Paleo diet

Anybody done it?

I've a lot of weight to lose (4 stones) having lost 3 on lighter life so far but am looking to come off lighter life after Christmas and Paleo seems like a healthy and sustainable way of life rather than a diet.

Interested to hear others views and experiences...

My brother and sister in law do it. They've changed their lifestyle and it's a long term thing for them. It's definitely helped her lose baby weight and he is extremely trim as a result. They don't do "cheats" or anything though, it's a strict diet.

Before I went vegan I did a vegetarian version of Paleo and lost 36lb in 10 weeks.

It's just as unsustainable as any other diet though - you can do it to lose the weight initially, but unless you change your relationship with food it will eventually go back on again.

I have a friend who has told me all about it, plus I've seen a comedian do an excellent piece of material on it

It's largely debunked as without foundation but if it works for someone, good luck!

I can't eat gluten or dairy, and by default moist processed foods are out, so I'm sort of on it without realising.

"It's largely debunked as without foundation but if it works for someone, good luck!"

Author Tim Ferris calls it "slow carb" rather than Paleo - which makes more sense as the Palaeolithic Era lasted a couple of million years and covered the whole globe ... Paleo in one country was entirely different to Paleo in another.

A friend is doing it, not sure on his weight loss but he went from a 48 to a 42 in a few months, a year later is still on it. I want to do it not to lose weight but because I think its healthier, I just want to make sure its suitable for me at my age

As with all diets it is founded mostly on deceit and the lack of understanding that starving your body either makes you unhealthy or fatter in the long run.

You are either not eating enough and thus not healthy enough or you put your body into starvation mode where it hoardes calories and puts on weight easier. The opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

The paleo diet also lords it on the impression of purity being all this natural stuff that we ate thousands of years ago. It neglects to mention that the average life expectancy of a human was around 20 at that time and as our diets changed so did our life expectancy increase four fold.

The ideal fad diet is a good balance of all foods with regular and sustained exercise of whatever type fits your chosen excuse panoply.

That way you get nutrients, pleasure and exercise and you will be 100times better for it.

Glad we've put some balance on the paleo diet.

We ate a much more varied diet back then - our geographic location, seasonal food availability, proximity to the sea and what plants etc grew where we were etc. There's also uncertainty about when and how ancestors prepared food.

If you're happy eating insects, mice, rats etc then the paleo diet could fit you. We did eat cereals and other fad diet banned food earlier than this diet suggests.

The biggest mistake this diet makes is that we've stopped evolving and so can not gain nutritional benefit from the more 'recent' introductions to our diet.

Combining exercise and dietary changes has a greater success rate than either diet or exercise alone, in sustaining the reduced weight level. As we lose weight our basal metabolic rate falls, meaning we need to perpetually consume fewer calories, otherwise we will likely gain weight again. It's a tough one as it would be nice to think of resuming a former lifestyle.

"It neglects to mention that the average life expectancy of a human was around 20 at that time and as our diets changed so did our life expectancy increase four fold."

I don't think that's quite true - I believe that, while it was low, it actually decreased during Neolithic times - and a lot of the statistics include factors such as ice ages, predator attacks, wars and so on. We may not have had so many diseases, but being a human has always been a risky business.

just had a google peep - it just seems to be a sensible diet - to lose weight you have to put in less than you use - simples really - since ive started my new job im losing about 2 to 3 pounds a month just purely because the 2 days i do a 12 hour shift i eat very little (some of the sights at work make my belly flip) and im on the go most of the day - and i eat sensibly the rest of the time - have an occasional treat of chips or take out -

You are muddying the waters of a otherwise perfectly good point.

We used to live a very short time, we now live a very long time. Part of that is due to better nutrition.

Also don't believe all you read on Wikipedia.

I don't do paleo per se. But I do embrace 'clean eating' and its how I dropped my weight. I don't find it difficult and its a part of my lifestyle now

Paleo is about health. It's not about fat loss and tbh its based on debatable science.

Diet is fairly simple. Find the average number of calories you need in a day to maintain. If you eat a bit less (on average) you'll lose weight. If you eat a more (on average) you'll gain weight.

Deciding on types of food is more about what kind of health issues you have or want to avoid.

Having a handle on the amount of calories you put inside you is the basis of every successful diet. The rest is just the gimic to get you to choose a product.

If like most people you don't want to abandon any types of food altogether Google IIFYM it takes a little reading up but the principal is virtually foolproof, if you follow it.

Good luck, whatever you choose to do.

I followed the 'paleo diet' and a strict exercise regime (mainly HIIT) and lost 8 stone in as many months. However, life got in the way, and my exercise regime got lost, and my eating habits changed back, so I've put 4 stone back on... What I'm trying to say is, doesn't matter what you do - you need to be committed for life!
