"Give a shit. We've known there's been ice there for quite some time."
You seem underwhelmed.
Liquid water could point to there being life. Life means we're not alone (although any reasonable mind knows that already). |

Even if we aren't alone which to be fair we know is virtually impossible, then what is it going to achieve?! More religious wars? Peace on earth? If we find a 3 headed mammal I don't think it's going to change much at all lol... |

we always seem to define 'life' as something akin to what we have...but there may be loads of life on all of the other planets tat we aren't capable of seeing or understanding. Not even needing to be linked to water, air, oxygen or anything that we understand...
Might just have been hovering around the first moon landing folk, having a good old laugh! |

Again, what does this mean for us?. If we find a bug are we going to re write all text books, change religions? The answer is nothing lol nothing at all! |

Mars is the closest, and most habitable of all the Solar System's planets. If we are to make a go of it, in galactic terms, Mars is next on the hit list, after the moon.
The discovery of water already present on Mars means that we have sources of two essentials for human life - water and oxygen - already present.

The existence of free flowing water on Mars is groundbreaking.
Individual scientific findings don't mean much in a vacuum, but the cumulative knowledge can lead to things that change our lives in very real ways. Basic understanding of physics alone may not have seemed important, but it is now the foundation of much of our modern technology.
Small steps in science lead to big things.

I'm completely opposite of that lol I'm just stating the obvious. I do believe there is better than us etc etc and I'd love hugging trees HOWEVER I am still standing by my original statement. Water on Mars, I'm not going to shit a brick lol even if a CENTIPEDE is found, it leaves no significance to ourselves nor does it justify the money nasa receives. |

"Give a shit. We've known there's been ice there for quite some time."
Actually, no. Not yet anyway. There appear to be salt deposits in a pattern that indicates that there might be ice which might be deep in the ground. Possibly. Or not.
And NASA do face a little bit of a conundrum. Their rules would not allow them to put a lander near any possible water source because they could not rule out infecting it.
Star Trek, eat your heart out. |

Under the new budget, NASA would receive a total of $18 billion. That's $364 million more than last year. NASA requested $500 million less than that, but it will surely be happy to take the extra cash.
That's unbelievably ridiculous. |

$18 billion is not that much money for the range of research that NASA undertakes. It is approximately .5% of the federal budget, which is tiny compared to a lot of other, less worthy pursuits.
The amount of work and research NASA does on that $18 billion is staggering. |

"it does my head in when people cant see a discovery as something 'useful'...therein itself showing human selfishness and arrogance that we are the center of the fucking universe.
to me, its an amazing prospect...regardless of how it 'affects' us.
I understand we are not the centre, Uranus is not the centre either, it's a good find HOWEVER life on Mars or any other planet.. will not significantly change humanities path here on earth!
Tell that to the millions people around the world who have for ages wanted to know..
tyhe fact that finding life elsewhere will help us think about our paths OFF earth whyen the need may arise..the earth will be here for a long time..not forever.Seeing where our next stepping stones are IS the human path.
There's no way on this earth any of us Inc future generations are going to travel the stars and like happily ever after. Let's put the 18b into green tax.
solar panels will save the planet from EDA's...aye..ok..
any evidence we cannot be a space faring race at all?- I take it you cant look 200 years into the future?..how about looking 200 years into our past...and say the same thing...
Actually I think...... GETTING READY FOR A BOW HERE HAHA solar power is obviously the way forward with energy, I. E. Planes etc etc etc obviously a long way off yet, the sun will die I know however let's look at taping into different energy sources and preserving life here on earth. Booosh! It's a bit more realistic then jumping on a craft saying beam me up Scotty. The past does indicate we have been visited before but that doesn't automatically mean we will be visitors to others!
The sun turning supernova pretty much ends everything in the solar system."
And that's OBVIOUSLY as nature intended. We go with the earth to. We don't go and fester on Mars and swim in the lakes with the 6 headed dolphins whilst singing somewhere over the rainbow whilst looking for our new faith. |

so the sun dies...and u think everything will be grand for the earth?..read up on what the sun is to become after it dies...that sorta has an affect on the solar system.....................
I know earth will no longer be here but your talking thousands of years away, I think it's important to focus on the here and now."
lol billions of years.
Our knowledge now will help us in the future...this is a reason why we have agencies like nasa exploring off world possibilities.
In your opinion we should sit like sitting ducks and concentrate on the planet itself...bit bizarre to not think both things are important..regardless of the timescales... |

You should Google the Rockwell Integrated Space Plan.
Someone already thought of a way from *is* to *ought*.
We're a little behind, but there's a plan just there.

"Give a shit. We've known there's been ice there for quite some time.
You seem underwhelmed.
Liquid water could point to there being life. Life means we're not alone (although any reasonable mind knows that already)."
I always thought that humans were conceited in believing that just because we need water to survive, alien life forms would too.
Aliens have probably staring and laughing at us for decades!!! |

When the time comes and we find life in the smallest form BECAUSE it will be, higher intellegence would of made themselves known, just to say stay away. Then come back to me and say jeeeez... so life has really changed since we found freddy the catapillar on Mars. There is no intellegence near us what so ever, it will take millions of years of evolution to find it. If we ever do. |

No one would of believed in last years that NASA spent billions of pounds to find water on mars, few men even considered that life existed on that remote forbidden planet. Da da da oo lah ?? what a waste of resources, wankers

"FFS, NASA have found possible salt deposits. Little green men and the death of the sun etc may be a little way off yet."
No no no your missing the point. Nasas mission is to ponder and find little Freddie the catapilar on Mars. My point being if and when we find freddy, how will this enrich or change our lifes. We know life can be supported out there its impossible not to however right now in this day and age with humungus amounts of money being ploughed into research how will it be beneficial to us. It wouldn't. Nothing will change. |

"So narrow minded...
If the human race had this mindset we'd still be in the Stone Age.
Advancement through science, whether it's astronomy, physics, biology are the reason we're were we are today.
I agree that finding a centipede on Mars wouldn't change day to day life on Earth very much, but it would be one of the biggest scientific discoveries of all time. |

Just to point out that the predicted time of reaching singularity is going to be pretty soon, most guesses are within the next 30 years or so.
So the theory of sending tech to another planet to start colonisation doesn't seem too far fetched.
