Being part of the EU and it's current open borders policy. It's all well and good being part of the common market but each time a new member is added we get an influx of people and at the end of the day that's what they are "people".
The issue I have with this is their are 5 to 10 males sharing a rented property working 12 hour shift and sending all their earning back home to their native country where their families are claiming child benefit and child tax credits. This is what's choking our nation.
The immigration from war torn countries are a totally different matter and we have a moral right to assist them but we are tarring all immigrants with the same brush.
If we take more refugees in we have to make room for them so we have to send some home. I mean if you have a 3 bedroom house their is only so many people that house can accommodate. The same as the British Isles. I also belive if you don't put anything into the system you shouldn't get anything out. I have worked since I was 16 and am now told I have to work until I'm 70 before I get a state pension yet I know people who have never done a days work in their lives and can milk the system to their hearts content.
It's annoying |

Didn't you already say in your opening post "they laze about on benefits". Some may also support themselves through crime. |

and now it looks like Turkey is using the war in Syria and the refugee crisis as leverage to join the EU. Sooner we leave the better.

They can't really be in both states at the same time - that would violate the exclusion principle. That would make them fermions, wouldn't it? |

I was thinking maybe a quark like model, where we could add in other properties like charm (with states 'present' and 'decidedly lacking'), so was really looking at elementary.... BUT I wouldn't exclude a composite state in some areas given how cold the reception is. |

I'm composing this while d*unk.
I think it's healthy having people on benefits, as long as they raise nice kids..who go on to hate what their parents were happy with. I come from a working class family, but a good few neighbours etc had drugs/drink issues...but really...they were nice people.
So lets say we cut benefits...I mean CUT..
what would we see?
a rise in crime?
starvation?
I might sit back and say well its all good for me, I'm employed(might be getting the sack soon mind),but can anyone HONESTLY say they have a guaranteed job for the next fifty years...within 10 years my thinking is a lot of jobs will be down the pipe...within 20-50years massive automation will cripple much of the manual labour jobs..
its simple facts am afraid...I'm an optimist, i think tech benefits our species...but we have to get out of the everyone should work syndrome really soon(as most jobs are becoming zero hrs contract, part time only etc etc)..as there WONT be jobs for EVERYONE |

Until their claim for asylum is processed, they are not permitted to work and have to survive on food vouchers. I think our jobs are safe. |

Good point. It's only until you observe the immigrants that you know.
So they are either stealing jobs or claiming benefits, maybe on minimum wage so doing both?

Benefits have already been cut so we have an idea of the affects, that welfare bill didn't shrink because there are more jobs available it's because benefits and services have been cut directly to the people using them.
Food banks are more popular now.
Working for no pay is seen as a valid option for the unemployed, seeing as there's an excess of them.
Crime has gone up and the police are writing off some crimes because they understand why they're happening.
Starvation is happening and even doctors are sending patients to foodbanks.
Something other than sanctions needs to be used now because focusing on mass profits and the use of technology are both making human wages and employment obsolete.

"..... and cue big-bang"
The bouncing and loitering model uses a cubic (cue big.. geddit?) expression in a solution of the Friedman equation that implies recollapse of the expanding universe for a time dependent Hubble constant.
I've no idea what that means but I loved the name 'bouncing and loitering model' |

With entanglement, parts of the immigrants may also be connected to you, so whatever is done to them can be replicated within you.
With global warming currently afoot, we're going to see millions of people who will increasingly be affected. Who should let them stay, if displaced from their countries - the major nations/areas that caused the most warming, the areas with greatest reserves to house and feed them etc? More than wars displace people. |

The UK came out of the previous recession long before other EU countries. There was a reason for that and the reason became clear when studies revealed that the incoming EU migrants as a body contributed more than they took out. Compare that to the native population who ad a body take out more than they put in.
Without EU migration the cuts to welfare would have to have been on the scale that Greece has had to cut in order to balance the books.
Dealing with refugees is another matter entirely. |

Studies and inquiries can show whatever people want them to show, one prominent one that springs to mind is the original Hillsborough inquiry, what a piece of fiction that was. I can only speak from personal experience.
I have associates, I wouldn't call them friends, that have never done a days work since leaving school, they get everything paid for them and some start whining if they can't do 2 foreign holidays a year.
I work on rented properties for letting agents and have witnessed with my own eyes the guys working 12 hr shifts and sending all their money home.
When my daughter had the grandkids she was in a ward with 12 other mothers and she was the only English speaking person in their.
I am by no means a racists, I know we live in a multicultural society and it benefits us all. My point is we cannot keep taking people in without moving others out. After all we are an island and room is limited. When is enough enough |

i would agree on the sentiment under 'normal' circumstances however war/ conflict/ ethnic cleansing and the other disgusting things that we as a species inflict upon each other dictate that for some circumstances are far from normal.. |

On a lighter note. If they're not coming for the benefits what are they coming for because where I live the waiting list for a council housing is 4 years. The main shopping street is full of restaurants, pound shops, charity shops and pawn shops. The weather is shut and all the locals do is moan.

An Australian points based immigration system would be a good start. If we could nick their weather too that would be a bonus. |

Meanwhile over in the UK Home Office they're probably really confused since they've been operating a points based immigration system since February 2008.
They even have web page or two where you could find out how many points you'd get.
It's available in all weather conditions. |

The OP may also want to check benefit legislation.
The vast majority of newer immigrants will not qualify for any, unless they are working. Asylum seekers have no benefit rights a all. Even EU citizens who are unemployed only have limited rights... That includes housing rights. |

Plus seeing as Australia is not in the EU an Australian points based system obviously means Britain needs to leave the EU for an Australian style system to work. |

"Meanwhile in the EU everyone knows there is free movement of people and a British points based system isn't worth the paper is written on when it comes to EU migrants.

Oh I see. The UK needs to become an Australian state for this to work? |

But we already have a points based system - based on the Australian system - and have had it since 2008. Why would we need to leave the EU to have it, when we already do? |

Because it doesn't work when you have free movement of people within the EU. The EU's free movement of people rules bypass our domestic points based system. |

Are you saying that the people who enter the country on points based visas might move out of the country, reducing the net number of immigrants? I don't think that would be legal, but it might be the case. |

works both ways. There are millions of British who are immigrants in other countries of the EU. Except they like to call themselves expats. "
One programme that highlights this is a place in the sun, folk sell up and buy "a place in the sun" thus becoming expats. Which reminds me of my visit to transylvania, as we passed through a romanian gypsy village, i caught a glimpse of " a place in the shit weather on benefits", as it is a well known fact that tv companies share or sell programme formats |

the perceived shithole is better than the decades in the past in my opinion. We have so much going good for us, it outweighs the negatives.
people are still looking for a perfect utopia, where they can have their own ideals adhered to...
it simply cannot happen in a capitalist society..and certainly not in a communist one.
people should be thankful, though never afraid to question.
We are a great civilization with many facets..some aspects will improve if we help each other with no expectation of gain.
as pointed out in different threads..a population of a rising 7 billion people with varying ideals cant be doing that badly...but if we start acting now on our futures...it WILL benefit us(all). |

Meanwhile in the real world, poor buggers (accountants, lawyers, dentists, medics, etc) are displaced and willing to risk starvation and death to escape their circumstances. |

"I'm composing this while d*unk.
I think it's healthy having people on benefits, as long as they raise nice kids..who go on to hate what their parents were happy with. I come from a working class family, but a good few neighbours etc had drugs/drink issues...but really...they were nice people.
So lets say we cut benefits...I mean CUT..
what would we see?
a rise in crime?
starvation?
I might sit back and say well its all good for me, I'm employed(might be getting the sack soon mind),but can anyone HONESTLY say they have a guaranteed job for the next fifty years...within 10 years my thinking is a lot of jobs will be down the pipe...within 20-50years massive automation will cripple much of the manual labour jobs..
its simple facts am afraid...I'm an optimist, i think tech benefits our species...but we have to get out of the everyone should work syndrome really soon(as most jobs are becoming zero hrs contract, part time only etc etc)..as there WONT be jobs for EVERYONE"
Nail on the head right there.
