yes you top up online or by phone and you can even get an App for it, Smart meters are being fitted all over the country, you just have to wait till they get round to doing your area.

Haha. I just how is genuinely easier to work out a tariff. I mean seriously if asked what tariff I want, surely the answer would be the fucking cheapest one

They wanted everyone to have smart meters by 2017....they have been having issues with them with people getting billed incorrectly and not configured properly...they are now, rather ambitiously, hoping for everyone to be rolled out by 2020....the system is flawed....beware!!

Also there's been quite a few technical demonstrations showing they can be hacked fairly easily

I believe you can get a little device to top up online without having a smart meter. It's something I looked into at my old house but moved before sorting it out

Might depend on your energy provider

Well they're not doing me. I don't want them remotely reading my Meter. I don't trust the fuckers! I either read the metres myself or they get read by their rep with me witnessing it.

And the water company can fuck off as well!

It's so if you are late paying your bill then can cut you off remotely .

At the moment you can get away wothout paying bill for ages almost 2 months maybe more

Now your 7 days late and electri c or gas is off

Anything that is electronic can be 'fiddled'....they will adjust your tariff, units used etc anytime they want to...and they won't even need to be in your home. They will be another 'big brother' dictating to you. Be aware, be very, very aware!!!

Smart meters don't appear to offer anything other than allowing the provider to monitor your usage.

It's common sense to turn things off when you are not using them and using a kettle makes the counter turn faster.

Hackable; yes, and your pattern of energy use will demonstrate when you are away or growing illegal things in the attic.

I'm anticipating that government, Councils and the Police will be actively working with providers as the data will become a "vital tool" for public safety.

Be prepared for a statement along the lines of 'It is absolutely vital that our police and security services are able to obtain energy usage data in certain, limited circumstances, to protect the public and ensure national security. This information helps to disrupt terrorist plots, smash criminal networks and keep us safe, and it is a government priority to ensure our legislation is updated to deal with changing threats and evolving technologies'.
