Who's best? Had a flat battery today called out the RAC came within 45 minutes checked the battery and told me I'm going to need a new one, checked the oil and said I'm running low and his got both in his van.....£110 for a battery and £14 a litre of oil thank God I wasn't in the middle of nowhere and I could get a 5 litre oil for £30. Who's the best breakdown association?

Last time I had a breakdown they put me in padded room and fed me soup for a month. Am I with the wrong breakdown association?

Fuckers didn't check my oil either!

Buy a Honda

Remove the problem of breaking down and therefore no problem and no need for cover

Lot of Volkswagen going cheap at the moment.

I've had Green Flag, AA and RAC. The AA consistently had really slow response times - I left them, determined never to give them my custom again. RAC have been great and Green Flag, who I think use independents, were OK too.

Overall, you can usually get a large amount of money given back to you if you purchase RAC or AA via a web cashback site such as quido or topcashback. It can easily cut the cost in half. Always choose the right produce and provider based on their service and price, not based upon cashback that you may get: something might prevent it, such as a tech issue.

Happy to answer any questions about cashback sites. Quite a few of us on Fab use them, so others may add stuff in too. I've had nearly £2000 cash paid to my bank account by these 2 sites, just from stuff that I was going to purchase anyway, so it's a great bonus. Ignore this, and just focus on RAC etc if that's interesting only.

The only drawback to a flying carpet is when I forget that I've tied it to a lamp post and set off. The damn thing unravels and the first I know of it is when I'm in free fall

When I phoned the RAC they tried to make out there was an exclusion against magical flying carpets that come from Persia. Something to do with foreign parts.

Currently AA I think, the most important thing for me is who will do the most too fix my car on the side of the road rather than just tow me to a garage. RAC used to be great but have fallen a long way imo. Last time i used the AA they took me too a garage negotiated a trade price for the part then fitted it themselves in the street for nothing!

I'm happy to admit that not all of my vehicles have been in tip top condition, new or that reliable. I've even had to call out for having run out of fuel - I'm that slack! My poorest experience was AA, though I have been towed from Blackpool to Birmingham by them: albeit in several stages, taking many hours. My main complaint about AA was having several waits of many hours for them to arrive.

I'm with the AA. I've never had to call them out so can't comment on their response time but I pay a couple of quid each month and only have to pay £35 for any repairs up to £500. Far better than paying an extortionate amount for a battery.

Personally though, if I were you, I'd have just had them tow me home and then ordered a battery from carparts4less. It would have only cost about £80 for a top of the range Bosch or Exide.

You can currently get RAC coverage with Tesco Points. They are worth 4x the amount, so I think it's about £35 worth of Vouchers for a year's cover for both of us.

RAC once rescued me at 11pm on a Saturday, took the car to an independent garage nearby, and got it fixed so we could finish our journey. I wasn't even the driver, just a passenger - the driver's (work) coverage only allowed the AA to take the car to a DEALERSHIP and do nothing else (at 11pm on a Sat, and we were about an hour from home). Helpful.

I know I should keep a eye on oil levels but it just annoyed me that the RAC would charge £14 a litre of oil knowing if you were stuck far out you would have no choice. I've just had to buy a battery £42.50 with 3 years garantee! Compared to the RAC £110 also with 3 years garantee. Reminded me of a time I was walking in the market and it started raining went to buy a umbrella and the price suddenly rose up.
