Good point, it's really important for them in this kind of weather.

Sunflower hearts, niger seed and decent quality peanuts are all good, as are fat balls and suet blocks.

Avoid bread! - if you must put it out either let it go stale or toast it and scrunch it up into crumbs.

Some good kitchen scraps to put out: grated cheese, suet and fat, apples (cut in half) and raisins.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

All of that sort of food out almost all year round in my garden! The RSPB recommends it! I don`t leave fat balls out in the autumn because the rats come in from the surrounding fields after feeding of the rough grain that the combine harvesters leave.

Bird Poles with several hooks are good, they are hard for vermin to climb (including squirrels, which are just rats with a good PR job) and can take 3 or 4 feeders. Some can even have little seed trays for robins and thrushes to use.

Flies - well without them we would be knee deep in animal and bird corpses all the time!

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

I bought one of those big coconut shells filled with fat and seeds. Hung it onto the tree, pushed well down on a thick branch.

Next day it was gone. Vamoosh.

The day after that I found it placed on top of a foot high plant pot at the other end of the garden....

Then the following day it had disappeared altogether...

Do you think I have fairies??

Make sure you leave water out for the birds too, it's every bit as important as food at these temperatures, they aren't getting any. Stop it freezing by putting a candle underneath the dish (screen the sides to stop it blowing out).

It wasn't me, I didn't do it!

Anyway as that little old lady outside St. Paul's often says...

'Come, buy my bags full of crumbs;

Come feed the little birds,

Show them you care

And you'll be glad if you do

Their young ones are hungry

Their nests are so bare

All it takes is tuppence from you

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag

Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag

Feed the birds,'

.

This shit is sick!

Respek! Poppins in da house!

I'm sure everyone is offering all this great advice is doing so with the purest of heart and good intentions when it comes to showering true care and compassion on our feathered friends during this bitterly cold time of year,,,,,,

However,,,, the devil in me is struck by the irony that soon it will be Christmas day where traditionally many people take a bird,, rip its head off,,, pluck it feathers out ,,,remove its gizzard,,, and stuff it arse, before roasting it in a red hot oven then slice it up with big knife before devouring its flesh..... Oh and just to round it all off,,, crack in half its so called wishbone while bestowing sentiments of goodwill to all……… phew…. ….. hmmmm….

Hey it was just a thought,,,,, …..

Have a search for countryside/horsey/farming type places and buy bigger bags! I get 18 kilos of wild bird seed for around £10 and 18 kilos of peanuts for £20. Some of the larger braches of Range have bulk bags too!

On a serious note let's not forget the Wrens guys.

We lost 90% of the Wren population in the big freeze of '63.

So save your fatty deposits up for the lil fellas.

.

As a side note

Don't forget to put a little bit of Beecham's powders in their bird baths to counteract the Bird Flu (Night Nurse for Owls)
