Ah yes!
It was originally developed in 1885 by a soldier, John Pembleton, as an alternative to morphine, which he had become addicted to during the Civil War.
Coca-cola was originally sold as a 'coca wine' (like the Vin Mariani, popular in Europe and endorsed by the Pope).
Carbonated water (a new thing at the time with supposed health benefits) was added and the stuff was initially sold as a patent medicine.
It had cocaine in it until 1903.

Did u kno that Sigmund Freud invented the speedball?
At first, Freud's interest in nose candy interest was purely medical. He wrote papers about the feelings associated with the substance, saying that it provided exhilaration and euphoria just minutes after partaking.
Freud's buddy, Ernest von Fleischl, had a pretty bad morphine habit, so to help him kick it, Freud prescribed cocaine as a "safe" alternative.
Fleischl became addicted, of course, and was soon spending more than $10,000 per month on the drug.
Proving himself to be a good scholar but perhaps not a great friend, Freud recorded his friend's increasingly negative side effects.
In 1891, von Fleischl became the first person in history (that we know of) to die of a speedball when he mixed heroin and cocaine.
But back to Freud. Though he considered himself a casual user, a three-year period in the mid-1880s produced such a huge body of work on the topic that it's easy to assume he was using pretty regularly.

Did u kno that Nitrous Oxide (N02 aka laughing gas) is highly addictive?
Humphry Davy was an important chemist of the 1800s, which explains how he had access to the nitrous.
He once inhaled five pints of the gas, promptly fell to the floor and remained blacked out for nearly three hours. He kept trying it, though - you know, for scientific purposes.
Davy decided nitrous was better than alcohol because there was no hangover.
It's evident from his papers when the addiction truly began - his writing becomes filled with poetic descriptions of the stuff, such as when he suggested that nitrous must be the air in heaven.
Watch out, that stuf'll kill ya. |

There was a really interesting documentary about the Jamaican medal success and linking it to genetics and the slave trade. The traders threw the "trouble makers" off of the boats at the islands rather than take them to the plantations on the US mainland. it was on during the olympics. |

Cocaine used was quite common in Victorian times too. Conan Doyle gave Sherlock Holmes a cocaine habit.
Nitrous Oxide is used by clubbers to provide a short term buzz, light headed feeling. Didn't know it was addictive.
Ketamine found its way onto the rave scene as a very small amount can re-induce the "rush" of ecstasy from a "come down." |

Err no it doesn't that would assume the ideal gas law but there are many causes of deviation from it. Being too lazy to try and produce my own explication I nicked the following from that dodgy Wikipedia source.
'Real gases – as opposed to a perfect or ideal gas – exhibit properties that cannot be explained entirely using the ideal gas law. To understand the behaviour of real gases, the following must be taken into account:
compressibility effects;variable specific heat capacityvan der Waals forcesnon-equilibrium thermodynamic effects;issues with molecular dissociation and elementary reactions with variable composition.
For most applications, such a detailed analysis is unnecessary, and the ideal gas approximation can be used with reasonable accuracy. On the other hand, real-gas models have to be used near the condensation point of gases, near critical points, at very high pressures, to explain the Joule–Thomson effect and in other less usual cases.'

My favourite piece of trivia in the world is the derivation of the word 'trivia' itself...
If you know a bit of Latinm, you can pull it apart and get 'Tri-' (three) '-via' (roads).
It refers to a place at the south of Rome, near the Porta Ostiensis, where three great roads converged on the city. This was also a favoured spot where women and slaves would come to do their washing.
And, with eff all else to do to pass the time during this thankless task, they gossiped.
Hence anything that was rumour or unsubstantiated was given the name of 'trivia', because that's where the gossip probably came from.

The ancient Greeks had no word for blue...
Consequently, their descriptions of the sky were somewhat simplistic. The nearest words they had - glaukos and kynos - more more expressions of relative light/dark intensity.
Homer, for instance, only mentions four colours in the whole of the Iliad & Odyssey, roughly translated as black, white, greenish-yellow (applied to honey, sap & blood) and purply red (applied to wine, sea & sheep, oddly).
When speaking of the sky, Homer sometimes describes it as 'bronze' - ie dazzlingly bright, like the sheen of a polished shield, rather than as an actual colour. |

Actually heroin was first isolated in 1874 by Alder Wright
Opium however has been used as a pain killer for around 6000 years!
Heroin was restricted in the UK due to the level of work days missed as a result. It was indeed used as a supposedly non- addictive alternative to Morphine |

"All of the nazi uniforms, from the waffen ss right up to goerings and hitlers etc were designed by Hugo Boss, who was a fervent nazi "
This is slightly misleading. *The* Hugo Boss (1885–1948), who founded the clothing firm that went on to become the fashion house that bares his name, was a member of the SS (largely fo business reasons but hey) and gave money to the Nazi Party (NSDAP) it IS TRUE that his firm designed SS uniforms BUT IT IS NOT TRUE that his firm did more than that.
The book, Hugo Boss, 1924-1945: The History of a Clothing Factory During the Weimar Republic and Third Reich, reveals the designer's involvement with the Nazis went much further.
Not only did he outfit the SS, but he took advantage of forced labor in his factory.
"[A] total of 140 Polish forced laborers, mostly women, as well as some 40 French prisoners of war, were made to work for Boss during the Holocaust. They were housed in a camp in one area of the factory, and lived in extremely poor conditions with "uncertain" food and hygiene levels."
The apology, which appeared on the Hugo Boss website on Thursday, therefore states that the company wanted to "express its profound regret to those who suffered harm or hardship at the factory run by Hugo Ferdinand Boss under National Socialist rule."
So, sorry, 180 factory workers! There. Was that so hard?
Just six million more apologies to go. |

Continuing the Nazi themed facts, an IBM subsidiary, with support from their American head office, helped to catalogue all of the people who were sent to concentrations and extermination camps, it couldn't have been done without them.
And going back to our coca cola theme from earlier, Fanta was invented as a way for coca cola to sell beverages in Germany after sanctions were put in place and coca cola itself could no longer be sold. |

This is true. The slave owners had breeding programs...even down to raping the females to produce lighter coloured slaves that were more acceptable for working in the house. They did try and breed bigger stronger males for outside work. |

"Did u kno that Nitrous Oxide (N02 aka laughing gas) is highly addictive?
Humphry Davy was an important chemist of the 1800s, which explains how he had access to the nitrous.
He once inhaled five pints of the gas, promptly fell to the floor and remained blacked out for nearly three hours. He kept trying it, though - you know, for scientific purposes.
Davy decided nitrous was better than alcohol because there was no hangover.
It's evident from his papers when the addiction truly began - his writing becomes filled with poetic descriptions of the stuff, such as when he suggested that nitrous must be the air in heaven.
Watch out, that stuf'll kill ya. "
Nitrous oxide is N2O. NO2 is nitrogen dioxide, which is the toxic emission from diesel engines that the VW issue is about |

A tremelo arm on a guitar is no such thing. Tremelo is a variation in amplitude (volume). It is in fact a vibrato arm as it varies the pitch.
Most people call poppers Amy Nitrate, there's even a song of the same name, but that will kill you. It should be Amyl Nitrite.
Neither Edison, nor Swann, invented the electric lightbulb - Humphrey Davy invented the electric arc lamp, and some Belgian guy I think, invented the incandescent filament lamp.
James Watt didn't invent the steam engine - he invented the condensing boiler to improve efficiency (by around 800%) of the Newcomen engine - he patented the condensing boiler and made a fortune.
Caxton didn't invent the printing press, the ancient Chinese had that in the 4th century BC. Caxton invented movable type.
All those Sci Fi films with explosions in space are silly - space is a vacuum and sound can't propagate in a vacuum, so there should be silence - as per Kubrick's excellent 2001 a Space Odyssey.
Water does not freeze at 0C, in fact liquids do not have a freezing point as they can be supercooled past the melting point of their solid state. 0C is actually the melting point of ice (at 76mm of mercury air pressure)

Ah, and approx. 99.86% of the total mass of the solar system is contained in the Sun.
About three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen; the rest is mostly helium, with much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron.
Most of the matter in the solar system is made of stuff that's lighter than air and most of it is almost empty. As I tell my daughter.

Did you know coca cola originally had in it and was sold by pharmacists in the US?"

On average, the contributors to this thread have an IQ at least 10 per cent higher than the Fab norm.
Siemens never made semen.
Swingers tend to die younger. This is because they are more hedonistic than the norm.
Because of the same hedonistic tendencies Fabswingers are at least thrice as likely to smoke than the average population and twice as likely to drink to excess. |

Night Vision Goggle displays are green because we can differentiate more shades of green than any other colour.
When people say NVG goggles slap them..They effectively just saif night vision goggles goggles.
The sky is blue due to the scattering of light from the sun (which comes in as white) from small particles high in the atmosphere. The reds/yellows of sunrise/sunsets are because the sun is at a lower angle and we are seeing the scatter against larger heavier particles lower in the atmosphere. |

Look at your hand. Wiggle your fingers.
99.9999999% of what you are looking at is nothing. The gaps between subatomic particles held together by weak electomagnetic forces. So how does hitting something work...thats a lot of nothing making up everything.
Now go and sit down in a dark room til your head stops hurting. |
