Do you recline your seat on a flight?
Jump to: Newest in thread
No, especially not on a typical "economy"-type flight where you already have very little space as it is.
If the person in front does it and they haven't asked and it is intruding on my space uncomfortably, I will ask them once politely to return their seat into an upright position.
If they don't, I will kick and shove the seat forward as many times as I have to. |

Totally agree . There is nothing more selfish and rude to recline your seat on a short haul flight. It is unnecessary. Ideally they should be fixed. |

"They only go back about 4 inches, I really don't know why folks get so bent outta shape about the people in front doing it, never found it impinges on my personal space that much."
Cos it forces your tray forward and cramps the space you've paid for. |

If you've got long legs and you're already squashed in, that 4 inches makes a difference. |

I saw an ignorant prat on a flight put his seat back while behind a lady had an infant on her lap.
She was almost pinned in with a screaming child and all he done throughout the flight was look back and shake his head.
Fair enough he had paid for his seat but if he had been slightly decent sort of bloke he could if helped out!
Did manage to whack his ankle with my case.. accidently of course |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I only ever recline the seat if everyone else along the length has. It's the only way it works.
I'm short and if I feel my space has disappeared with a reclined seat then it must be even worse for the tall people.

Always turn left when we go long haul darling. Seat reclining is never an issue.
Going Short haul noticed most planes have stopped their seats from reclining. 1 or so inches of recline never really helped my gangly body anyway. The ones in front were welcome to try and recline but knees normally said no unfortunately. |

Then the only person who's being rude in that situation would be you though. The seats go back. They've paid their money just as you have so why shouldn't they recline if the option is available? I'm not sure anyone has ever asked me if I mind first... what would you say? No please don't?
I'd get more bent out of shape by someone kicking my chair from behind. I'm not a recliner but it really doesn't warrant bad behaviour. |

"I'm 6' 1" and still manage to get comfortable, even with the seat back in front of me. "
You must be flying better airlines than me, I can never get comfortable and I'm 5'10". |

Chatting to a guy carrying a cello case thru an airport a few years ago, I asked
"You have to book a seat for something that big, right?"
"Yeah"
"You ever argue over who gets the window seat?"
He did not see the funny side of it at all and just went
"It has to be in the window seat so I'm not trapped behind it if the plane has to be evacuated"
Don't think he even realized it was a joke. |

"So.... when you go on your holidays.... do you recline your seat back on the flight? And do you get annoyed if someone in front does it to you?? " . No . I never recline seats . One of the advantages of flying with Ryan Air is that the seats are fixed .. It annoys when when I lose space because someone in front has reclined their seat. Luckily when I fly with BA to Belfast Iam able to choose a front seat so the problem does not arise.

The last flight I was on I watched two grown women argue (very loudly) about this exact thing.
I kinda understood both points of _iew the first woman paid for her flight and was well within her rights to recline her seat. But the other women had her lap tray down and due to the sudden recline ended up with a cup of tea on her lap.
The stewardesses were called and they agreed with the first one (who had reclined) and just said the other one had that same right.
I personally would never do it, if I had to for whatever reason I would at least speak to the person behind me first.

I had my legs crossed and some guy reclined his seat and completly trapped my leg and ankle, it bloody hurt, I asked if he would move it to let me move my legs first and he said no
So I had to call the attendant to get him to move it, ignorant twat.
I hate them, but as someone said there there to be used, but I would prefer to see seats that didn't recline. |

I wish they would make all seats fixed in cattle class. I suffered a really annoying passenger in front of me on a long haul flight who felt the need to raise an lower their seat repeatedly throughout an 11 hour flight. They continued to do so without any warning even after I had requested that they let me know after the second time they did so they mashed the seat back into the surface of my reconstructed kneecap. Thankfully I was still on prescription strength codine at the time as I desperately needed it for that one. |

It's not always intentional. If your legs are already crushed up against the back of the seat and it then gets reclined, any movement you make is gonna be felt by the person in front, I just don't make any attempt to hide it if I have asked them not to. If it is in my personal space, it is only natural that I am going to knock it with my hips when I stand or kick the seat when I move my legs.
And yes, someone has asked me before and I have thanked them for asking and asked them not to recline the seat.
(I'm not actually talking to you, but) If you're going to be a dick , so am I.
You've chosen to recline, I haven't chosen the length of my legs. |

Fair enough. The airlines are at fault really... if they took just one row out everyone would have an extra cm and that would probably be enough. |

If you have your own bed or sleep area, it's madness not to. Crew will make your seat into a bed in first class and it affects nobody.
Generally if your behaviour is going to affect others then it's appropriate to check with them or let them know what you are about to do. |

Travel business class and there is no issue....
In the economy cabin I recline my seat but always check what the person behind me is doing 1st. I don't recline fully or during meal service. |

You would have no right whatsoever to do that. The recline control is empowered to them and not to you. |

Haha personal space, if the seat moves into the space, the space belonged to me as I booked the ticket for the seat occupying that space.
I'm 6ft2 with long legs, if I can deal, you can deal. If you can deal, you need a bigger seat or even 2.

If it's a short haul flight then no as the seats are closer together and there's not much room as it is. Long haul is a different matter as I'm there for 8 hours plus and the seat pitches are larger.

Whilst I agree that throwing your seat back into recline regardless of others behind you is rude I think your behaviour is totally unnecessary & worse.
that action would make me want to put my seat upright then recline then upright then recline.....
Two wrongs & all that. |

If their seat was already up against my legs and they then recline, they're going to feel every movement I make anyway.
I'm just going to move a lot more, get up to pee/walk a lot more and conveniently "forget" things I left in the overhead baggage compartment. |

I'm sure cabin crew try and enforce passengers having their seats upright during meal services anyway (as the tray doesn't sit right if the seat infront is reclined).
Maybe that's where my hatred of it started, as I had someone throw their seat back unexpectedly on my first ever flight and ended up with a scalding cup of tea in my lap.
The sooner they remove the option altogether on short haul flights, the better. |

I rarely sleep on a plane and that's pretty much the only time I would recline a seat. I agree that not checking with the person behind is cuntish. The main niggles are the rate that they do it, some folks think it's OK to slam it backwards. It also tends to bugger up watching the screen (I'm 6'1"). For some reason the manufacturers don't allow the screens to pivot the same amount.
My biggest bugbear though are the twas getting into and out of their seats by gripping the top of the seat causing it to flex even further. I always use the armrest for support or leverage that way it doesn't affect the seat back. |

I'm not sure how British it is,no-one has asked me before, ever!
I do sneak mine back a little, especially if the person has done it infront of me. Why don't we all do it,then there's one less thing to moan about when we get on a plane, apart from the people at the very back |

Close but no cigar...
Tray tables are fixed to the the seat back hinge pins. Tray table operation is completely independent of seat back position |

So is it just me who ends up with the tray resting on my legs where it ends up tilted if the seat infront is reclined?
Didn't think my legs were that long but I'm starting to question it now... |

"There was the guy arrested this week for standing up and urinating between the seats in front of him. And he didn't ask first. That's worse than reclining.
Pfft. Reclining is still worse! "
Not if you're reclined and get golden showers that you didn't fancy, notwithstanding that you pre-cleared your seat for that position.
He pissed on the seats, between them and on people. Then promptly went back to sleep. |
