The latest news in the Syria crisis is that the Rt Rev Paul Butler of durham and other 84 bishops was not happy with 20.000 to allow in by 2020, instead they urged UK to allow a surplus of 50.000 immigrants to come in, how much have bishops really a saying in the political world?
In this rate. I can see we might end up like Russia with their refugee crisis. Whats your thoughts?

The church.
One of the richest institutions in the country, yet they pay no tax (in fact, they actually take additional money from the tax-payer through gift aid.) They own a building in every city, town and village, but during the winter nights, when there are homeless people dying on the streets, every one is locked and empty.
I think the church lost the moral high ground centuries ago, when they lobbied parliament to remove the requirement for them to provide succour for the poor, and spent the money on the bishops instead.
Perhaps instead of moaning from the sidelines, they could lead by example - I'm sure that was Jesus's way

I didn't see the programme, and numbers don't necessarily mean problems, but:
"With an estimated 274,700 asylum claims, the Russian Federation became the largest recipient of new individual applications in 2014, followed by Germany (173,100), and the USA (121,200)"

I think the reputation of church would be better served if they offered funds and resources that could be channelled to help ease the refugee crisis rather belittling government efforts....

Found the page but there's no explanation of the figures - for instance, could they be fleeing from Ukraine?
The figure is repeated around the internet, in less trustworthy sources, but there is no explanation of where the people have come from. |

"I can't find it - there's plenty about Russia arming the Syrians, and Russian bloggers being racist...
When they say 'immigrants' - does this mean in terms of ex-pats or asylum seekers?"
http://www.unhcr.org.uk/about-us/key-facts-and-figures.html
I think the problem Russia has with Syrian refugees is that if they are fleeing Assad, and Russia is supporting Assad....
Anyway, I thought we were meant to be bashing the bishops.
So to speak

Bingo...
From the Moscow Times (very unbiased!)
"With hundreds of thousands of people having been displaced by fighting in eastern Ukraine, Russia recorded the world's highest number of asylum applications last year, the United Nations said in a report published Thursday." |

...and the Russians created that crisis all by themselves. We're comparing apples and oranges. |

Here's the story on BBC: Syria refugees: Bishops urge David Cameron to do more
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34564894
And the bishops have come out because they raised this matter privately but had not had a "substantive reply".
Bishop Butler said: "As the fighting intensifies, as the sheer scale of human misery becomes greater, the government's response seems increasingly inadequate to meet the scale and severity of the problem.
He added: "There is an urgent and compelling moral duty to act which we as bishops are offering to facilitate alongside others from across civil society." |

I think you'll find they do and more. Many provided help directly to refugees in the camps in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan through CAFOD, Christian Aid and other organisations. |

I'm not sure where you feel that fits with the church portioning our government to increase numbers and assistance our country offers to refugees arriving on our shores .....
I volunteer on overseas aid projects and well versed with the exemplary efforts of Christian Aid .... |

Mr ddc" . All charities take tax relief through gift aid , this is not confined to the church. In any event churches are places of worship , they are not intended to house the homeless . The church may have significant assets. but these are necessary to fund its day to day activities ..How many people use the church for funerals and weddings but fail to contibute to it . ? The money spent on bishops is completely immaterial.. |

None. Have you seen how much they charge for a church wedding nowadays?
And all the additional extras?
The bell-ringing charges are just money for old rope! |

I'm only charged for the visits I make to the swimming pool, the supermarket, the pub,.....They don't make me pay an annual subscription.
The cost, and underuse of churches, is a regular issue with Charity Commision, who seem to be fighting a constant battle with the Church to review wastage |

I'm not sure they are belittling what the government is doing, they're just saying they think it should do more. I personally don't agree with them, I think the government is doing more than enough to try and solve the refugee problem at source. However the bishops clearly don't and are saying so. From previous threads I think quite a few others on here would agree with them.

I agree with you, i think the government has done more than enough. Does the general public really take any notice of anything the church says these days anyway? I also wonder why the church is not offering to house 50,000 British homeless people sleeping rough on the streets here each night? Does the church even have 50,000 homes to give to people? |

The church has assets of around £7 BILLION. Last year they £215 million on Charitable projects, much less than they actually receive from the tax-payer.

Yes, let the church pay for the upkeep of each refugee they want to admit.
They would go silent pretty damn quick. |
