Now, I am a pretty liberal guy, and everyone can get their kicks however they wish really, as long as no-one else gets hurt, (unless they want to be hurt..;-) ) But twice this year I found mainstream films that have been released that have really shocked me. Granted both are horror films designed to shock, but the first is about stitching people together, against their will, to form one long digestive tract, like a human centipede, and the other is a Serbian film (quite literally) which deals with topics that would get me banned from the Forum for even mentioning here. (You can find these easily enough on Wikipedia if you want to know more)
I don’t want a discussion of the contents of the films on here, and I recommend a Mod locks this down if people start, but do you think censorship laws have got too lax now? Is this no worse than Driller Killer etc in the 80’s, and I am just being too sensitive? Are there topics that shouldn’t be made into entertainment or is anything game in art?
Deep for a Friday night I know, but it’s been bothering me….

Censorship - or how films are cut for release in the UK goes through phases.
Things relax, and then there is a clampdown.
Considering what is allowed in an 18 film sexual content wise (i.e. not a lot), this is extremely mild compared to the horror genres with blood and gore.
The R18 system generally is a waste of time in the days of the internet if you are looking for some adult content. |

Its to do with certification IMHO, the studios know that 18 cert films wont bring as much cash in as 12, 15 cert films,the recession has even hit Hollywood, so they wont risk alienating prospective audiences..hence most stuff is now 15 that prob should be 18  |

Despite my being an out and out perve, who's thoughts sometimes cause concern to myself, I do agree with the O.P.
I do believe certain things in the cinema and definately on the Internet need a greater degree of censorship.
I'm not talking about the sexual stuff but more the sick,twisted off the wall stuff.
This is the kind of thing that desensitizes many youngsters and, I believe, leads to acts of cruelty and extreme anti social behaviour. R

Thanks for that, I agree. Nothing very much surprises me in porn, but to make films about these things and hide behind the "but it's art" banner is wrong. It adds nothing to society and risks some sick idiot thinking "it looks fun".... |

Censorship laws haven't got too lax, the opposite in fact, the BBFC are still making barmy decisions arbitrarily. Check out the website "MelonFarmers" for all the news of how the great and the good have decided artistic endeavour should be trimmed in the name of "good taste".
I do actually support film classification to protect minors from seeing things that might screw them up a bit, but believe that as a grown adult, I should be able to watch whatever, without some stuffy old fart deciding that some fantasy unpleasantness, created on film with effects, make-up and CGI, is "inappropriate". I'll decide thank you very much, and if I see something that deeply affects me, well, more fool me for watching it if there's a warning on it.
The thing is that warnings nowadays have no gravity, they are totally ignored by one and all.
Maybe if people actually respected the Age Rating systems for other things, then film classifications could be more accurate, and a warning would be itself a good pointer that it might not be the kind of film you want to see. By which I mean, don't let your kids play 18-rated GTA "Death Fuck Car Park" (coming soon to an X-Box near you. Possibly), it's not for minors!! |
