I'm intrigued,,,,,

Do Chavs actually call themselves Chavs?

I've never really understood if being called a Chav is an aspirational title or if it's an insult....

I've seen people on here refer to people as CHAVs. It's meant as an insult that now means anyone in a council house on a low income (that would be me).

I'd never use it for that I think chaviness is more about the way people act for me xx

My mum thinks I'm a chav because I have a zero crop (am bald), wear trainers, have tattoos and have a cross SBT

Nothing like a bit of social stereotyping eh ?

It's evolved in different areas. Unintelligent, dresses in track suits and trainers, poor lager drinkers are called Chavs in my area. But also people who wear designer clothes and drive nice cars are called Chavs because they aren't particularly intelligent.

It stands for Council House And Violent. Used in cases by the council to alert other staff members.

is CHAV not an acronym for Council House A Violent? heard that from someone but seems unlikely as the name is often applied to people with money and liberal spending habits??

I used to be described as chav because I wear snapbacks and because of where I'm from I have quite a thick Manchester accent sometimes and that gets called chavvy!

Well materialistic but on benefits only because they don't want to work. Associating with illegal things like drug production etc to make money instead..

No it bloody doesn't - the word was in use before social housing was even thought up and probably derived from the Romany word Chavi, meaning child.

"I thought the word chav originated from the Romani chavvy which is children? "

See also: Charver.

Its generally an insulting term for gypsies which has morphed into one that seems to also incorporate what some people feel is the "underclass"...Now often interchangable with the white working class.

I think chav are part of british culture, the girls with their hair tied to one side of their head, the boys with one hand in the trackie bottoms.

God Save the Queen!

I can't be bothered to read it,I'm too tired but I don't see the link between a child and a present day CHAV.

Trainers

Trackie bottoms

Hoody

That's me above dressed in comfort some could call me a chav. Don't really care because I'm not dressing for their bloody comfort.
