Have you heard the latest? A law banning smoking in vehicles carrying children has come into force in England and Wales.
I think it is a good idea as the car become like a chamber with smoke which is dangerous as well, what is your thoughts? |

Completely agree with it Can't see how it's going to be enforced with all the cuts to the Po Po though.
Sure people can get through a car journey or pull over and smoke. |

Smoking should be banned full stop, you would run up to a burning house and try get high on the fumes.
I think anything that causes a driver not to have two hand on a steering wheel, should be banned, eating, drinking, smoking, wanking. They all can be done when the car is still |

so you dont change gear then as you have to take hand off wheel for that |

I quite like the idea of asking some one round for a drink or whatever and then after an hour or so, asking them if they mind standing outside for 15 minutes while you have a smoke!
On a more serious note from a fit and healthy smoker for a very long time.... I think it's a disgusting habit and I wish I could stop. Smoking in cars with kids is a no brainer... It shouldn't need to be a law, it's common sense. |

It's us smokers that pay the most money to NHS and government!
For all the non smokers out there that have a problem with us puffers, do you enjoy a beer at the weekend?
Drinking should be banned by car licence holders! A menace to the road! |

Too true,as do docs n nurses.if it wasn't for tax revenue on fags, then everyone's income tax would be considerably higher.maybe then there wouldn't be such a large anti-smoking brigade

What about the numerous people who smoke in their homes, around their children. It's around them and in the air they breath the whole time they are at home/sleeping? Are they going to ban that too?
Personally I don't smoke in the house. I do smoke in my car. If I have a fag in the car just before my kids get in surely they are then going to inhale the smoke?
How the hell are they going to police this for Christ sake? There is a ban on people smoking in work vehicles, I see it all the time even an eddy stobbart lorry!!!
People who drink and drive, take drugs and drive, use mobile phones and drive and people who drive at break neck speeds are more of a danger to my kids while they are in the car then me having the odd fag with the windows open!!! The police aren't any good at preventing any of those so how are they going to stop smokers in cars?? |

We think it is a bad law poorly thought out and almost impossible to enforce.
There is no difference between smoking in a car two minutes before the children get in and smoking in a car when the children are in it.

Its just common sense not to smoke in the car with children in but the minority who do won't be put off by the very slim chance of getting caught, its just another dig at the smoker. And just driving past the kids does more harm anyway. Wonder how many anti smoking high horse riders are happy to drop their children off at the school gates |

According to a study produced by ASH in 2013:
Research commissioned by ASH has shown that the total cost to society (in England) is approximately £12.9 billion a year.5 This includes the cost to the NHS of treating diseases caused by smoking in England which is approximately £2 billion a year.5 Other costs include:
• loss in productivity due to premature deaths (£3bn)
• cost to businesses of smoking breaks (£5bn)
• smoking-related sick days (£1bn)• social care costs of older smokers (£1.1bn)
• costs of fires caused by smokers’ materials (£391m) |

As has been said in other threads, people with an agenda will always find figures to suit themselves. And these figures are nothing compared to the harm caused by air pollution from cars or from eating too much rubbish |

What a bunch of fucking hypocrites
You know the difference between smokers and non smokers?.
At least smokers admit to their wrong doing, there simply addicted to it, no excuses.
We don't argue that smoking doesn't cause cancer or several other breathing conditions, we don't argue that not every doctor agrees on its severity, we don't argue we've got the right to poison other people through our addiction, we don't argue that it's a natural cycle within the natural plant tobacco...
It's an addiction that we enjoy but we move along with what the scientists and doctors advice!!.
Now you non smokers with your car travel, air travel, carbon spewing life style..... Your all in denial of your addiction and are poisoning everyone every day, you fill the oceans with plastic shit, the air full of NOx, the parks full of Styrofoam....
And you still think you have the right to stand on your soap box |

Actually, I'm not standing on any soapbox.. I do own a car and a motorbike, the mileage I cover in them combined is less than the 10 thousand miles a year I travel on my push-bike. The topic was about smoking!
My previous post was just highlighting the "financial cost" to Britain of smoking, and it was a response to statements that smokers' taxes are propping up the country. The small part of one of the many available reports suggests that it's not quite so black & white as that.
In my opinion, the true cost of smoking to Britain is the premature deaths of too many people due to their addiction.
Personally, my loss was my father who died aged 59, having had multiple heart operations, tumours removed, stents, and go knows what else... all due to smoking. AND is still have to watch my mum puffing away five years later and wonder how long before she goes the same way.

Oh and to add to that, I suspect that not all car drivers and air passengers are non-smokers.
Travel related pollution is another issue to tackle, it seems to me a really bizarre argument to use in the defence of smoking. It's a bit like saying a knife murderer shouldn't be prosecuted because more people get killed by gun murderers

It wasn't a defence of smoking!
It was an observation of one addiction to another!

It is difficult to police, probably almost impossible. I guess the idea is raising the social stigma of smoking. Some parents don't realise how much of an effect smoking around their kids has on them!
Kids are pretty snotty anyway, just because they have partially developed immune systems, and they spend time with lots of other snotty kids to pass the viruses around. Smoke around the children, and they have a lower defense against these infections, they are more likely to be asthmatic etc |

Sorry for your loss but I don't think you can put it all down to smoking.
And how can premature deaths be a cost to Britain? Surely it means that pension payments and cost of care in old age are being saved? I wish that I had never started smoking but looking back I've always enjoyed it and don't think my life would have been as enjoyable without it. If that means I die younger so be it, la vida bien vivida |

The best thing that can be done is to stop people smoking in the first place! That is the only sure fire way to stop smoking related diseases.
My dad had given up smoking for 30 years but still died of a smoking related cancer! So even if you give up doesn't mean it won't kill you, just don't start! Simple |

If that means I die younger so be it, la vida bien vivida
Bring down prices of cigarettes to £1 a pack of 200. Smokers will be dropping dead all over the place. Pension bill saved.
Sounds good to me but it takes a while to die from it and I'm sure you'd prefer to take a slice of smokers tax while we're alive
I don't care.
So why comment
Bless you."
