Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Some abbreviations just don't make sense, particularly the place name ones.

Why is Hampshire abbreviated to Hants?

Any answers? Any questions?

Hmmm, you are consistent at least.

Conservative is abbreviated to Con or Tory, which translates to robber/thief/brigand.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

On a related note, why don't people accept a place name as defined by the people living there?

Eg the French call London, Londres. We call Koln, Cologne.

Imagine if you were introduced to someone and just chose to ignore their name and call them something else instead...

My name has different pronunciations and a fair few use a different one to the one I use. One of my ex's persisted in this until I explained how unpleasant it was.

"Any answers? Any questions?

"

From Hampshire County Council's website:

""Hampshire" is often abbreviated in written form to "Hants" and which sometimes gives rise to puzzlement. The abbreviated form is derived from the Old English Hantum plus Scir (meaning a district governed from the settlement now known as Southampton) and the Anglo-Saxons called it Hamtunschire"

You're welcome. Lazy.

Thank you so much. Was the last bit supposed to be Hantunschire or does it change to Ham again for some reason known only to the Anglo-Saxons?
