"Google the make of your boiler and the fault (if it's broke) Usually get a solution off the Money saving expert site. Saved me £ "
I did that and at least found out what was wrong, but I couldn't fix it myself. Still, it was good to be able to tell the guy so he could bring the correct tools. |

Well I managed to increase the pressure.
I watched videos of how to increase it but what they showed was not my boiler had so took a chance, turned a screwy/valve thing and the pressure gauge started going up. |

Yes that's your filling loop. Let's mains water flow into the central heating system. To increase the pressure. You either have that or some boilers have a big plastic key. So has this fixed your problem?

"No, radiators are still cold
It's not cold here, I just need them hot to dry some clothes.
They come on for a very short while, then go cold again."
they may need bleeding?
are they warm at the bottom yet cold at the top? |

Or the temp might need turning up on your boiler, not the roomstat but the boiler itself...has the pressure dropped again? |

When they come on is there any noise coming from the pipes?
Are they warm all over, warm at the bottom and cold at the top or warm at the top and cold at the bottom? |

No noise, they get warm from the left side of the radiator first for a minute or two & then go cold again. |

Sounds like the hot water isn't circulating properly.
This could be an air lock, sludge in the system or circulating pump but could also be the PCB or boiler stat.
Might be time to call a heating engineer I'm sorry to say |

Certainly sounds like you need a heating engineer, I'm afraid to say.

We had a fault but it was cheaper to get annual cover, which meant they repaired it, serviced it and then other problems for the rest of the year on monthly payment by direct debit. We got cash back from a cash back site too, like quidco or topcashback. |

"But why does the boiler turn off? It stays on when I have hot water running but doesn't stay on when I have the heating on."
Sounds like the pump has gone... without it the water can't circulate... so boiler burner comes on it heats up standing water which won't take long to tell the boiler it's hot enuf and turns off burner... rads get warm one side then cold due to thermal flow as opposed to pumping around the system...
.
The hot water tap is a separate system and doesn't mix with the central heating water
Do you have combi boiler or tank in an airing cupboard ??

You need a gasafe engineer as most pumps and other areas to check are located within the boiler housing... it's really hard to diagnose over a forum but at least if they say it's the pump you are aware of it being a possible fault |
