Why do people reply to everyone just to say 'OK' or 'thanks' instead of just sending it to the one person that sent it?

I've had at least 15 today so annoying!

usually covering their ass by email in some way

worse is the Blackberry culture, the ones who see if they can reply as late as possible to impress the boss.

I got an email from a boss once at 10.30pm. My opinion is that I am not paid to work 24 hours a day, so why do others work that late?

sometimes it's a positive of the person is 'flexible working' and working late suits, but a lot is grandstanding

I had a boss like that once, I ignored his messages until I was in work, used to drive him mad as I would sit next to him and answer his emails from the previous night

I don't have a Blackberry so I respond to all of my emails when I am actually AT work. I only knew what time he sent it as they have the time on.

Don't get me started on work emails! Shift swap emails, bloody loads of them, every bloody day

I usually respond to everyone because if I don't then I inevitably get 2-3 e-mails asking whether I have seen the other e-mail that I have already responded to.

And I will answer my e-mail at any time of the day. It is expected of me and, frankly, I'm used to working 24/7 (its the culture in NY).
