Is yours up to date?????
This is a topic very close to my heart & I'm always reminding family & friends to get them done.
I know they aren't very pleasant but a few minutes discomfort saved my life. I was lucky - I was only 19. I dread to think what could've happened if I'd had to wait to turn 25 for my 1st test. |

As much as I detest having them done, I always do. I've had to have colposcopy treatment several times over the last 14 years. I would never take any chances, my children need me and I have lots to live for x |

fantastic advice! And guys, check yourselves out too! Most men would do anything other than go to a doctor if they get any abnormal lumps or aches and pains!
You get one go at this life, don't be too busy or apathetic to look after yourselves! |

Yes. In fact i think i may have a chat with 20 yr old Daughter to check she has had one.
Thanks for posting this as it is surprising how many of us get wrapped up in our busy lives and forget how fast time passes us and we miss our test due by dates.
Another important thing to remenber is checking yr breast for lumps. I did this a few yrs ago and did come across a lump. Thankfully i was ok and was given the choice to leave it or have it removed. I did the latter. These checks regularly are important x

I get an aromatic reminder every three years, I'm also eligable for breast screening now but as the unit only comes here every three years won't have one until I'm 52. Only ever had one bad experience with a smear and coincidentally the only time a man did it, and to be honest it could of put me off for life |

I'm guessing it's not something they offer widely with a walk in service but I'm sure if you made an appointment and asked for a smear at the same time as sti testing I'm sure they would do it. |

Always go when I get the letter reminding me its that time, although at my age its now every 5 years. Never had an abnormal result thank goodness. I just lay back, close my eyes and think of something naughty also get the boobs checked too when the appointment/letter arrives. Got to love those travelling units, blinking cold when your boobies are out!

I've had a few problems, had my last annual smear (10 years running) last year and have begged my doctors to let me continue am every year, but sadly it is every 3 years now.
It was a horrendous time of my life which is why I want to continue with annual tests.
I do my best to bite my tongue in the forums, but this is something I feel strongly about. I am shocked at the few people who have not had a recent smear. That is all I will say on it. |

I have had to have yearly ones since 2012 after some issues were found. Issues with that area run in my family and my mum is currently poorly. I was always too scared to go I missed my first smear at 25 because I chose to ignore it. I didn't have one until I hit 30. Started getting issues and then in 2013 I had to be operated on. People should get checked. I know people my age and younger who have left issues too late like I nearly did. My friends sister died at 23 from breast cancer because she found a lump and ignored it because she thought only old people got cancer ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

"I have had to have yearly ones since 2012 after some issues were found. My friends sister died at 23 from breast cancer because she found a lump and ignored it because she thought only old people got cancer
Sorry to hear that, hope your okay now and sending you a hug x"
Not brilliant might need another op but I'm still here so can't complain |

Smear tests are at my doctors surgery where I have to ring to make an appointment.
STI checks are at the hospital at a walk in clinic.
Please don't try and insinuate that they are connected in any way. |

You can assum what you like but that's not true in my case
If I don't go for regular smear tests that's only effecting my health, not going for regular sti checks could be putting others I play with at risk

I had my first one at age 18 and a year later I was successfully treated for cell changes and put on a six monthly recall for the next five years.
I developed a phobia of smear tests and didn't return for 15 years. At that time my ex husband and I went to see our Gp for a referral to the fertility clinic, my doctor refused to refer us until I had a smear done. When my results came back it felt like my world was coming crashing down, the very thing that I had the phobia about was happening. I was diagnosed with stage 1a2 cancer. It resulted in me having half of my cervix removed. I was then put on six monthly checks for three years and then annual checks for the next seven years. Again the phobia returned and I only had check done.
Fast forward to this year and my husband asked me about smear tests, I had to confess that it had been over six years since I last went. He knows all about my phobia and my past cancer history. We had decided to try for a child but he said only if I have a smear. He said he doesn't want to lose me and I need to be healthy before we contemplate a baby. He worked with my doctor in counselling me through it and we booked a double appointment for my coil removal and smear test. My phobia kicked in as I was sat in the waiting room but they were awesome. It had been expected so they were prepared and I was given a very mild sedative to calm me enough to go through with it, my husband holding my hand all the way through.
My results fortunately came back clear but I was sent for colposcopy as a precaution due to my history, again a mild sedative and my husband holding my hand got me through it.
Now I have been put on a three year recall which is a relief, just have to beat the phobia again when the time comes! |

Not an assumption, just my shite use of words.
My thinking was that if women won't have a smear test because of embarrassment/ worry of a nurse poking about in her bits then she probably wouldn't be going to get swabs for STI's either as it's pretty much the same process. |

I was in the first group of women who were 25 not 20 before they were sent the dreaded letter. It annoyed me, but I understand why they have had to increase the age.
My first time took 3 attempts over a few months.. Any more and I think I would have given up, apparently I have a tilted cervix or something which makes collecting cells difficult |

I suppose if that's why people don't go for smears then they may not get tested either but my reaosn for not having a smear test isnt because of embarrassment, its simply because I have chosen not to take treatment if I do get cancer, so why waste an appointment having a test when that appointment can be used on saving somebody who would take treatment |

thats a very similar reason to mine. I would rather die at 50 from cancer than 80 from Alzheimers |

I always get mine done.. And it's not uncomfortable.
If fact my doctor was impressed that I actually rang up about it last time as I was surprised not to have had a reminder.
Saved then sending it out

My first wife was very conscientious about her smear tests and feeling her breasts for lumps etc. Especially as her Mother had had Breast cancer. Kent & Canterbury hospital seemed to do the business, some people may remember how they had a scandal over the smear tests results there. She died from breast cancer despite a mastectomy and a hysterectomy.
In case some of you are thinking this may be down to us living a sexually free lifestyle in her short period on this earth she had 12 sexual partners, 8 of them before we met.
I hold the medical profession in total suspicion and do not trust them one inch. She died at the age of 51 from the secondaries that came back 5 yrs after she was given the all clear.
Now happily married again but there is no way I would trust the word of a medical professional of this country.

I understand where you are coming from, as I was being monitored with a colposcopy at the hospital and despite the doctor saying she could still see an area of abnormal cells my smear tests results came back as normal in December.
But abnormal just now, but at least they are offering to check me every 6 months, so I feel it is better than nothing x |

Funnily I had my letter to book an appointment this week. There's no mad rush for a week as I'm always on top of mine.
However, I'm hereing more and more lately of smear tests coming back clear when they are not. Young girl who!works for my friend had to have a lot of treatment when it was diagnosed because of symptoms after a clear smear test she's not even 30.
So along with smear tests we should all be knowing what the signs and symptoms are |

"Funnily I had my letter to book an appointment this week. There's no mad rush for a week as I'm always on top of mine.
However, I'm hereing more and more lately of smear tests coming back clear when they are not. Young girl who!works for my friend had to have a lot of treatment when it was diagnosed because of symptoms after a clear smear test she's not even 30.
So along with smear tests we should all be knowing what the signs and symptoms are"
Absolutely and when you feel that something isn't quite right with your body get a second opinion. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Good call OP- and if something doesn't feel right- don't wait until you are called up- keep an eye on things and go and get checked!!! |

"Just booked my first smear test at 28 xx"
I find this quite sad. If I'd had to wait til 28 I'd have been dead
They really are nothing to worry about though & take less than 5 mins xx
Well done for booking an appointment xx |

Yep, mine is up to date too.
I go as soon as I get a reminder letter from my surgery.
I had a period of a few years where I had a test every year because they found abnormal cells but they all came back normal so I've been back on the regular schedule for a while now.
No, they're not enjoyable but they're not awful and they're very important. |

"Is yours up to date?????
This is a topic very close to my heart & I'm always reminding family & friends to get them done.
I know they aren't very pleasant but a few minutes discomfort saved my life. I was lucky - I was only 19. I dread to think what could've happened if I'd had to wait to turn 25 for my 1st test. "
dont be daft ladys . Stay upto date with your smears . Life apparently only happens for us all once . I as a man urge you all to get your smears done and stay upto date |

Always get mine done. I'd like mine done yearly but they don't do it.
Don't have a problem getting it done, I don't get excited about it but don't dread it.
My daughter is 16 and sexually active. She has had her jabs for the virus that can cause cervical cancer but I wish she could get a smear done. The earlier they start the better as far as I'm concerned then it becomes normal |

My next one is due in the summer after which I probably won't be offered another due to my age. |

Why is it that women over 60 don't get screened? |

The nurse did tell me but I can only recall her saying that particular cancer grows more slowly after a certain age. They only do them every 5 years after 50 and then not at all after 64 unless you haven't had one since 50 or had abnormal results. |

My first mammogram was done at 49. The nurse told me they had started doing it so that everyone got one around their 50th birthday so from 47 to almost 51 I suppose. It might be different now of course as that was 10 years ago ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Same here Lil. I'm still on 6 monthly checks for the second time round. Due this month again. |

I had a bad experience of a smear test put me off for a while.
Had one recently and they have changed how it is done rather than the scrap it is a tiny brush. No discomfort. Would recommend going to anyone who is scared. Also my local health authority is running early mammograms....had that done no pain and easy.
All clear on both. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

I will be due my first one this year. As much as I don't want to go, I will be doing. My mum has had problems with all that and stopped going due to fear of what she may find out, the doctors are currently trying to encourage her to have one done but not being too forceful as they don't want to scare her away. With everything my mum's experienced I think the best thing I can do is go and have it done for my own peace of mind and to show my mum it's not all bad.

I keep mine up to date as family members have had cervical cancer/breast cancer so don't see it as a burden but as a life saver. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
Mine was done just before Christmas and within.a week I had a letter saying nothing further was required. They now look for traces of something else which is a marker for potential problems. If you don't have that marker you're good. |

For those still to book please do ASAP. If your GP can't fit you in please go to your Family Planning Clinic xxx |
