Do these mean anything to you?
Is the sentimental value of someone sitting down and creating something specifically for you, of a lesser, greater or equal value to a gift which has been purchased? |

Yes. I love homemade stuff. The thought that someone has put into it beats a shop bought card every day of the week.
My friend made me a packet of fruit pastels for my birthday. Black ones. He took apart several packets and made me a whole packet. Best birthday present ever.  |

Mostly. I did hear one child beg a relative for a proper shop card and present to give to her friend and not something lame and homemade. I was trying very hard not to laugh out loud.

I used to be really creative with drawing/painting/pastels, making cards/pictures for people..
then i just started making cards with a spunk splashes inside..I blame FAB! |

We get ours done by a friend. She's great at Art & Craft I tell her how I want it and she does it. She even made baby George and Charlotte a keepsake and she got a letter from Buckingham palace thanking her. I think it makes all the difference but it would be for close loved ones not everyone. |

I love knowing that someone has crafted something especially for me and have done so for others.
I've made ceramics for others that have sometimes taken many weeks, so know how much effort can be invested. They can be great memorable gifts for special occasions.
I've had things given to me that have become valuable but wouldn't dream of selling them, as they were personal gifts. Not everyone may appreciate that art but I certainly do.
It's lovely to encourage kids to do it too but not stop at childhood.
I now mostly grow plants and give them away but they're always personally cared for first and an incredibly individual gift as they reflect me and will be grown for a specific person.
Even a bunch of my flowers will be hand picked and chosen for someone, so I'd definitely say that personally crafted gifts are wonderful to give and to get. |

I love it when a child makes something for me. I wouldn't think an adult would put much love into anything hand made,most do it as a hobby or to make some money. |

My rather hyper young nephew spent hours making me a get well card, even if it were my sister's suggestion. It's the only card I still have almost 2 years after the op. |

I like hand-made stuff from kids. But from adults i get the sense from them that I don't understand the efforts that went into what they made, so I'm not appreciative enough. |

I love hand made cards and gifts just as much as I love thoughtfully chosen shop bought ones. My appreciation is for the sentiment because I know that not everybody has the time or ability to hand make things. |

Cards I do like. But I'm not really into "stuff" so if someone makes me an ornament or whatever, while I'm grateful I'm also thinking where the hell am I supposed to put this. But I feel this way about shop bought trinkets too, I'd rather spend time with people I care about instead of them buying things. Unless I don't like them, in which case I'd prefer they bought me alcohol. |

Handmade requires way more thought, time and effort, and usually money, than shop-bought.
I try to make as much functional stuff as possible. Cards, candles, cakes, bread, jam, curtains, cushions, blinds, quilts, socks, jumpers, pickles, chutneys, confectionary, balms, lotions and furniture polish! It feels.....nice to give someone something that's taken so much time and effort. And it's appreciated more.
Just because it's homemade, it doesn't mean it was cheap!
Shop-bought is the easy option.

Absolutely, I mean come on, no one is expecting a masterpiece off a little kid, but how exciting to see that little person you had a hand in creating, is now creating things themselves, and watching them gradually get better and more sophisticated over the years...I don't have kids, but when I finally do, if one of them takes a piece of paper, draws a circle, a couple of dots for eyes and a line for a mouth, and writes 'daddy' next to it, you'd better believe its going straight on the fridge, and later into my folder |

It's what a person writes in the card that means something to me. My ex husband wrote me a poem once,previous to that I'd only ever had one card from him that his sisters made him buy me. The poem made me cry. |

MHO - it should be termed "handcrafted" if there's been a lot of thought and consideration given to the the object and recipient when crafting it personally. I've always been into crafts and I can appreciate the time and thought whenever someone presents me with their work of art and I can honestly say they are the best gifts/cards I've received compared to some of the factory made stuff I've given as they are more personal. |
