"I don't know what that means but have a virtual hug! "

Aww thanks. It's a phrase used to describe a particularly rubbish day by those who suffer depression. Churchill talked about writing to 'keep the black dog at bay'.

Sorry to hear that. Do something that makes you happy. And I don't know where in North Yorkshire you are but if you'd like some company let us know.

By the way, I have a black dog who us absolutely amazing. I usually think of her when I'm feeling low. So it has rather good connotations for me.

So, if a black dog day is a crap day, in animal terms what's a great day? A fluffy bunny day? A ginger Tom day? A golden eagle day?

Thanks for the lovely posts. The walk was just what I needed. I always seem to collect things on walks and I now have pockets full of conkers, rosehips and elder leaves (I love the smell). I thought you were supposed to grow out of this by age 6

Conkers are meant to be good for keeping spiders away if you put them in the corner of your room

do what ever you can to change it, small things. Go buy flowers, look at nature and how that changes: Autumn is a great month and seeing your local area in all seasons is a joy. Watch kids play and see their innocence. Do exercise, go for a swim or sauna....... if it will be the same if you allow it

good luck x

I remember a couple years back I was at my lowest, I was signed of work of work for a couple months, didn't want to see anyone, didn't look forward to anything. I decided I had to get myself out of it so I started seeing people, e en had a night out, for my own brother to turn around and say "she can't be that depressed if she is going out" I thought fuck you! I'm helping myself out of a bad situation I could at least have your support.

So my point is the same as _iews, go and do things that will make you put a smile on your face

Thanks again everyone. I do make myself see people and excercise and go for walks and meditate, and all the things you're supposed to. Sometimes though, despite your best efforts, the despair creeps in and before you know it it's bitten you in the arse. I'm doing my best.

The right place

Many years ago I had a bad bout of depression. I have some idea as to what it's like. All I can say is you never know what's around the corner, the clouds will part and the sun will shine again. The story isn't over, the last words haven't been written.

I find nature has a way of curing my black dog times when I immerse myself in its tranquil curves. If I'm really down I can't think straight until I run away to hide in a nice quiet woodland for a few days...

... did it once in Africa many years ago and woke up sharing my mossie net with a tarantula!

There is a serious lack of understanding about mental health, people used to say to me things like, " pull your socks up" or " everyone gets down from time to time ", there isn't a quick fix or way out for a lot of people, I don't mean to put people down who are trying to help, and it's nice that people want to be there for others, but it is a very serious condition, and for a lot of people , there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and for some, there isn't even a tunnel.

Sorry mate but there is light and it can be seen even if it's from a very long distance, I guess it depends on how far into the tunnel you are.yes some may never get out, but many do. I think we( society in general) needs to start tackling mental health in a more positive way rather than wrapping every sufferer in cotton wool.

Yes times call for it, other times people just need a friend or something no matter how small to try and give them a lift.

Personally speaking I have found regular exercise to be better than any medication.

We can help ourselves and while not be 100% cured we can deal with it and cope.

Without hiding behind the mental health banner everytime someone or something upsets you.

Not everyone is ready for this, some have just entered the tunnel and are a long way from the end or even the middle.

I tell myself daily to harden the fuck up, deal with issues and stop running from them.

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

I am lucky to be here today and assure other's you can get better, you can overcome it.

You may always have it but you can learn to control it.

Good luck and peace be with you all xx

But you are assuming upon others, what may work for you, doesn't necessarily work for others. Wrapping in cotton wool, harden the fuck up and hiding behind mental health banners are ignorant phrases to use, and shows a blatant misunderstanding of peoples feelings, how can you possibly know how another person thinks and feels based on your own experiences?

And arnt you also assuming the same thing? By your own word's you assume that you know what is best for everyone.

I never said that what has worked for me will work for other's.

I merely pointed out that, people can find a way forward they just need to find what works for them. A negative outlook and attitude will help Noone.

As for ignorance, u assume that I have no idea what people are and have gone through.

I can tell you 100% I know.

I tell myself to harden the fuck up. I never told anyone else to.

Re read what I said, about positive attitude.

My point is that it can be beaten, not by everyone.

But most need to hit rock bottom before they can start climbing up again.

Finding the way back up is the key, many can't do this alone in fact everyone needs help, it is also very important as to how much the individual is willing to help themselves when they are able.
