We've just given birth to our 2nd child (both concieved on contraception) and are thinking it maybe time to look into a more permanent solution as we'd like to stop at 2.
For anyone who's had it:
- Did you have any difficulty getting the op or did your age cause any difficulties with doctors/consultants trying to convince you you may change your mind?
- How long roughly did it take you to recover?
- Has anyone had to have it done twice? |

I've just had the female version and yes I had to do a lot of convincing because of my age. Good luck |

My hubby had a vasectomy AND I've been sterilised so I understand your need to be certain about no more children. We had to fight pretty hard for me but then I do have some medical conditions which I pushed as a reason I couldn't handle another pregnancy. Not so difficult for my hubby. Good luck xxx |

No difficulties at all. Back in the day, GP's were paid extra for offering contraceptive advice, including vasectomy.
Mine was done on a Friday night and I felt 100% by Monday morning. |

I was done 5 years ago. No real complaints apart from the bruising which lasted a few days...
To be honest it was like the last banana on tescos shelf on a Sunday afternoon...not that appealing.
Safer for the guy to do, and obviously it can be reversed if you ever change your mind..

Got mine done at 36, just buy a few jockstraps! No problems just bruising, and I wince at the sound of my toenails being clipped. Otherwise fine!
Oh, I have noticed I cum loads since. Anyone else notice this?? |

I was snipped at 29.
I was asked what I'd do if my next relationship depended on my being able to have children to which I said I'd end it.
I have two kids by different mothers.
It didn't hurt and afterwards I rested for a few days as instructed.
It was a little tender but nothing too bad.
Had to provide two samples later on to prove it was clear of swimmers. (You have to clear the pipes out ) |

I had to go to reception of the sick bay aboard HMS invincible. The wren ma tried to make me blush when I asked for a sample pot. Asking what sort of sample and grinning. Iol. She knew already why.
I simply asked if it affected the result if it had someone else's saliva in it |

Marc got it done a few years ago (I think he was 26 at the time). It all went very smoothly. In and out in under 40 minutes. No complications. Just couldn't exercise for a week after.
They gave him two sperm tests to take at home to make sure the procedure was successful, and it was
It was impossible to convince a doctor to let me get sterilized. Even long-term contraception was impossible to get. Hence the snip for Marc. But that was in the US so I don't know how it differs from here.
Congrats on your baby!!

Both my ex-husband and my current partner had it done, simple procedure and no complications in both cases - in fact, my ex recommended it afterwards to friends of his. |

Thank you, guys.
Yeah, had a look at the different options available to me and Amy and it's a no-brainer - mine is a Hell of a lot safer and as Amy is only 26, I imagine it would be almost impossible to convince them to do anything to her anyway (plus, mine is reversible).
So I'm assuming from a little reading up and the comments on here, it's potentially a very quick proceedure then.
Not worried about the pain. Just trying to grasp a feel for the whole process. |

Just so you know, it is not always reversible. And even when it is, sperm counts don't always return to normal. I wouldn't do it unless I was 100% certain I was done having children. |

I would think that if you are going with the view that "it's reversible anyway", then you are not ready to have one |

"The worst bit was the anaesthetic injections in the scrotum. That felt like a sting. "
To be quite honest, it's a very small bit of pain for us men to take compared to the pain our partners have bearing our children. It's the least we can do. Sex is so much better without the fear of pregnancy.

The surgery here in Plymouth play " The first cut is the deepest " by Cat Stevens. Which I think is funny and probably helps to break the ice...
When my husband had it done he actually came back and said he hadn't, he'd got the time wrong and missed his slot. It wasn't until the morning after that he told me the truth because he was a little tender and I wanted a quickie hehe so it's not that bad at all! Good luck OP and congrats on the lil one |

Had mine done this year.
Had a phone consultation to make sure I was certain about it.
Appointment was booked for 6weeks later.
I opted for no needles.
All up until this point was fine. However the no needle did not work for me, I kept getting a nerve ending pain as they went past the outside skin.
I think it had dulled the scrotum but not the wiring inside. Tried to carry on as I was not sure what level of pain to expect, having never done it before.
After a few mins I had to ask them to stop. At that point they gave me a local anesthetic and after that everything was plane sailing.
First day no issues, 2nd and 3Rd day pretty sore. Then started to get better after that.
I think the simple advice is don't be afraid to ask for more anesthetic. Follow the after care advice, but most of all what ever advice is given its different for everyone, so if it hurts take some pain killers it's not a race to see who can tough it out the best. |

I had the snip when 30 after second child. No problem persuading the doctor as 2 children is very normal. My ex wife's last pregnancy was very stressful and we both decided that we couldn't face another.
I'm now 54 and the only regret I have now is I reckon I'm not a potent as I once was and wonder if having snip is the cause. There was a time when I could happily shag 3, 4 or 5 times and when I met mrs N we once did it 6 times in 1 day.
When we get younger fertile men round I must admit to a tinge of envy at how much spunk they make and how quickly they recover.
Has the vasectomy led to a loss of libido. The sexual imperative becomes less and less anyway as you get older. I suppose what I'm trying to say is think carefully about it. I have 2 wonderful sons from my marriage but Mrs N and I sometimes wonder what would have been. You never know what lies around the corner. Firing blanks does seem to get harder the older I get.
Hope that helps your deliberations. |

So it's the tried and tested rhythm method for you.
Shame that penicillin was so useful for so many, but back to nature we go.

The weirdest thing for me qas the nurse saying 'strip off, lie down and cover yourself with this piece of blue roll ' then the doc turned up, she whipped it off and spent the next 45 mins staring at my gentleman's parts. Why make me cover up for 30 seconds?
She did comment on how well I had shaved prior to turning up though |

Went to docs, asked, arranged, done in a few weeks.
Up and about in an hour. Had a test wank a day or two later (against advice, but, had to check!). Stitches healed a few days after that. Zero long term effects.
And once worked for me! |

It's quite a challenge to get scheduled for this. In women it's pretty much irreversible and even trying is a very expensive op so the NHS are very reluctant to do this to women under 40.
I tried at 37 but got told that I wouldn't even be considered until I was 40 because I don't have any children. The fact that I never wanted children was why I wanted it made no odds.

Our society seems to be obsessed with the idea that a relationship isn't truly happy unless there are biological children. This causes a lot of heartache as many don't find it easy to have them, or fall pregnant at a poor time, or don't really want them but feel oppressed by the idea that they're somehow 'wrong'. |

Had mine done at age maybe 28...normal procedural questions , had it done under private cover through work.
Walked out (slowly) a couple of hours later, a couple of complications , but was fine a few days later

I am more than happy with 2 kids.
If me and Amy split up in future and I met someone else who desperately wanted children, I wouldn't pursue the relationship as I have no intention of having any more and that would make us incompatible. Simple as. I am done.
I will not be held to ransom for a relationship and wouldn't allow them to be lead on in the hope that things might change.
Love doesn't REQUIRE the reproduction of children. |

- Did you have any difficulty getting the op or did your age cause any difficulties with doctors/consultants trying to convince you you may change your mind?
- How long roughly did it take you to recover?
- Has anyone had to have it done twice?
I got snipped at 30 with no kids. Regretted it had it reversed now have 4 kids and am snipped again. The recovery from the first snip was two days. But the unsnip and second snip was 2 weeks both times."
Apparently you dont need the unsnip any more. They can extract the sperm direct for artificial insemination. .. |

Had mine done after the birth of my second child. Used the Marie Stopes charity. Walked in, stripped down and the doctor made me sit on an earthing plate, injected the tube in each ball, made small cuts, pulled the tubes through, cut them, cauterised them and tied them off. Took about 15 minutes from start to finish. The anesthetic didn't take particularly well and it hurt like a bastard, but only briefly. Nuts went the color of coal for a week but no real discomfort. |

I've just got the date through for mine, got to wait till March next year. I would have preferred it to be sooner so I haven't got as long to think about it but I'm sure the end result will be worth waiting for. |
