I currently live in Rural South Wales and bloody love it here. Most of the people I have met are great.
One thing that is cheesing me off abit though is that as I am sure many other ladies get, I am asked where I am from. I tell them that I am English and if I had a pound for every time I was told "oh I am sorry to hear that" "well you cant help it" and other such things, I would be rich.
I have never responded back anything negative as I do not see anything wrong with being Welsh or English.
Isnit just me or would it annoy you too?. Xx |

I agree totally. I lived in Scotland for 5 years and never had anyone go on about it in all honesty. X |

I'm a Scot, with an English accent, living in Scotland I get your frustration.
I've had a lot of negativity from people who think I'm English, especially after the referendum. It's why I prefer to say I'm British |

I had a 6 yr relationship with an Aberdonian who was 13 yrs older than me from 1990 -1996. She got me into swinging after having bought a copy of Rendezvous together.
She was totally mental lol |

I'm Welsh and know your area very well. I agree that it can get a bit tedious.
I just want people to come here from anywhere in the world, contribute to life here and have a lovely time. I'm a fan of all parts of the UK.
However, I admit that I do get somewhat miffed when people from other parts of the UK say it's a particular Welsh trait. I lived in England for 10 years and it's a lovely place. I took masses of stick for being Welsh from friends, colleagues etc. I also had to listen to lots of hugely ill-informed comments about Wrlsh being a "dead language".
Most of it was just banter of varying degrees of quality. If I had a penny for every time I was told I was a sheep-shagger..... I'm sure English fans have taken stick off Wales, but by god you dish it out too. I well remember posh public-school types telling me to get "back down your coal mine".
It's mostly just banter people and Englsh/Scots etc are just as prone to it.
If it creeps into something more nasty that's terrible. That works both ways too though. I have a friend who was beaten to a pulp by squaddies for being a Welsh c**t (he was English btw).
Interestingly, the word "Wales" means "stranger/foreigner" in Anglo-Saxon. I do think that many do feel a bit of stranger deep down. That's simply because England is the dominate part of the UK and it's not their fault at all. We're the little guys and little guys (rightly or wrongly) like to stick it to the big guys in sport etc.
As I said, I try to ignore it all these days - I just like nice peoe wherever they are from and hate flag waving. |
