to have old pics on that show you larger as it would be to have old pics that show you smaller?
Think I might actually ask the question in a new post?
|

I think that is what I might do, my shape has not changed just got smaller, still curvy.
Wanting to lose another 20lbs or so, but going for more of a size want to be a comfortable 12!

I've kind of gone off of the rails a bit with my weight loss.
But have come up with an idea to commit me to it.
Have decided to sign up for the Marie Curie Swimathon taking place in 7 weeks time!
Am not sure if I will sign up for the 1.5 km or the 2.5 km yet. Will sleep on it and decide in the morning.
Means I have something else to aim for not just weight loss. |
