"A certain car maker is moving away from petrol and diesel to hybrid cars.
With software so you can nick your neighbours electricity. "
When will people realise that mining and refining the nickel for those cars is actually worse for the environment than a regular petrol/diesel car is in its entire lifetime? |

Most hybrid technology is now lithium based, not nickel. The next generation based around hydrogen fuel cell technology will be ground breaking. |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |

Lithium based hybrid systems have better longevity but the process of mining and refining still has a massive impact on the environment. Plus the battery packs still require replacing every 5yrs or so. Hybrid systems are massively flawed and will never live up to the hype.
Hydrogen will be ground-breaking if it ever takes off. |

If they can get a stable cell it will take off, if they can't then the cars will literally take off!!
And would be interesting to see whether th offset of carbon emissions versus mining impact nets off? |

The BMW system showed great promise, as did the Toyota. Pity they weren't more widely sold (I think they were only sold in California). |

a few car makers are looking at hydrogen hybrids...
Honda have had a car doing this for a while (FCX Clarity) in california..... Toyota are doing this with a car coming in the next few months....
hydrogen cars will mean zero emmissions as all that is coming out the back is water vapor
and they will have regen braking so they are producing there own electricity for short journeys... |

Hydrogen hybrids are still a flawed concept (although a step in the right direction) as the combustion engine still produces pollution.
Full hydrogen systems are the only rel answer, if the oil companies allow it |

see its a difference in world view whether it ends up being the honda/toyota view.... the FCV's.... or the Tesla view.. all electric
should be interesting to see which way it goes... the game changer would be if tesla develop a normal elecric car that can do the range.. their infrusture is more in place than the hydrogen fuel pumps are....
if a govt were so do something really radical (for example in the us buying the tesla at 75k will then get you a third off in incentives.... making it somewhere around 50k) if the uk did something like that rather than just the 5k incentive... i think the sales would shoot up |

The problem would still be the batteries. They will still need changing every so many years at considerable cost. Also they still rely on the power grid for charging, so indirectly cause pollution. |
