Could have been anything. It was an hour and who knows if it was representative of how they spend their time.

No I got the point, you missed mine. They obviously weren't out to socialize and have a laugh in the hour that you saw them but they might do that during the other 23 hours in the day.

They wernt out to socialize in a pub? So they all decided to go out with the intent of looking at their phones?

I have no idea. I agree that people seem to spend an awful lot of time on their phones instead of talking to the person or people they're with but it isn't just teenagers in pubs.

Every generation has something that the older generation thinks will destroy society, communication and family life it was the radio, the television, then computer games now it's Facebook.

I think it's really sad when you see a couple who are clearly in a relationship just not speaking to each other or one of them is reading a newspaper while the or her just sits there.

Out of interest how would people view a group of older people sitting in a cafe all reading a book and not talking to each other?

Once a month me and a load of friends I grew up with go out for a meal.

The first time we did it they all spent most of the night on their phones and I walked out because it was annoying me and I hadn't seen them since I was 12

They apologised so from then on we all put our phones face down in the middle of the table and the first one to pick theirs up pays for the entire meal

This.

If being on their phone is what they want to do then it's hardly bothering anybody is it? It's not affecting you personally is it? They're just sitting quietly minding their own business, I can't see how that can be viewed as rude at all.

Same here...if I'm going out in a social situation I will often not have my phone with me or it stays in the car...I have no need for it when I have real live people with me....in saying that I often don't have it with me when I'm on my own...I like the peace and quiet.

I find one of the best things about being in a solid relationship is the ability to just be together without incessant talking. I often go out with my husband for breakfast and we'll both be reading the paper or I'll be reading a book. I'm exactly the same with my dad and one or two of my friends. We know and love each other enough to not NEED to chatter.

When ours have mates round, they all sit around on their phones talking to each other via the bloody phone/FB/Whatsapp! Think most teenagers have lost the art of conversation. And any other kind of chat involves grunting.

Couldn't that be the same with these teenagers. We often go for coffee and sit with a paper, a book or our phones or kindled. The couples I was referring to in my original post are the ones where they just stare our of the window seeming to have nothing to say to each other

It could well be. I can also totally understand why teenagers may seemingly take solace in online communication. I always felt so conspicuous and self conscious and awkward when I was in my early teens, if someone had given me an opt out whereby I could easily maintain all my friendships and communicate via my phone I totally would have taken it.

Just sticking up for the quiet ones, I'm not much of a talker. I do know what you mean though, you can sense sometimes that there's a hostile or empty silence as opposed to being together in quiet content.

when we get rid of the kids of a weekend(which isn't that often) we make a point of going out for breakfast on the Sunday morning somewhere nice and reading the sunday papers. It is one of lifes luxuries that we dong get to do that often anymore. Does it make us unsociable doing something that we both wanted to do... Much discussion is had about some of the more contemptuous articles. Xxx

That's exactly the point I was trying to make, just because it's teenagers doing it on phones doesn't make it bad. They might have all just downloaded the Guardian app.........

I hate kids have mobiles etc. Really not good unless its a mobile that cant join the internet.

When on holiday I was horrified to see babies watching stuff on mobiles/ tablets at mealtimes in the hotel to keep them quiet ffs.

I agree that the sight of adults behaving like morans on a mobile is sad. How many times have we seen people cross a road on a mobile and nearly got knocked over?

We used to takes books and colouring in stuff to keep our kids entertained during long meals in restaurants and hotels as well as including them in our conversation, if tablets had been available we would have used them too it's preferable to squirmy kids spoiling other people's enjoyment. It's not the use of the device thats a problem it's how it's used.

I'm totally down with people using whatever tactic to keep their children under control in a restaurant. It's no different from a book or a colouring book really.

I work in a pub/restaurant and I love to people watch!

Hate it when you try to serve food and the whole family have to move their iPads before you can give them their food. Your left standing there with hot, heavy plates waiting for them to finish their games etc, that I find rude!

On the other hand provided they keep the volume down (needed to tell some) I'd rather the little ones played on tablets/phones rather than running around screaming while the parents are on their phones.

Phones are not permitted at meal times in or out but then my kids are well behaved so there is no need.

Older couples come in and sit and read but then tend to discuss over their meal which is nice but sometime you get couples come in who just sit there, hardly a word spoken, have one drink, eat and then leave. Can't see the point!
