We recently upgraded to Windows 10 without no problems, went to upgrade my son's today and it's running very slow, it's a HP Pavilion laptop model DV6-3100SA. Only thing I can see on device manager is that the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series driver is not installed, could this be the issue or is the laptop just to slow to deal with Win10 and help would be appreciated |

If you can get on the Internet, have a search for a driver for that. .it's the graphics card. Even better, have a look on HP's website, see if there are other Windows 10 Drivers for this laptop. Having the right drivers for everything is certainly a good place to start.

There does appear to be particular issues with HP laptops. Heard from a few sources that they run slow with Windows 10, or fail to install it even. so far not heard of the same issues with any other brand of laptop or PC.
You have until next August before the free upgrade period expires, may be worth rolling back to previous and awaiting news from HP themselves. I suspect a possible bios upgrade.
One further thought, have you installed the 32bit or the 64bit version? 4Gb RAM is upper limit for 32bit but not quite enough for 64bit... if you have the 64bit version then consider upping the ram to 6 or 8Gb. |

"Did you know that after a year you have to pay 100£ for windows 10? So I wont upgrade lol I am happy with windows 8."
No you don't, if installed on 7 or 8 (not enterprise version as yet) in the first year it is free for life.
If upgrading from XP then your hardware may not be up to it anyway but if it is then you have to buy Windows 10 at £100 |

Not had a Windows PC at home for nearly 4 years (Apple fanboy) - use Windows 7 at work and when I connect remotely (via my Mac)
I had Windows 7 on my last laptop but was a bit clunky, would install 8.1 on a new build if I was making a new one - just because Windows normally beds down after a few months
I must add I am still using Yosemite OS X as I haven't git round to upgrading (will do it when I get bk from hols) |

How do you find XP? I'm thinking about upgrading from 95"
There is no longer support updates for XP I had XP for 10 years but when the support was dropped things started to shut down so I,m running windows 10 had it for a week now not as good as XP but ok so far |

Best bits of 8.1! Are there any?? The only thing I've seen that I like is that the network performance shows throughput in B/s rather than bandwidth percentage. |

Although I would recommend locking down all the privacy settings.
Apart from that though it's as stable as fuck. |

your welcome to your own opinion of the operating system however its early days for it, as most are still finding out what it really does and what is going to happen next year so at the moment the ones that upgraded to it are all on a waiting game
for those that are dumb you wouldnt have instructions on how to change its settings in the windows 10 if it wasnt for the dumb folk |

My 7 upgraded to 10 with barely a few minutes of effort and it's been simple and no trouble at all. Lots of threads since launch day and generally positive feedback on fab.
Drivers are easy to get and it's always worth checking you're using the latest imo, as manufacturers improve them or find security issues with old ones that are made safer. |

If its an HP laptop - its probably full of bloatware, its a fairly underpowered laptop I'm afraid.
My suggestion is to copy all your personal files to a flash drive/ one drive etc.
If you have windows 10 on a disk (if not then you can make a portable install that will run from a USB stick or burn a DVD) Then do a format of the hard drive - then install windows 10 fresh, don't stick all the rubbish that HP load on, its not needed - Make sure you not running any of the useless virus programs like Norton or Mcafee - (get something like ESET instead)
You'll find it should run better - in fact many state that windows 10 runs better on old machines than 7 or 8.
10 is quite good - certainly better than the rubbish that is 8(hence why M$ dumped it) Windows has habit of every second version being better - so XP good Vista bad - 7 good - 8 bad.
I agree lock down the privacy settings - but they no worse really than if you have a google.mail account or Facebook - you've already sold you soul with either of them anyway. |

All new PC / Laptop owners should learn about PC Decrapifier (google it) bloatware is a common problem.

To clarify, there is a lot of data passed back to Microsoft. It isn't however "tracking your every move" rather it is delivering personalised services.
When you say "Cortana, where is the nearest Swingers Club", it needs to know where you are to find the nearest. If you want the adverts on websites to be more relevant to your requirements & interests, then again this information needs to be processed..... these things are also just the same as companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook,Twitter and Apple have been doing for years.
It was reported in July, that there were over 67 million copies of Windows 10 installed World-Wide. Nobody is going to be reading through personal data from 67 million peoples PC's.
Rather than being a big "Privacy Scandal" it is just the mechanism that's needed to provide the Personalised Services that the end users tell these companies that they want.

Apple don't track people's data in the same way as the others, nor sell it like the others. Anyone with android, and Google now phone, you've already given everything to google, including whenever you just walk down the street, android is set to track by bouncing off wifi even when you don't connect. Facebook same selling and leaching everything about you, but Google are the worse, hence all the privacy tools and warnings they been forced to make. Safest phone and os is apples including OS X. They process your information in the phone not on their servers, Windows 10 does by nature of using cortana behave more like Google, but you can lock it down more, equally Microsoft don't make their prime business out of selling data like Google do...hence why that pedophile was caught because Google have bots tracking google mail accounts, a good news story, but just shows how everything you type or write on a android or Google account is being scanned. |

Yes, it is likely that your AMD drivers are causing problems.
The solution - dunno.
I upgraded this PC and it seems to be ok but the graphics card isn't likely to be officially supported by windows 10. I don't play graphically intensive games so I don't really see any problems browsing the internet, using two monitors or using music software, which are the primary functions of my PC.
Did your sons PC say it was ready for the update or did you do it anyhow?
I did it anyhow and I'm happy with the results but I'm not a gamer. |

"Folks, 10 tracks your every move..
No it doesn't" You'd be surprised how minimal the privacy settings are, you can hardly safeguard any of your online habits. Yes, you will be forced to share everything you do (when on the internet) with anything you have ever logged in to: all you email accounts, your i-shopping / app-stores, twitter, facebook, instagram, flicker, pinterest etc., etc. |

"I upgraded to win 10 then rolled back to win 7 2 weeks later. Its ugly clumsy and clunky! How do I roll back? Do I have to use a Restore Point?" You have to do a factory reset, that gets your pc to the state it was wen you got it, although everything will be erased, so better save the files.

micros**t has never supported amd as prefered intel based systems
if it wasnt for amd being better than intel for the usage of 1 memory stick instead of 2 you would be still stuck buying 2 sticks of memory
the other is amd was more for gamers machines and beat intel hands down for speed for many years |

This was the case in the early 2000's but hasn't been for a long time.
Microsoft has no issue with running on AMD chipsets, unfortunately they're just not a quick or efficient currently as the Intel ones.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick with that it is free for life but after the year from release date if you want windows 10 you would have to pay for it.
the support from windows 7 will end soon so will be no more security updates which will leave you open to Trojan & Malware attacks |

If you want the adverts? I don't want ANY adverts. Advertising is killing the web experience for me. And is wasted on me. In general I know what I want because I research for it - admittedly on the web - but I am in control. This is especially true on handheld devices in non 4G areas. |

I'm going to get a second hard disk, install win7 on it then win10. I'll try it -but it will have to be much better than 7 for me to stay with it until I have no choice to ditch 7. My mum is still using win2000 - as it does what she wants (she doesn't trust the internet so never used it). |

Windows 10 is free! Why I ask myself has MS suddenly given you something free? It's the biggest spy ware software available on the market. Ask any compete programmer and repairer. It's a great piece of kit no doubt but it has so many back doors it'll makes fab look like a virgin. |

The advertising isn't optional though, you'll get adverts either way. Personally if I'm getting adverts I'd rather have relevant ones. Also, whilst I agree completely that adverts are often a real blight on the web, they are also keeping most of the Internet free. Many web based companies are struggling to fund their web services due more and more people using ad blocking software.

Agree with Cal on advert revenue needs.
Windows 10 mobile is now with us folks. Microsoft released 3 phones - 2 upper end, the 950 and 950 xl and a more mass market model too. Updates will be rolled out to most earlier models too, though functionality will depend upon your phone's specification.
Can't wait to get it, so my PC and phone are more seamless. |

I was speaking to a contractor working for National Rail a couple of years ago. He was working on a railway station PA system which has it`s own dedicated computer which is linked to a central system. It does admittedly have limited requirements but it runs for it`s operating system - Windows 98! And quite happily at that!!! |

Anyone with Facebook(free) a Googlemail account(free) uses google search, YouTube(free) yahoo mail, live/outlook/hotmail(free) have already given away all their privacy, anyone who doesn't have software which blocks tracking, blocks ads, blocks certain cookies and uses the Internet have given away their privacy. How you think those companies are the richest in the world?
Windows 10 can be locked down more - but in actual fact all windows 10 has done is be more honest about it - haven't you noticed the annoying pop ups from google lately - that's because they've been forced to admit how they using everyone's data.
Oh and you'll all have Windows 10 eventually - all others will stop being supported and Windows 10 is last version it will just constantly evolve.
If you want an operating system that is safer and a company that doesn't spy on your data - then move to apple and OS X or IOS. Equally less likely to get a virus. That said you still at same risk as soon as you open a browser or access Facebook/Google etc, but at least Apple try and block some of the spying these companies do. But every face book post you make is being sold
For the user that said they lost their photos - bad mistake not backing them up - regardless of operating system - the primary thing that will often fail in any computer is the hard drive - and normally very hard to recover a broken one without cost - so always back up personal data, photos, email, documents etc either to a USB drive, pen drive, or NAS drive or better still some form of secure cloud service. |
