Guys and gals can you help me out please? I've got a Fiat and just had an hours journey so engine was hot. No idea if that's relevant or not
Just noticed I've got water appears to be water dripping from the rear corner of the car by the rear tyre. Any ideas what it could be? |

Dab it with your finger and sniff it. At that end of the car could well be fuel so you could have a damaged tank, pipe or something simple like a blocked fuel filter. I'd work out what the liquid is first though |

Ok fook me I think we have a problem Huston!
It's water for sure. I Just couldnt work our where it's coming from and now I know. The brake light has about 3 inches of water in it and condensation higher up in the whole light section. Fuck fuck fuck.
It's literally just had mot too. Isn't that dangerous? How the hell has that happened? |

At a guess you'll probably have to remove that light cluster and tip it up so that the water can get out. As for how it got in there, have you had any driving rain where you are recently? Maybe your car was simply parked at the wrong angle to driving rain and it got in like that. |

As for the OP. Water in light clusters is very common on lots of cars. It's often caused by stones damaging the lenses. Pop the cluster out and use some clear silicone sealant. |

Ignore the critics too. Most people don't realise that their Vauxhall's are actually Fiat's and some Ford's have Fiat engines.
Fiat is the world's biggest car company and build some very good cars. |

I'd also use water dispersant on any electrical connectors that have water ingress then splodge some silicone grease into them for good measure too |

Good point. Servisol Super 10 is about the best stuff to use. Don't use WD40 as it can damage the plastic bulb holder |

Have you put it through a car wash or worse a jet wash?
As long as it is below the power connections the lights would work as normal so no worries on the MOT side, as already said take the light cluster off and empty it, look for any misplaced rubber gaskets.

Nothing wrong with using a jet wash unless you're using it 2 inches away from the bodywork and keeping it in the same position for ages. The problem can arise from certain chemicals used by hand car washes, TFR being the main culprit. If it's poorly mixed it can destroy rubber seals and wreck the clear coat on your paint.
I own a bespoke vehicle detailing business and I wouldn't use the stuff in a million years. That's also why I charge more than £5... |

It's only a bit of ribbing. Much respect to you for rebuilding those Mini's.
My daughter is currently training to be a motor mechanic. Because it's such a male orientated world she set out to beat all the lads on her course. 6 days in and she's already changing head gaskets and top of her class while the lads are all still trying to figure out how to change brake pads.
This, in part, May have partly been down to me, she's worked on cars with me her entire life.

All makes have quirks but if they're maintained properly most never give trouble. Notice the maintained bit
I've seen a fiesta still running without ever having an oil change from new. I'm wary of changing the oil at all now. |

Yeah, regular maintenance and servicing is the key. Also spitting wear on certain parts early will save a lot of hassles (suspension bushes in the case of my Alfa as I'm sure you're aware ).
I wouldn't change the oil in that Fezzer if I were you, it has trouble written all over it... |

I do mine every 6k or every 6 months. Coolant every 12 months and grease the suspension bushes every week!... |

Well used to but when it runs out clear after 6000mi I thought it was a waste.
So just change the filter every 5k.
Toyota red coolant 3years, fully syn gear oil 25k, 4+ brake fluid every year. Nearly 200k and cold compressions 190, 185, 195, 190 psi.
Might upgrade all fluids to Motul Esters next time. Overkill but this prevents so meny problems long term |

Ester based oils are definitely a good idea. I did my gearbox oil in December when I had to change the clutch (release bearing tore itself apart). It made quite a difference if I'm honest, especially when it was cold. |

Why do people do this, you don't know what the liquid is so you stick you finger in it then sniff it."
Because you can quickly find out what it is and rule out what it isn't. There's no real harm in it unless you try drinking whatever it is. |

Splitting hairs but look under a new Corsa and eqv Fiat and you'll notice a lot of similarity. New Ford KA is a Fiat 500 in drag diwn to Fiat part numbers |

All sorted. One of the fellas at work popped out the light and emptied it. It turns out the seal was broken so used some silicon on it and it's as good as new. Thanks to all who contributed! |

Absolute rubbish! It's perfectly fine to jet wash any car unless you're a total idiot and hold the lance 2" from the bodywork. Also Fiat and Alfa Romeo were the first manufacturers to use galvanised metals in the construction of their vehicles and they're exceedingly good at it (the jokes about rusty Italian cars show just how little people know).
Like I said earlier in the thread reputations seem to stick when it comes to cars, it's not 1979 anymore and the Italians have come a very long way. The German car manufacturers could learn a thing or two from them rather than relying on an outraged reputation for reliability, covering up massive faults and producing utter crap cars.
Hopefully the impending court case against VW in the US will get the ball rolling... |

German cars dominate the market, especially the VAG cars, personally I wouldn't go near one, I've got friends/family that have owned everything from a 1.9 A3 to a Porsche 911 and every single one has had problems - mainly gearboxes but other things too, turbos and the infamous check engine lights
We can all agree that the ford KA is the king of the "rot boxes" though

The Ford KA is notorious for rotting from the fuel filler cap outwards. The 2002 Focus had its fair share of problems with rotten sills too. Ford cut corners with the quality of their metals and they suffered for it. |

ive a fiat punto - look up you tube on how to take off light covering - i did to change a light - should have a little tool in your spare wheel to undo a doobry wotsity thing - its a bit fiddly but ok - might be able to see where water is getting in and therefore let it out and seal up - just a thought |

Let's get one thing straight
The fiat rot box was a thing of the '70s
Fiat sold Russia the tooling plant for the 124 to them (which we know as the Lada)
They couldn't make the payments and sold back "steel" as compensation
So little surprise it was inferior

Kind of o\s went about 12mth, was skint so didn't argue too much but the garage used at the time, said would be ok with just one,
I have always thought should be done as pair,
Thinking of changing the car next year though so not a huge concern
And it's fren(stop laughing)ch

Actually if my memory is correct it was the Audi 100 , I had one many moons ago!
I don't but the common myths with car manufactures either, personally I've always found the French do fantastic diesel engines but lousy petrol engines, early bm,s and Mercedes were bullet proof but expensive! Audi's were overly complicated, Italians were pretty but thoughtless (same could be said for the French) the Japanese were something peculiar utterly devoid of any "class" but built amazingly well, also built by people with very small hands, so be careful with fiddly things!
Americans were just appalling in every way and sense, truly appalling....

The German car manufacturers could learn a thing or two from them rather than relying on an outraged reputation for reliability, covering up massive faults and producing utter crap cars.
Hopefully the impending court case against VW in the US will get the ball rolling....
Actually if my memory is correct it was the Audi 100 , I had one many moons ago!
I don't but the common myths with car manufactures either, personally I've always found the French do fantastic diesel engines but lousy petrol engines, early bm,s and Mercedes were bullet proof but expensive! Audi's were overly complicated, Italians were pretty but thoughtless (same could be said for the French) the Japanese were something peculiar utterly devoid of any "class" but built amazingly well, also built by people with very small hands, so be careful with fiddly things!
Americans were just appalling in every way and sense, truly appalling....
I do have a thing for old Saab's and Citroen's which I'm seeking physiatric help for "
French diesel engines are let down by weird electrics if that makes any sense. My ex wife had a Megane 1.9 DCI which developed a weird EGR fault. It went back to Renault numerous times and they couldn't figure it out, it even had a new ECU fitted but the fault wouldn't clear. Turned out (after I traced ever wire in the main loom) that the EGR valve and the aircon pressure sensor share an earth and the aircon needed re-gassing. Did that and bit cured the EGR valve fault!
The oil breather system on those engines is also a bag of Shit and prone to blockages which can cause turbo failure. |

The light fitting is cracked somewhere and rain water..condensation is getting in. Usually they are not that hard to remove from inside the boot. Remove..see where it leaks from...use a bit of super glue to seal it...or get an eBay car parts replacement. ..usually chaep to get.. |

Absolute rubbish! It's perfectly fine to jet wash any car unless you're a total idiot and hold the lance 2" from the bodywork. Also Fiat and Alfa Romeo were the first manufacturers to use galvanised metals in the construction of their vehicles and they're exceedingly good at it (the jokes about rusty Italian cars show just how little people know).
Like I said earlier in the thread reputations seem to stick when it comes to cars, it's not 1979 anymore and the Italians have come a very long way. Your car gets overheated.First reason your radiator is blocked as you may filled it with tab water.Secondly the water pump needs to be fixed or replaced.check the condition of the liquid in ,you can see it there you add water in your car,rusty first reason if not check the pump.Good luck xx |
