Having a great weekend then last night driving on way home noise from underneath bonnet like i had driven over a lump of granite which was sticking up further than thought.
Instant loss if power i thought maybe cambelt but that was changed about 30,000 miles ago.
Anyone give me idea about what may have happened?
Waiting for it to be collected |

What car, what engine?
If it's still running (even badly) the cambelt wouldn't have failed although it could have slipped a couple of teeth and thrown the timing out and now valves are meeting pistons. |

Der sorry
2001 Focus 1.8 TDDI
Just heard a loud bang/dull thud sound.
Thank you for taking an interest.
Another thing is it was the same kind of noise as had happened to another car of the same spec but a 1999 model.
I was told it was the fuel pump - which i thought odd at the time i scrapped that car as was told beyond economic to repair. |

Could be the high pressure fuel pump breaking up, yes.
You have two, one to pump fuel from the tank to the rail and one to pump from the rail to the injectors. Since the introduction of low sulphur fuels lubrication of the high pressure pump has been an issue on some cars.
It's possible to repair it but you will also need to change the cam-belt again too.
Does the dash have any warning lights on? Usually you'll have a code for low fuel pressure at the rail if the fuel pump is failing. |

Also worth checking around the top of each injector. If they're covered in a tar like substance you could have had an injector seal fail, it's quite common on diesels and usually a simple fix provided the injector hasn't seized in the head. Last time I did one it cost me about 12p and I did all 4 injectors. Obviously a garage would charge more. |

look straight at your turbo on them
vaxhalls turbos is a renowned fault on them if they go or lose a seal its loss of power and high revs to get anywhere on even a slight gradient
if it is your turbo dont drive them as they destroy your engine |

"May of damaged the turbo intercooler or the pipes to/from it. That would put it into limp mode."
Not always unless the pipe has been completely severed. I had a hole in mine a while back and it just smoked (badly) and lacked power when it was supposed to be boosting, as long as the boost sensor sees some pressure enter the inlet manifold the limp mode won't kick in. |

"Thanks for all this information.
One question as i am no mechanic and would need the help of a motor mechanical expert to get it repaired would it be viable to get it done on a car of that age?"
Depends on what the actual fault is. Anything over £500 and I'd be considering either scrapping or stripping and selling the parts off it. |

Car isn't running a few extra things i have remembered.
It went bang as i was changing gears 1st to 2nd and no idea if this helps but afterwards the accelerator peddle seemed limp
getting it towed to my man who fixes cars for the start if the diagnosis.
if you can shed anymore ideas as to possible problem i would be very interested to know |

at the point of a bang does the engine sound metal'y like the timings out on it
with accelerator do you have a good movement on the peddle does it return up to other level peddles
you press accelerator peddle to floor and engine stays well below so many revs? |

Could be anything given that description.
If there was a bang I'd be guessing at something terminal like a snapped timing belt (or failed tensioner/pulley) or a spun shell bearing on the crank.
Weird that the accelerator pedal is limp if it's either of those though, usually that's a sign of a snapped cable (unless yours has a fly by wire throttle, but it may be a bit early for that) or a failure somewhere on the throttle body (which would be a fairly simple and cheap repair).
Hope you get to the bottom of it and let me/us know the outcome. |

If its a tddi the pumps can be repaired on these last one i did cost around £200 all in to do |

"It was the fuel injection pump car is now a Scrap vehicle estimated cost was over 800
Now to think what to buy as have had 2 failures the same on focus "
High pressure pump (as I said further up). Common issue on older diesels since they stopped using sulphur as a lubricant in the fuel. Some people add a little two-stroke oil to the fuel tank to try to combat the problem but it can cause other issues.
It's possible to get a used one or recondition the old one for a fraction of what you've been quoted though. |
