"I don't really meet in hotels but I'd split it or one pay for something to eat and drink and the other pay for the room"
How would you go about the payment if you were to book in advance, would the one suggesting a hotel meet pay upfront then hope the other person turns up to pay their half to you. |

For our personal use we use the site you mention or laterooms and there are a couple of hotels we stay at regularly that will offer us an equivalent price to the booking sites and throw in a meal or a bottle of wine as a loyalty reward.
For swinging purposes I think it would be good to offer to pay half for the room depending on circumstances or if there were more than two people whatever proportion was appropriate. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

If it was someone I didn't k ow I'd ask them to pay on their card then I wouldn't of lost anything if they didn't turn up

I've always wondered this too. We have only met in hotels when we were staying overnight anyway so we just paid since it was our room for the night. Never really understood how the whole "who pays upfront" thing worked....

I've done just about every combination of paying, not paying and going halves. Depends who I'm meeting and who (if anyone is staying in the room). Generally halves though, and I either use booking.com or book directly with the hotel I want. |

Booking .com only reserve your room you don't actually pay till you arrive. I use it every week for work.
Hotels .com have started doing 10 bookings get a free night offer so I will be looking at that. |

I tend to book directly with hotel brands, as it usually is the only guaranteed way to get frequent guest stay membership points, upgrades etc.
I use IHG, as I like Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza.

Yes I know you can reserve it and pay about £20 more for that which is a good idea, but there is still a chance you get there that day and they don't turn up |

Well you cannae split it halfways on a booking site
I use trivago btw
Usually I have the hotel booking, and is agreed beforehand anyway that is split of the evening or perhaps they but the dinner etc.
Leaving the money in an envelope by the bedside is considered bad form ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Good idea, I think if we have at least both paid no one is being left to fork out all of if one or the other doesn't turn up. |

I'd leave it to the person who proposed the meet
I'm "lucky" in that a lot of where I stay is business related and therefore claimable.
I think a big test is the whole reliability issue, would you potentially meet with someone that might let you down. It's a difficult call ![](/icons/s/2/halo.gif) |

You can never really tell if someone new is reliable or not, regardless of verifications.

If I've said I'll host, then I'll pay
I had to do this recently, due to unforeseen circumstances my place was unavailable, and as I'd told the couple I was hosting, I said that I'd arrange and pay for a hotel instead, it was the honourable thing to do
As we knew each other and had met before, it wasn't a financial risk, and having been in the trade before, I knew how to get a very good deal! |

You're quite brave, planning the night in a hotel with someone you've never met before.
But just sounds all so serious- you negotiating who gets which side of the bed??

Have you asked the person you are meeting? They may simply agree to pay it upfront, or give you half when you meet. Don't get drawn into a meet like a potential date. It is what it is, so you can be open about discussing things.
Plus, if the meet starts to stutter and give excuses when you do mention the costs etc, this might be an indication of thither they will show up or not.
Alternative is you could always meet socially then book last minute via the app if all goes well. Obviously depends on the range of hotels in the area where you are meeting though. |

I'm far from thinking of it as a potential date and do discuss, meeting in hotels is pretty new to me and wanted some advice. |

With 700 rooms that wasn't always too much of a problem... With 70, I did get a few unhappy punters (although they didn't complain TOO loudly when I offered to investigate personally and provide a through report to be forwarded to their home within the next few days... Just in case the other half opened it ) |

Arrange a meet for a Monday night, Sundays are usually the quietest night of the week in the industry, so most rooms are likely to have been unoccupied the night before...
Most hotels are happy to check you in early if the room's empty, no need to bribe! |
