I suspect the largest reason being players learning from the outset to respect the man in charge. I heard during an Ireland game during the six nations, many of players address the ref as 'sir'
Think that says it all |

just the way it is, used to play many yrs ago and we had some commissioned Officers and the odd Senior NCO in the team. No matter whom the ref was they were always addressed as Sir..
maybe if they had a ten minutes in the bin etc in football they may stop acting like street erberts.. |

At every level of the game you are coached as players not to talk to the ref, only the captain can talk to him. The laws of the game allow the ref to punish any dissent.
One premiership final the ref red carded the captain because he thought the swearing was directed at him.
In rugby the ref is in charge not the players. This is the case in a lot of sports not just rugby unfortunately football just does t get it |

"How come football players give the ref so mutch shit and rugby players have respect for them?
Rugby (Union) attracts a better class of participant."
I have to disagree there, there are all sorts of classes of people who play football and rugby ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Working class rugby boy here.
Its got a lot to do.how both games are taught, I love both sports.
Sadly footballers are allowed to get away with arguing with refs and children see this . Fifa doesn't back strong refs enough. In rugby we are taught we may not agree with the ref but not to say so and only the captain can talk to the ref.
As for passion , both sports are played with equal passion |

Explain how more passion for the game equates to less respect for the referee? |

"Rugby players are men and accept things most of time Footballers are men who spit out their dummies"
Rugby officials have the benefit of reviewing video footage during a game (as an example for seeing if the ball crossed the line for a try).
As a result rugby players cannot really dispute referee decisions.
Football officials do not have the benefit of reviewing video evidence during a game, so players can dispute refereeing decisions if they are convinced the officials have made a mistake (referee does not have the benefit of video footage to back up his decision). |

"It's the same with the behaviour of fans...opposing football fans can't even be allowed anywhere near each other at a match. "
That is not true about the majority of football fans, just some idiots !
I have spent many a happy time chatting with opposing football fans during my many travels to home and away games.

i worked a rugby league final at wembley and an FA cup final.
At the rugby league final you had opposing fans congratulating each other and calmly discussing the game whilst drinking vast amounts of alcohol.
At the FA cup final there were riots on the concourse and concession stands had their till nicked......now, what were we saying about class??? ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

alarge part of the problem with football is it being such a big buisness with big amounts of money riding on results and finishing positions cuasing the players to be under alot more pressure to get the result there fore tension boils over . rugby has not been a profesional sport with such large amounts of money riding on it but give it time and it will and then it will start creeping into the game |

Whilst thats true it doesn't escape the fact that footballers are overpaid and disrespectful. Well premiership ones anyway. |

I agree, watching rugby is like watching paint dry, Stop, start ( official review video evidence). Football is much more free flowing, referees and officials prefer to keep the game going without interruption. |

It is purely because rugby is a far more technical game. |

Totally agree, I watched the Leicester v Man U game in a pub in Leicester last year, got the piss ripped out of me rotten but was all in good spirits.
We also watched Man U vs Villa many years ago at Villa Park in the Villa side, got tapped on the shoulder at the end and the bloke shook my hand and said well played.
I think if you are polite and respectful to people, most will be polite back, if your an arse you usually get what you deserve. |

Managers in football always have to blame someone else rather than themselves so referees easy target
How often do you see a football manger criticise a referree for error they make but never criticises say his star forward who 1 on 1 with goalkeeper and blasts it over bar often thats real reason a football team losses (not referree decisions
As for passion having been involved with both &seen many football players come play rugby who dont show any passion or commitment to either sport

because if rugby players did what football players did to referees... they would get a 12 week ban.......![](/icons/s/wink.gif)
that and they way you are taught to respect the referee from the beginning .... so you don't see rugby players abusing refs on tv the way you do football players do.... |

if you look at the top level... the world class rugby referees are always talking to the players, and telling them what to do to keep them out of trouble and penalties.....
whereas the top level referees don't tend to do the same...
when you looks at collina when he ref'd... he didn't get nearly any of the abuse a lot of others did because he was always talking to the players.... |
