Noticed the sign at ASDA this evening...

From 5 October 2015 they will be charging 5p per carrier bag.

And this being the goverment have over complicated things, lol.

--------------------------------------

You must charge if you employ 250 or more full-time equivalent employees (in total and not just in retail roles). The number of full-time equivalent employees is the number of total hours contracted to work by all employees divided by the number of hours worked by a single full-time employee. A full-time staff member who worked all year counts as 1 employee. Part-time and seasonal staff, and those who did not work the full year, are counted as fractions of 1 employee.

You must charge if you:

sell goods in England

deliver goods to England

People with fewer than 250 full-time equivalent employees don’t have to charge. If your store is part of a franchise or symbol group (sharing a brand and products) you only count employees in your business. You don’t count the franchise or symbol group as a whole.

For example, if you own 10 stores in a symbol group and have more than 250 employees in total, you’ll have to charge for carrier bags. But if you’re part of a symbol group and own 2 stores with 15 employees, you don’t have to charge.

Simple solution for cheapskates.

Place every item in an individual bag every time you shop between now and then.

Simple solution for non cheapskates.

Use 'bags for life' or reusable bags.

Or take a suitcase.

The laws are stupid - there should be just a charge for the bag with no exceptions.

Been the rule here for over a year! We keep ours in the car. But the government take 20% vat on all those 5 pences just when we all were led to believe it was all going to charity eh?

This will upset people like me.....

I went to the supermarket from visiting a relative, as I fancied some beers. I bought 4 beers at £2.50 a bottle and it came to a nice round figure of £10. £10.05 would annoy me, lol. It's like you car drivers who aim to put £20 of petrol in your car and it goes to £20.05

This charge is ridiculous, we're going to start taking our Louis Vuitton carrier bags instead. They are much bigger than a plastic bag and won't snap at the slightest strain.

Bloody 5p per bag!

I have approximately 43,000 bags for life in my cupboards, boot and work desk drawers. The chances of me beginning to remember to take them to the shop are slim to none, so I suspect I'll be paying the 5ps and continuing to use the plastic bags for bins for the foreseeable future.

I carry two material bags in my handbag. I bought nice pretty ones that can take the weight if I shop at lunchtime and need to carry something home. They fold up and stash in a little pouch. I use them day in/day out. I'm just in the habit now so it doesn't worry me.

I keep bags fro life in my car boot. Took a while to get into the habit to actually take them in.

The only reason I will miss carrier bags is that I use them for bin liners sometimes.

Been in force in Wales for a couple of years now and has reduced the amount of carrier bags used drastically. Also raised a good amount for charity despite the government taking their cut. I think it's a win win!

we have had this rule here in ireland for a couple of years now , all retailers are obliged to charge us a levy on plastic bags , I have not bought one in years now , but let me tell ya , the cost is far more than the 5 p ye will be charged in the u k . Last time i checked it 47 cent here , it may well be more now . We have got in the habit of always having our own reusable bags with us when we go grocery shopping now , to avoid having to pay this bag tax .

What the public do not seem to realise is we have been charged for plastic carrier bags since the day they were first used in supermarkets.

In the 1970s supermarkets charged for bags when they replaced the old brown paper bags.

However shoppers stopped shopping at the ones that charged and visited the supermarkets that did not charge.

So the supermarkets simply added the cost of buying the bags over the range of goods they sold and did not charge for the individual bag.

Now naive shoppers think they are getting free bags when in reality they are paying for them.

In Scotland the shopper pays twice for their bags once to the supermarket as above and once due to the SNP putting a levy on the bags.

England follows suit next month

this is all a con claiming it takes 100 years for a plastic ban on landfill to decompose. out of principal i wont pay 5p for a bag that costs less than 1p

l use those plastic asda bags to line my bin under the sink and yes l suppose they do end up in landfill.

ok so now l will have to go to the shelf and buy black plastic bags to put rubbish in.............. guess where they will end up ......landfill. only difference is now im conned into paying for the bag

I think it's 15c for a plastic bag now.

On the litter side of this this charge does work, you'd almost never see a random plastic bag floating in the wind anymore, more likely to be filled with rubbish and fly tipped on the roadside
