Chevy Volt.

It costs me less than £1.50 to drive 50 miles - assuming I can't charge when I'm out and about (e.g. there's a free charger in one of the multi-storey car parks near Swindon Swingers). If needed, I can get a reasonable mileage out of the petrol tank too, but the low costs of driving on electricity are a no-brainer, and nothing is smooth like an electric drive train.

Usually lugging a sodding great trailer around with tractors in various states of (dis)repair, loads of firewood, scrap metal and the like so need something with that capability. Mazda6 TD Sport hatch. Bought new, 10 years ago and has been super-reliable.

Good security, low insurance, sporty handling, practical and roomy, Bose audio (15" sub was a nice surprise).

Piggin' pricey to service though - just been quoted a grand, by main dealer.

Liked the shape then and still do, after a decade of driving it.

A ten year old Saab 95

Bought for £2,000 just over 12 months ago

I wanted a car I could buy without a loan or a lease, that had low miles and plenty of life left in it that wasn't a small car but wasn't too big either.

It had 48,000 miles on the clock, verified & genuine, was in pretty mint condition and had full documented history.

It has served me well and sailed through its MOT in July.

All it has cost me is 4 new tyres and I had an issue with a fuel line which was resolved pretty easily.

So musn't grumble.

"A ten year old Saab 95

Bought for £2,000 just over 12 months ago

I wanted a car I could buy without a loan or a lease, that had low miles and plenty of life left in it that wasn't a small car but wasn't too big either.

It had 48,000 miles on the clock, verified & genuine, was in pretty mint condition and had full documented history.

It has served me well and sailed through its MOT in July.

All it has cost me is 4 new tyres and I had an issue with a fuel line which was resolved pretty easily.

So musn't grumble.

Diesel?"

No it's a 2 litre petrol

Everyone told me I was mad to buy a Saab, but I found a local specialist who is no more expensive than the others who has been able to knowledgeably answer all my questions and sorted out the odd bits I needed, like when some twat nicked my badges and when the car wash busted the wing mirror ...

Oh I did initially have an issue with the engine management.

The Saab guy sorted it in 15 minutes and the guy I bought it off stumped up so to that one too.

Saab's are amongst my favourite cars. I asked if it was a diesel because the 1.9TDI is actually a variant of the Alfa JTDm engine and I could have given you a few pointers and places to get good parts.

I've wanted a 2006 Mercedes Clk AMG 320cdi for a wile now. Have been looking for over a year to find one that im happy with for my price range. Still not found one as like my women I'm too fussy.

Currently driving a smart fortwo diesel. Gets me to work and back, cheap to run, cheap to service, cheap to insure and tax. Cute looking car too and prevents me from speeding.

All in all great car. Mercedes-Benz engine and design

Having a magic flying carpet is pretty good, as it beats traffic, comes with its' own Turkish Delight and is generally too far off the ground for a warden to put a ticket on. One of the few downsides is at traffic lights, if a squeegee merchant chucks a load of water on the windscreen. It hasn't got one and I cop the lot.

New Golf diesel. Good price, great fuel economy - if I can believe the readouts, based on falsified emissions test results - and it moves pretty fast.

I love getting away snappily, my golf has good handling and the automatic driving capability, where its sensors adjust the speed, based on what others are doing, is really handy. Lovely to snooze with, whilst driving Brum to London etc.

The Prius is far from eco-hippy.

If you knew the damage those things do to the planet during the production process you'd probably rethink your stance.

Current figures suggest that before a Prius (and most other hybrids or electric cars) has even turned a wheel on the road they've caused more pollution than a 50yr old V8 has in it's entire lifetime.

That's why on the occasional day I take my S-Type into work I always park it next to the charging point that the company has provided for electric cars. Partly for childish reasons just to wind them up when I fire up that lovely V6 and also because a well maintained older car that is kept going for many more years through recycled spare parts is doing less damage.
