How easy ( or hard ) is it to buy a house abroad....In this case Spain; thus avoiding areas that have land grab.
Are there any specialist estate agents over here that can be trusted? |

Spain is a very big place and Agents tend to be local specific.
I is not necessarily about the Agent, but the due diligence that you undertake before closing.
There is a website called kyero that is a bit like Rightmove and at least you can get price conditioned for the area that you are interested in.
Good luck. |

Have you considered what your crime is going to be yet? Just so you fit in. |

I take it, if this country is so bad you are desperate to leave, you will forsaking all claim to the NHS etc should you fall ill while over there or will you be like many ex pats who can't stand to live in this country until they have to pay for their health care? |

I'd suggest you rent somewhere for a few months before taking the plung. You may see things differently then. Spain has its good points but to live there you must speak Spanish or the locals, especially officialdom will blank you. Also the country is corrupt and bribes and ripoffs occur all over the place. The average Spaniard will happily rip off some naive Brit,,see how many get conned into timeshares or running a bar somewhere.. |

I don't know about Spain, but I did move from another country to this one. I would strongly suggest renting a house before buying anything. You don't really know what you are going to like until you have lived in a place for a bit.
Rent, get a feel for things, then think about buying.
Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that's a sweeping generalisation there and it's just the odd one or two who are corrupt. There are thousands and thousands of ex pats in Spain and if it were that bad all over the place then we'd have heard about it. Of course you'll get some people that way inclined but you get those everywhere. If you do your research thoroughly and find a reputable agent you shouldn't have any issues. I had a holiday place over there until I sold it last year and the locals became very good friends so it's not all bad at all. |

on the road to nowhere in particular |
Get a good notary public that understands English and Spanish, don't use the conveyancer recommended by the estate agent, find an independent one. Be even more diligent than if you were buying in this country.
Rent first.

I agree but to really settle its essential to speak spanish. I think there is no good in living in some coastal enclave of ex pats. I have personal experience of life in Spain. |

A good place to move if you qualify, but most won't.

I'm afraid this is uninformed nonsense. British living in Spain are entitled to free treatment under the Spanish healthcare system if they are paying the normal social security payments, and it's ranked among the best in the world.

This. I lived there for 3 years, came back about 12 years ago for family reasons and never had any problems. I still have Spanish and English friends there and though I do speak some Spanish now not knowing the language was never a problem, people are always keen to help. I bought an apartment there 2 years ago and the estate agent and Notaria could not have been more honest or helpful, even returning some money that I had overpaid. So long as you have a solicitor with you who can translate the contract as you sign you won't go far wrong. Just remember to add about 12% on top of the purchase price for taxes etc. Good luck |

When the UK is only 15% white and English is a tiny minority language - then I'll log a complaint.
The UK has a long way to go before that. But if you're unhappy about immigrants to the UK then you might wanna stop encouraging others to do the same. |

You couldn't apply for an EHIC if we left the EU, as that's what they're based on.
But no one knows what will/might/could/won't/shouldn't change, until it happens. |

Sure. And if you were working there you would be paying NI and getting their healthcare and if retired then would private health insurance be that expensive in the scheme of things anyway? |

If you retired to Spain private insurance could be very expensive, depending on your age, health and medical history. Most countries that have an insurance system subsidise it for the elderly (as they're no longer working) so if you've retired to Spain and don't work there, why would the Spanish Gov cover you?
Likewise if you're working there as a non-citizen/non-EU person, I don't know what criteria they use but they don't have to treat you the same as they treat their own citizens (that's the clause with the EU though). |

Indeed,,,if you want to move to outside the EU to some of the most popular places eg Aus,NZ,Canada,US..well unless you have a serious amount of money and fulfil the demanding visa entry requirments then its a non starter. The best way is to find and marry a citizen of that country but even then you might only get an entry visa and to get true residency/citizenship can take years after that.
Of course if you qualify for the US visa lottery you could try that.
Life in many of these Euro countries may seem idyllic when on holiday but moving there, living there and making a living there is a whole different matter.
The tax regimes in many other Euro countries are far worse than the UK, hence the thriving black economy.
Yes,,there is still much to be said for life in blighty,, |

It's possibly easier to buy in spain than in the UK. Despite the negative replies here, spain is a lovely country. We are buying for a second time in la marina urb as a holiday retreat. (I will be spending Jan 2016 doing it up lucky me lol) although there are few worries there make sure you use a reputable legal firm and you will be fine x |

Too hot's given you some good advice there.
I myself considered Spain. How ever I went for Portugal. Mainly due to Spain's history where it comes to people buying land and building houses.
How ever if your looking for something that's already built.
It's best to go there spend some time and check a few out with an agent as the best properties usually go before they actually get online and they'll know about then
If the cost of doing that is too much , I'm less than half hour from Spain . Glad to help make a dream come true |
