Worth reading:
CONCERNS are growing over a new strain of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea after the normal drugs used to treat the disease proved ineffective.
Although the disease has so far only been found in the North of England, Public Health England (PHE) is concerned that the painful infection will reach epidemic proportions because it cannot be treated by azithromycin, and around 10 per cent of male patients and half of women will not realise they have it.
Fifteen cases of the drug-resistant strain have been detected by PHE so far, the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV said.
The outbreak, which was first detected in Leeds in March, has spread - with cases reported in patients from Macclesfield, Oldham and Scunthorpe.
