My eight year old mascara had finally dried up. It's served me well over the years but that's it, time to be dumped, unceremoniously in the bin.

So, recommendations for a new one please. It has to be waterproof, black and to be cheaper than my rent, I'm not paying stupid money for a label.

Around a fiver should do it.

I'm not expert but doesn't mascara have a shelf life so to speak.

Apparently bacteria build up is quite a problem, I'm sure I've heard keeping it longer than 6 months isn't a great idea.

Maybelline false lash effect mascara, cheaper on fleabay. Working on the presumption you want quite defined lashes.

I don't wear a lot of make-up, mostly just lippy but I did buy a mascara a while ago and it's great. It was about 16 quid but I can't remember the make and I can't be arsed getting up to look. I want to say urban something... their packaging is pink.

It might be slightly over, but Boots 17 Blow Out is quite good. I like quite full on volume song mascara but it's not too over the top unless you apply loads of coats.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

wow, 8 years old I never keep eye make up beyond 3 or 4 months of use.

I like MAC and maybelline also do some good ones.

However, for about the last 6 months, I haven't used any mascara as I have been getting semi-permanent extensions, and they are amazing!

This is correct. Make up has a shelf life too. It should say on it somewhere. Make up brushes are terrible for harbouring bacteria too. I always wash mine. X

I know that the manufacturers want customers buying their expensive products as often as possible by offering the bacteria theory from the days when we had to add water to block mascara and used spit instead. I choose to ignore it completely and trust other forms of information.

If I bought one every 3-4 months, I'd be throwing away large amounts of money.

So, back to recommendations please.

I'm the same. I use it from one blue moon to the next. Their packaging isn't pink any more so I dare say it's pretty old. If it's not broke, don't fix it I say.

The problem I find with Avon mascara's, is they are very 'wet'. I use eye lash curlers. If I use particularly wet mascara's, my curl collapses.

I have to say out of all the mascaras i've tried (some pretty darned expensive ones too) I always go back to Rimmel. Rockin curves is the current one and I think it's great, although I don't know if they do a waterproof version.

Well! I've just done a bit of reading only to find out that the formula for mascara hasn't really changed since the 1950's and the trick is in the various applicators and wipers (the ring inside the tube).

Apparently, the applicators, bristle length and gap can make a huge difference and the manufacturers spend millions on lawyers to make sure these innovations aren't copied.

If you haven't got waterproof use normal mascara and then close your eyes once dried and spray with a fine mist of hairspray and it sets the mascara

Maybe near you it all depends

Most makeup products have a small tub with open lid symbol with a 6M 12M 24M etc is printed on and this is its shelf life once opened.

Rimmel - Clinque - Bare Minerals - Liz Earle and Soap and Glory have good mascaras ( Soap and Glory or any No7 products are on 3 for 2 at the moment )

I've got eye shadows, pencils and blushers that are years old, but I'm more cautious about 'wet' products in terms of shelf life. That said, I use up mascaras and eyeliners very quickly anyway as I wear it all the time, so it's not a problem!

Permed? Really?"

The treatment is called LV and it's pretty good lasts 3-4 months and it's about £60.

I've not tried it as my lashes are so bloody curly.

I use benefit mascara I often get asked if my lashes are real as it really does make them look much longer and I change it every 6 months even if I've not run out.

I've had those semi perminant lashes too which last for up to a month but in honesty I get a better look from benefit.

A friend of mine swears by eyelash curlers, even without mascara. Mascara, I find, tends to go a bit thick and lumpy before it has chance to run out. Nail varnish is a buggar for that too. The more often it's opened, the more tacky it becomes.
