I Went over to bird watching from fishing way back in 86, but during the last couple of years when fishing the river Trent I caught some very small barbel useing a allsley bomb and a swimfeeder, from right out the middle of the river, strong flowing river, only ever caught Small stuff along with chub, and on float near mid stream , roach, dace, perhaps the odd Bream, I brought a 10oz perch up useing a fibre glass shakespeare pole, Hardly had a chance to fight but he did do before I cleared the water with him he got his head down like a mad bull full of strenght your not lifting me up just like that, put some bend on my pole that was for sure, local lake fishing I,ve had mostly small stuff, silver bream Included, 2lb tench, and a 5lb tench once, in the lakes I fished a pool stocked with crucian carp, I got one of around a 1lb my dad got one around 3lb like all carp they would go off like steam trains when hooked, have sea fished too over the years.

I'm no barbel fisherman but have been told by many that the best place to fish for them is close to a weir as possible. The rest I'm sure you know . Good luck chap .

"Just me who fishes then"

I used to fish as a youth, but then I discovered watching paint dry and fishing lost all of its excitement for me.
