Yes ...and then rolled back to 8.1 ( its an option)
Its great if you have windows 7 but windows 8 and 8.1 pro are better IMHO
Some of the software hasnt caught up yet so waiting 12 months or so. |

I'm not really a PC savvy person but I recently got the free upgrade from 8.1 and, to be honest, I prefer it to that. The best one was 7 in my limited experience though and I often use my daughters 7 desktop instead when I'm really busy |

You guys are just domestic users yes?
There's no need to upgrade - the only thing different is a new user interface - not like some punters using their laptop/ pc for games etc are gonna notice any difference in the operating system.

Yeah, kind of just domestic users, but we do have a 2012R2 Server with 8.75tb storage as well as an ESXi server running our UTM/Firewall a second 2012R2 Server and a couple of linux instances and an instance of OS X.
Media PC is a Brix running Plex and also attached to a USB DVB-S2 car controlling a 1.1m motorised satellite dish. We have a couple of Chromecasts to stream media to our TV's too |

"Not yet. Is it really free or a demo version? It sais download for free on my updates lol." Its free at The moment after 12 months or less it Won,t be heard someone say on here it Will cost a £100 then so you won,t be able to upgrade from 7 unless you pay Before the next windows upgrade from 10 I hope windows don,t keep up upgradeing To quickly like chrome does up dateing Its browser.. If windows were "not" going to charge for 10 up grade I would stay with 7 full stop Its all about just Getting you to change across, I hope They leave 10 alone now and leave things as long as possible as they did With 7 otherwise for me windows won,t Be the same, they are forever downloading files I suppose at the end Of the day something had to give. |

The OS might appear to be 'free' atm but I heard they will charge for updates - like a service contract.
Also with MS signing lucrative deals with various big-league advertisers, to track your habits and shove targeted crap down your throats at every opportunity, I'll be skipping it, thanks. |

I got windows 8 and happy with it as well, plus its to much work to roll back the changes if you download version 10 tho. |

We just installed it. ( After about 2 weeks of trying. An upgrade from 7 pro.) It was a pain to install but we finally come up with a work around. ( Changing a partition size.) Other than that it hasn't been to bad. It installed flawlessly on our 2 in 1. |

yeah its yearly updates that has to be paid for thats if you want them
I use the free sites out there for music and free films and series to watch so when windows 10 has finished informing on what you are doing uk is already blocking loads of sites to make you pay at pay per view
I also like whats on my hard drive to stay on my hard drive and not to microsofts systems
windows 10 is worse than vista for reporting you to the bigger companys for there payment for there software being used on your system otherwise you cant use it when windows 10 blocks it
must admit considering swapping to linux myself before id install windows 10 on any of my machines |

There have been a few threads on installing 10 since launch day.
I've gone from 7 pro to 10 pro and it was fast and easy. No problems though unsure where my Office 2013 has gone - but a simple thing to sort out.
It seems faster at doing things now and everything new I've installed has been perfect.
I left it upgrading whilst I popped out - the whole thing maybe took 15 minutes of my tme and lack of PC access.
During the month from installation you can revert to your 7 or 8 machine as it was, if you want. During the first year you can go back to 10 again for free. |

It's free Shag, for you until July next year. After that you'd have to pay, like any other person. I'm assuming you've got 7 or 8, as your PC is saying you have it. It remains free to use forever, not just until July 2016 - you just need to install and activate it by then.
Once you have it, it updates itself forever. |

That's a bit worrying about your office.
I'm gonna take a stab here ( not in the old, trying to kill the beast , way! Little Eagles plug there).
When you open say, word, do you get that POp up box talking about installing then asking for the install key?
I've been getting that on my old laptop since I cleaned the registry a month ago. But I just decline, say no install - bugger off. Then word opens.
Do you still have registry entries or have they gone ? |

windows 10 updates by a paid system once a year for your updates
your updates for the system is not free but you can use windows 10 forever
unless they have done something dirty and put in a time date where windows 10 no longer works unless you pay for it |

Hi gaz,
I've blanked the windows 10, so dunno the story .
But you saying that they will be charging for their service packs?

the word on the market is that microsoft will be charging for yearly updates
these are your critical updates needed to protect your system or major mistakes during the programing of the windows operating system
the plan is for windows 10 to go more like apple
There is no such thing as a free lunch. As Microsoft transitions Windows into a service, it is beginning to charge users for more advanced or non-core features of the OS. |

He's right... 7's gonna be like XP and live for years... 10's great, but not worth updating unless you're stuck on 8.1... |

The desktop o/s releases usually go:
Good -poor- good - poor-good.
Eg - xp-vista-7-8. So on that basis . 10 should be good.
Their server o/s are usually much more consistent. Different audience and different requirements (app servers, databases, web servers etc).
Then you've got mirroring/vms.
Stick 10 on a VM and run it there. See which version you prefer.

If they start charging for updates, Microsoft will have a lot of people jump ship. They've been saying this will be their last operating system. Maybe it's because they want everyone to switch over to Linux or Macs. |
