Complaint against a cycle club

Do cycle clubs have a committee or a leader as such ,,,,,, as i wish to vent my feelings to someone who runs a club from a few miles away .

On Sat i was on our local lane ,( 2 cars cant pass without 1 pulling over at a pull over point of which there are many ) anyway as i aproached a blind bend i had all of a sudden 25 odd bikes 4 or 5 abreast going for it , i pulled up but chaos would be a good description as 4 or 5 tried to get into a line where only 1 can pass ,,,,,, i let my feelings be known but was told to feck off ,

now i dont mind leisure cyclists one bit but this club is begining to wind every one up in the area ,,,, this is happening most weekends

I am very much live and let live but very soon someone is going to get killed , already had an ambulance out on the lane twice last year

Used to live 6 floors up overlooking the roundabout at Elephant & Castle and the number of accidents or, more frequently, near-accidents between cyclists and cars, cyclists and busses, cyclists and pedestrians, cyclists and other cyclists...

I understand that no-one thinks the laws of the road apply to *them* personally but cyclists can be cyclopaths.

Yes you can probably Google your local cycling club. They'll have a body I would think, certainly up here they do... I've just googled and there are a couple.

Best bet is to put together a calm email and note your concerns. If you go in all guns blazing they'll bin it. Leisure cyclists are fine if they know how to sit a bike and cycle in a group but if they're total amateurs that's when the problems arise.

Incidentally I'm coming down there on Thursday!

You need to write to the chief constable giving all details, its a safety issue, Police will issue a notice simply asking them to be more cautious and have more consideration for other road users... its not much, you know what police are like, but it does help if things like this are on record if/when there is an inceident.

OP, totally get where your coming from here. I'm a keen cyclist and motorcyclist and car driver, so I see all points of view. Cycling 2, 3, and 4 abreast is not on, not on public roads without permission, it gets my back up too. They arnt doing themselves any favours in the public eye.

I'm a keen cycler and I do cringe when I see three or four people cycling abreast coming up to blind bends junctions etc. Normally chatting away! Has to be give and take on all sides but safety comes first.

Before you get your knickers in a twist... No way that's a cycling club. Cycling clubs would ride two abreast not all over the road. It sounds to me like the new sort of unregistered racing. Because bike racing has become so massively popular so quickly people are just going out and doing it adhoc (kind of like swinging instead of marriage) they just do this sort of gang bang thing with no safety car (condoms) or following first aid (std clinic). If there's a pattern tell the police as it's very dangerous. Don't take the law into your own hands as you might even by the simplest of actions kill one and find yourself doing a few years in prison. The roads are for cyclists and horses pedestrians and cars.

The roads are for racing cyclists. It is set out in law in great depth! If there's no lead car that would not be a race just a bunch of clowns.

Keep a large tub of tacks and drawing pins in your car, the next time the fannies are on the road 2 or 3 abreast, safely drive past them and further up the road, scatter the tacks and drawing pins out your window, hopefully they will spend the next few hours repairing punctures

Feel free to complain but you will be told that they are doing nothing wrong and are well within their rights, which is very true. When I ride in a group we find it is much much safer to ride 2 abreast. I'm a motorist and a cyclist so will not defend cyclists when they are in the wrong but apart from the verbal they aren't doing anything wrong.

Here's hoping your family memebers don't ever ride because that could quite easily equal death. Not a very clever post.

The only way there will be an accident is if the driver is impatient and reckless. Take your time, you may be in a hurry and they may have made you slow down all whilst your thinking, 'I pay my road tax' it's not the cyclist riding double a breast it's more your ignorance that you've had to slow down and disrupt your journey. I get it. Both a cyclist and car driver here.

Dash cams are effective HOWEVER I feel that they can leave you slightly less complacent and your senses aren't as high, they are a distraction. However I do really agree with them though, every car should have them although they can lower your judgement.

Best defence/protection etc against this sort of thing is a dashcam. I got one for less than £20 off the bay of e. it's a bit grainy, but good enough for evidence. Oh, and a couple of window stickers - I got a sort of gatso camera logo with DASHCAM lettering for less than £2 from same place - works wonders on tailgaters etc.

Write to the club if you can identify them, otherwise, forward footage to police.

cyclists round us are a menace - they use lanes for time trials - apparently it's OK to overtake horses at 48mph in a 30 mph limit - 2 abreast? ? obviously didn't learn to count either - how is it OK to race bikes on a public highway with no thought to other road users but you can't race any other vehicle?

In a time trial one isn't racing in the sense of peleton, breakaways, sprints etc. They're set off singly, at minute intervals and it's a race against the clock. One would certainly never ride 2 abreast. If one was to catch one's minute man, then one would tuck in behind for a bit to take advantage of the slipstream, then pass if feeling that one could make further time gains by doing so. In my case, I used to try and hang on to the bloke passing me for as long as I could - I wasn't great at it

Cyclists can be a little bit more pleasant towards motorists.

Another group that meet in great numbers and, put the fear of god in motorists and pedestrians are !!! jogging clubs,

I think that there should be a limit put on the number of people that congregate in great numbers upon the highway and byways.

I don't mind if I came across 50 people or more bouncing up the road or pavement on space hoppers.

Find out the Club name from their cycling clothing, then Google it. Most clubs will have either a Facebook page or webpage you can't vent your annoyance at.

Get a camera film it then send it to the police, they might go and have a word.

Actually there is a whole section of the highway code devoted to cyclist, as in things they must do. I am a cyclist who is getting fucked off with the idiots out there calling themselves cyclists, the ones who go through red lights, ride at night without lights. All I can say is I hope when they get hit, they don't injure some one else at the time.

Actually you will find the cycling clubs are the worst, or they are in Brighton. You see them 3/4 a breast blocking cars from coming past, you to it them to let them know are there only to be given the two finger salute. After that they tend to get grazed knuckles from my wing mirror. Why should I give them courtesy, when they don't.

48mph are you as high as lance Armstrong?"

It is not hard to get that speed, I used to race in my 20's and could get to that speed quite a few times.

There's an old guy on a pedal bike who sets off the illuminated 30 mph sign every time he goes past it lol. Think he sets it as a challenge

"Just pick them up before any cars, dogs or horses come along eh?!

If a dog was in the road, I think a tack would be the least of its worries "

Sorry i assumed it was one of those narrow lanes with no pavement. Around here its quite common for people to walk their dogs in the road.

i'm not sure drawing pins and tacks would bother horses too much either seeing as how you can quite happily hammer a 3 inch nail straight into the bottom of their foot .... not that i would scatter them over the highway i hasten to add"

Except they have a very sensitive part in their hoof which doesn't have nails hammered into it. If a tack was it hit that part the horse would spook potentially throwing the rider and causing serious injury.

"Yes you can probably Google your local cycling club.

Actually you will find the cycling clubs are the worst, or they are in Brighton. You see them 3/4 a breast blocking cars from coming past, you to it them to let them know are there only to be given the two finger salute. After that they tend to get grazed knuckles from my wing mirror. Why should I give them courtesy, when they don't."

Do you know the difference between giving someone a v sign and using your car as a deadly weapon? Prison time.

Totally agree with DirtyGirl way up at the beginning. Be calm, state the facts and raise the safety concern. You'll find the organisers are generally quite sensible and aware that their riders have to SHARE the road.

Google cycling clubs in your area. If you don't get the exact one, they're likely to know who was organising it. IF it was an organised event.

Christ i wouldn't need to drive my van into them.

"cyclists round us are a menace - they use lanes for time trials - apparently it's OK to overtake horses at 48mph in a 30 mph limit - 2 abreast? ? obviously didn't learn to count either - how is it OK to race bikes on a public highway with no thought to other road users but you can't race any other vehicle?

In a time trial one isn't racing in the sense of peleton, breakaways, sprints etc. They're set off singly, at minute intervals and it's a race against the clock. One would certainly never ride 2 abreast. If one was to catch one's minute man, then one would tuck in behind for a bit to take advantage of the slipstream, then pass if feeling that one could make further time gains by doing so. In my case, I used to try and hang on to the bloke passing me for as long as I could - I wasn't great at it

"

isn't there something about requesting permssion from the police at least 28 days before a time trail race?

It wasn't a time trial. By the sounds of it, just a club run.

Id like to see both sides of the story, i don't believe they were 5 abreast, just like i don't believe cyclists ride 2 abreast at 48mph whilst overtaking horses..

No they don't do that either.

Um lets see, how about getting off the high speed multilane road and crossing at the newly installed puffin crossing points instead of putting their lives and other road users in danger.

When you pay road tax and are insured, come back to me and I'll listen.

Most of the road traffic act doesn't apply to bikes, including speed limits.. although you can be arrested for "Pedaling Furiously".

Racing is only legal if organised and approved.

Also, as a cyclist we are still required the cycle with "Due Care and Attention"

"48mph are you as high as lance Armstrong?"

I've achieved speeds of over 60mph on my bike before, 45 is not hard at all on a steep hill.

I understand that no-one thinks the laws of the road apply to *them* personally but cyclists can be cyclopaths. "

I live next to a pelican crossing and every day I see loads of cyclists crossing when the lights are on red and even when people are crossing. Many cyclist have no road sense and are a danger to themself and anyone else, they also have a disgusting attitude to other pedestrians and road users. It's not just the cyclists ability that contributes to road accidents though.

If a dog was in the road, I think a tack would be the least of its worries

i'm not sure drawing pins and tacks would bother horses too much either seeing as how you can quite happily hammer a 3 inch nail straight into the bottom of their foot .... not that i would scatter them over the highway i hasten to add

Except they have a very sensitive part in their hoof which doesn't have nails hammered into it. If a tack was it hit that part the horse would spook potentially throwing the rider and causing serious injury.

What it means is that there is no law to say a cyclist must use a cycle path or crossing... these additions are there to aid cyclists IF they need/want to use them.

They're certainly not..

It goes a bit further than that though. If you're a cyclist, you'll often see at roundabouts and junctions that the cycle path will merge with the pavement and there will be a sign saying "cyclists dismount". So if you are wanting to turn right at a roundabout, the designer of this cycle path wants you to get off your bike and wait to cross the road (as a pedestrian", then walk up the road a bit and wait to cross another road "as a pedestrian" then walk back to the edge of the roundabout and get back onto your bike and join back onto the cycle path. Where-as this will be a nicer way for a slow and un-confident cyclist to cross the road, for those of us who are comfortable in traffic and able to move with the flow of that traffic, it makes much more sense to go around like any other road user... don't you think ?

I read in a recent study into cycle paths (Published on BBC website) that cycle paths actually make the roads more dangerous than the cyclists using the roads like the other traffic.

For the record. I do use the cycle paths 99% of the time, but I do join the flow of traffic at junctions and roundabouts.

Actually, we're not allowed to ride more than two abreast.. that's the law.

Unfortunately, some cyclists don't give enough care and attention to others around them and give the rest of us a bad name.

Cyclists and motorcyclists are the biggest single category of organ donors, because they're usually healthier and fitter and more frequently have fatal accidents.

If you don't agree with someone's opinion you don't ask them to elaborate because you don't agree with them lol you simply think, 'huh it's their opinion' and move on.

Cyclist, motorist, motorcyclist, pedestrian. Just people. With lives, family's, husband's and wives, sons and daughters. Do you want to tell someone that you're in prison because you wanted to prove a point? Or in hospital because you didn't think red lights applied to you? Let's just look after each other shall we?
