So how would you define this, I've been looking at clothes for next spring/summer when I will be at my target so won't be changing sizes. I've been looking at all the little girly pretty dresses that I will be buying to show my age I will wear some kind of covering on my arms but apart from that it's no holds barred.
I really love the shorts over thick tights look that the youngsters wear but I've never seen a woman of my age wearing that look.
On the plus side I've now got molly to buy all the really young persons clothes. Domyounwear age appropriate clothing or don't give a toss |

I tell my mum off for wearing certain shades of pink at 63.
Otherwise she dresses beautifully. She doesn't look a day over 50 though. People always say she doesn't look old enough to have a 30 year old daughter! |

I sometimes turn up at my Mum's and we're wearing the same top. She's 75 and shops in Next and the like.
I think you should wear what you darn well please. If you're lucky enough to have the figure for it then knock yourself out. I know what it's like to lose a lot of weight and suddenly you can wear things that you probably wouldn't have dreamt of wearing before.
I'm sure there are things that are maybe too young, I don't think I'd wander out in a crop top and a belt but I think if you feel good and you're happy then that's what's important. |

I've never understood what that phrase means really. I know it means older women wearing what younger women wear but i look at fashion and it's all what old women would wear anyway. Cardis, floral stuff, etc.
Tights with a short/mini skirt would look good on any age. A-line maybe more approrpiate for older people, but i wear tight ones.
Wear what you feel comfy in really. |

I dress for comfort. Wouldn't be seen dead in trainers or track suits. I do like a cotton hoody in winter to keep my neck and head warm though,I lose scarves. I wouldn't wear anything aimed at under 30s. |

My every day attire is usually jeans and T shirt and no make up, and no one believes me that Im in my mid 50's, more like 40, its actually quite annoying! lol mind you, when I get to 70 I guess it could be useful. So I say wear what you feel comfortable in regardless of age. Have fun with the new clothes OP, enjoy |

For summer I found cotton dresses , above the knee but not tight fitting worked well , I also have lost weight and don't know what looks right on me .
Also cargo pants , black ones can be worn with flats and heels too
Also I got well into the floaty trousers and a top |

I've never followed fashion, never worried about what other people think about how I dress.
I've dressed for comfort and in things that make me think I look nice.
I think it has nothing to do with age but how you carry it off. It's about attitude, confidence and how good it makes you feel |

I always wear shorts over tights! Denim high waisted shorts over black tights with dr martens, t shirt, long sleeve crop top or jumper can't go wrong! |

I hate this expression! I think our views of what's "acceptable" for different ages to wear really evolve and change over time. I think most people have an idea about what looks good on them, and what they feel good in, and they should trust that.
My mam is 60 and she rocks the short dress and opaque tights look far better than me because she has cracking legs. |

I think you look fantastic and well done for losing so much weight, that's a fantastic achievement. However, its stones you've lost not years, so I would tend to go with what maybe 35 upwards would wear. Young fashion only looks good on the young. Nice skirts, skinny jeans, tunics, dresses all look fantastic on someone with your figure, try not to mistake of losing the fat years, influence what you wear in your skinny years if you know what I mean.
most of all though have fun and knock em dead, you look great!! |

I have always had a rather quirky dress sense and I have always worn what I wanted. I've been teased, named called and talked about behind my back, all because I don't follow supposed 'rules' with dressing.
I like colour, I don't ever match clothes, I have never ever matched shoes and handbag, I'm not that type. I like embellishment, I wear a lot of accessories, I like face jewels, hats, unusual shoes. I embellish a lot of clothes because they aren't quite what I'm looking for, it's lucky I'm an ok seamstress.
Age appropriate is not a statement that has ever entered my head when shopping. I have been this way since a child, I'm unlikely to change and start shopping in M&S |

A lot of old bollocks if you ask me. At no point will I ever be wearing a pair of beige elasticated waist trousers and a cardie........ I wear short skirts and tights with biker boots. Short body con type dresses. I even wear shorts.... Out.....in public! Oooooh the shame!
I have leather trousers. A leather skirt and loads of club wear I suspect was never meant for me.
I love it. I think I look great and if anyone else thinks different ... Well I don't care.
My saviour..... Sally Hansen leg makeup. Unless I have trousers or tights I don't go out without it.
Wear what you like. The only only rule at this age (unless its cheap and nasty for clubbing) is don't go cheap and nasty. Invest in great pieces and wear them well.... Oh and a great bra!!!!
Enjoy! |

Diamond you've done amazing over the last 5 or so years. And fashion has changed a lot whilst we've been bigger. Plus 14 is now a plus size
My golden rules are:-
Just because it's made in your size, doesn't mean you should wear it.
Can I wear this with something, I already own.
Is this a little to mutton dressed as mutton.!
Do I like it?, Do i like the way it makes me feel?, or look? All three is an uber bonus.
And finally would I think someone looked like a twat, if I saw them dressed like this?
And that's my golden rules....everything else is irrelevant.
Oh oh oh but, Some are just plain...I know this would piss my mother off .she'd still like me to be in Clarks t-bar shoes.
P.S. The shorts and tights are possibly a no no...maybe swap the shorts for a denim or cord skirt.

Nice skirts, skinny jeans, tunics, dresses all look fantastic on someone with your figure, try not to mistake of losing the fat years, influence what you wear in your skinny years if you know what I mean.
most of all though have fun and knock em dead, you look great!! thanks I'm realising from this thread I am wearing the right stuff, its the summer stuff I'm having difficulty in, but in 50 years apart from when I was a teenager I've taken any joy in clothes, I'm loving it"
knee length shorts and culottes with nice tanned legs look good. denim skirts look good on all ages if worn with the right shoes etc. have a look on the 50 plus website and youll get loads of ides for summer wear, things that hide the wobbly bits and camouflage the arms are good too. whatever you choose to wear, do it with confidence and keep in mind how hard you worked to get here. well done again!! |

"So how would you define this, I've been looking at clothes for next spring/summer when I will be at my target so won't be changing sizes.
Domyounwear age appropriate clothing or don't give a toss"
I haven't read the rest of the answers but I think older women wearing really current clothes look absolutely fantastic. I try to wear what suits me with current trends in mind so shorts and tights is out because I would look rubbish but otherwise I only take my age into account if it's really tight and really short |

Tights with a short/mini skirt would look good on any age.
So not true.
More like doesn't look good on any age.
If it's cold enough to wear tights why are you wearing shorts? ..is what I think."
That doesn't make sense. That's like saying you can't wear a short skirt or dress and tights. |

Also I never hide my arms.I honestly am not ashamed of growing older and I think all this stuff we're told about hiding our necks, concealing our arms etc in case horror of all horrors, anyone should realise we're no longer 30 is rubbish and just tries to keep older women invisible.
I wear a bikini, I wear scrappy tops and dresses, low cut tops etc and so far nobody died |

if you're covering them for you that's ok by me.
I love clothes and the thought of dressing for my age and all the associated connotations is abhorrent |

I hate this expression, and I hate the concept of 'age appropriate clothing' as it is mainly a tool to belittle and stigmatise females of all ages. For 17 years I have enjoyed an outrageous and eclectic range of clothing that plenty of people have objected to openly - strangers and people close to me, and I don't give a fuck. I love my flowery clown trousers, my grandads cardigan, my oversized fake fur coats and my insane shoe collection. Wear things you like, it feels great. |

Mutton dressed as lamb - how is it not appropriate? Sorry if it's too deep " it wasn't the mutton dressed as lamb comment it was the comment referring to age appropriate clothing and how it belittles and stigmatises women.
Imwont be replying to you anyway, its been a lighthearted thread and all comments like yours do is make me think feminists get more and more bizzare by the day

Went shopping yesterday, bought three mini skirts and a jumper, 1 was wooly fairisle two where what are apparently called college skirts.
Such a chore though when you take them in the changing room and then have go swap them for size 12s so will be worn with patterned tights and boots |

I wonder sometimes about my dress sense as I don't know anyone my age who dresses like I do- even daily... But life is too short for boring clothes and I enjoy my clothes... I like emphasising my best bits and feeling good...
I don't really feel I can do it any other way, and I do get plenty of random compliments even though I would say I dress in clothes not designed with my age in mind....
Sod it, I'm enjoying myself.. Life is short!
Now where's my leather mini skirt for book club?
(I kid you not!) |
