Those that know me will know that I would normally shop at the higher end stores for my groceries. Yesterday however, I had little alternative but to use an ASDA store close to a housebound relative to pick up a few provisions. I wasn't perturbed by the fully manned and extremely busy halal butchers. Nor was I shocked by the polish deli counter.
No what astounded me was the 6p charge for a "bag for life" carrier bag. Not 5pence as the government decrees but a whopping whole penny more for us to have to walk from the checkout to the car park advertising their cheapskate supermarket chain.
Scandalous!
Angry of Tunbridge Wells.

At my local Asda they don't trust us to pay for the bags at the self-service checkout. A woman walks around with a wadge of them over her arm waiting to be beckoned. I whistled to her as she couldn't hear me calling. It's so degrading |

Totally agree .
Tesco charge 5p for the one use throwaway shite. The 6pence bag for life option can be exchanged for a new one every time it rips. Not many people know that!!! |

I go to Lidl for the cheesy rolls, Stollen and frozen lobster. Last week I also managed to get the reflective insulator stuff for the back of the radiator* and a TENS machine. Who'd have thunk it?

Did you get carried away with the bargain buying? The pain au chocolate are to die for, 3 for 90p YES that's right 3 of them for 90p.... They are 90p each in M&S!
Aldi is good! The meat is lovely, fruit and veg is lovely and fresh, the chocolate is that nice foreign stuff... You can't really go wrong! Apart from the fact they don't have an on site bakery! The Brioche buns are nice (4for£1... 2for£1 in M&S!)
I'm getting carried away now... I'll shut up |

Somehow we spent £100 in Lidl buying bargains! If we do the same this week for our visit to Aldi then it's a very good reason for me to stick to Waitrose.

Some bags have improved quality dramatically. Boots 5p bags are almost bag for life quality now, whereas the old ones tore if they so much as looked at the pointy edge of a toothbrush in its cardboard packaging. |

I have a friend who works in the accounts team for a packaging company. She said that orders for the bags for life types had increased and that some retailers had changed their bag specifications knowing this was coming. They also expect to sell more canvas type bags over the next six months.

I accidentally guesstimanted too many bags the other day. I actually asked for a refund (15p is 15p). I was told they don't refund bags if they're not faulty (seriously?!). The lady behind me received them. I think she'd have preferred flowers though. |

Next time make your own bags. Reclaim old hankies, after washing the tears away, needle and cotton - free at many hotels, and you've a unique shopping accessory.
Or get a job in Asda and your staff discount should make the bag better value. |

No the real scandal is we are paying twice for the carrier bags.
Think about it carrier bags were perviously paid by the shoppers as part of the genearl costs the store used to set the price of the goods they sold.
Now we have an additional levy on buying the bags we have already paid for to carry the goods we have purchased. |

So pocket impact is increased, and so is environmental impact. |

'Bag For Life' my arse. I bought one of the very first hessian 'bag for life' when Tesco introduced them, many years ago. Paid a quid and they said if it ever needed replacing, I'd get another free.
When the bag eventually started falling apart, I took it for a replacement and Tesco flatly refused. Buggers made me pay £1.50 for a new one.
Also - Morrison's self-service till can't detect when you re-use a (bog-standard) carrierbag, so you have to say NO, then enter 0 bags, at the end.
