We got our dachshund at 8 weeks old. He's just over a year old now
Tips wise.
Start training early and little and often is the best way
Toilet training - we've managed to house break a dachshund which are rated one of the most difficult breeds to do so, we used training pads by the door at first, he refused point blank to go out in the rain when he was young.
When walking him if you can practice on the lead and off the lead. 95% of the time our dog walks off the lead, even though all the rule books say be cautious with hounds off the lead - we started him at 12 weeks so it's all he's ever really known.
Rule number 1 for me - SOCIALISE!
These are the exact words a dog trainer told us. Let him meet white people, black people, green people, people with glasses, people with an Afro, bald people, big dogs, small dogs, hairy dogs, not so hairy dogs. Get to the pub with your pooch early socialisation saves tons of problems later on.
Sorry for the long post
And remember

My greyhound was the easiest puppy I've ever had, house trained really easy, never chewed anything up he was just so chilled he still is, just a great big couch potato they quite hard to get as puppies though but lovely natured dogs
The Labrador was a nightmear, chewed my house from top to bottom |

We've had our staffy from 6weeks old and she was a nightmare lol She's now 15 and wouldn't change all our years together for the world. She's loyal and soft as pudding she's our baby even at 15. |

"I think we should have a forum dog/puppy social
-Courtney
As it would be a social there'd have to be a 'no leg humping' rule.
Could be tricky!
A"
My two dogs are well behaved Ladies.
Plus plenty of humping goes on at the socials I've been to...afterwards at least

"Border Collies or Beagles, or a Heinz 57, grew up with a Border Collie, amazing dogs. "
Absolutely, had all of mine off leads within 2 months and they waited at the roadside before I was there
They could eat the hottest curry I cooked, but they would always spit the mushrooms out though

I was going to write a post about how lovely my 15 week old GSD puppy was earlier but then ...
He stole and ate my steak.
Noisily humped his teddy for about an hour when I had fairly polite company round.
Obviously got a bit of an upset stomach ( must have been all that delicious steak)
Proceeded to have explosive diaoreaha in my hallway which i obviously stepped in , with BARE FEET.
Oh and to top it off he spent the entire time I was trying to clean up trying to hump me ( and he is a bid dog already)
It's a good job he's cute lol |
