When you've fixed this on the site, can I make a request for the same treatment for 'it's' and 'its', please?
Thank 'u'! |

I'm finding it hard enough not mentally sorting the October Birthday thread into chronological order - I don't have time to correct everyone's English too! |

Bear.
Bare = naked.
"
I don't really understand the saying anyway.. Is it like an actual bug on a bear being irritating? |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
"God, this subject bores me."
Corrected it for you.
Seriously, you're right - the subject has been done to death and nothing new ever gets added.
However, that's also true about most subjects, being reflective of the fact that new people keep joining.
So you'll have to accept it and learn to ignore it. |

And the person who starts the thread always has a grammatical error or spelling mistake somewhere. It's the law. |

Knowing how the forum works, if you're going to start a thread about grammar or spelling.....you better make damn sure you're profile will stand up to the scrutiny that you demand of others. |

You used to be able to buy t-shirts that said "I've got a bare behind" on the front, with the Hofmeister bear on the back.
Or did I dream that?

I'd forgotten that. I remember the ad seeing that link. I think the t-shirt must have said "bear behind". |

OP I feel your pain. For me it's apostrophes. I feel there is so much ignorance of when to use them correctly, that eventually all plurals will have apostrophes, as a matter of course, e.g. Tatoo's, lady's etc. Makes me despair but what can you do?
I know, delete and block!
Maybe I should put it on my profile, so that I can attract suitable pedants to my bed...( would certainly decrease the amount of crap messages I get..) |

Possibly, back in those days I was still more interested in Biology than English, so my attention may have been elsewhere

You're not sure of your answer
You are not sure of your answer
When you see the apostrophe there it is replacing missing letters so
You're = you are or you were
Your = belonging to you |

Eats Shoots and Leaves is a good read. Also a good profile option for one of those who can lick for hours types.
I have sensed less use of
Could/should Of' recently, so the weekly lessons can improve things. |

I still have my copy of "The Complete Plain Words" that I was instructed to buy on my first day in my first proper job.
It doesn't stop me slipping in the occasional "off of" (à la Scott Mills), just out of devilment

Understand where you're coming from. However biggest annoyance for me is the inability to use punctuation; the amount of times I've read something wrong, due to no punctuation, is unthinkable. That's what happens when you don't use it though. Thankfully there's Microsoft word out there now, to help everyone.
Although, (not grammar related) accents get to me! I live in Leicester and can't stand the accent! It's doggy not diggeh. Seriously changing 'ee' to 'eh'... Drives me mad! |

Also....
Don't let other's petty jealousies affect you as that is the effect they wish to create. |

Effect is what happens to something.
Affect is the happening of it.

high horse definition. To be on one's “high horse” is to be disdainful or conceited:
Sally got tired of Peter's constant snobbery and his need to correct everyone's grammar, so she told him to get off his high horse. |

I have to be honest here, there are plenty of sites for the discussion of grammar - I don't think it's here. Who really cares? And if you do, why not go and volunteer in a school and help make a real difference? |

There are plenty of other sites to discuss sex but, not unreasonably, people talk about it here as well. Obviously other people DO consider this a suitable place to discuss and are a sign that some people do care. If you're not interested why read the thread?
Personally the reason I don't volunteer in a school is that I already work full time.

"I love it when people try and be smart... "
The lesson for you is, when trying to belittle other people in relation to spelling and grammar, ensure firstly that every piece of text you have ever written on this site, be that on your profile or on any forum post, is absolutely word perfect. |
