"There are many types of Vegas weddings...it doesn't have to be in a little wooden building with only a bad Elvis for company.
Vegas can deliver any kind of wedding you want."
Oooh, challenge accepted.
Now I just have to find someone to marry. |

I don't think I'd do the Elvis wedding chapel thing, well maybe to renew my vows or something it could be fun, but as stated above, you can have some proper grand affairs in Vegas too (and everything in between!) |

I got married in Vegas, had a wonderful wedding, honeymoon & holiday with family. Not bothered if people think it's tacky it suited our needs at the time.

Nope not tacky.....and it avoided having a wedding for everyone else. We only pleased ourselves when we got married and had a fab holiday in vegas too. looking forward to going back to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. |

"do you think they are?"
No I don't really. I think too much emphasis is placed on the ceremony and not enough on the next how ever many years, as long as the people entering into the contract genuinely intend to stick with it I think the style of the ceremony is much less important than the substance. |

Exactly! I look at all these unhappily married people who had the lavish ceremony because they wanted the dream wedding and I smile a little |

I went to one very lavish wedding. The dress had cost more than my car at that time. The groom and the bride's father had a fight after the speeches and the couple had split within a month. Just enough time for her to get pregnant.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
I'm biased as I think it's a great place for a holiday, and keep proving it by going back.
Each to their own - my nightmare holiday would be a coach tour of India, but I'm sure others would love it... |

Me too and it also saved all the hassle of trying to please everyone as we did it alone. Unfortunately 7 years later it ended but I have good memories of the holiday lol!!! |

Have a fabulous time!!
I got married at the little white chapel, I was going to do a drive thru wedding but my mum insisted on us getting out of the limo, which I thought was fair enough as that was her one and only request. |

If i was to go and do it again I'd do the drive thru on harleys
There is nowhere quite like Vegas. I just remember spending the whole time walking around with gaping mouth. I really wasn't sure about it until i went. It's one place that proves having an open mind about things really does pay off. I'd love to go back. |

I married abroad, not Vegas. The thing that made it for us was the policy they had of only one wedding per day, so it was just your day no-one else's. I find queues of people waiting to be married a bit tacky but that's just me, feels a bit impersonal. Tried the whole church wedding thing once before too, hated that, didn't feel like we did it for us. |

Nothing more tacky than a hypocritical couple getting married in a church that they never intend to return to. Also, making vows in front of a god that they don't believe in etc |

A person doesn't have to return to church every Sunday or even on a regular basis, just to be a genuine believer in God! Praying and bible readings can be done anywhere a Christian person wishes because it's of our belief God isn't just inside a church!
Back to the question, no not tacky at all. I hope you have an amazing day and long happy married life |

No, I don't think a Vegas wedding is tacky. I don't think any kind of wedding is tacky if it's what people want to do. I love the judgement that assumes big/lavish wedding automatically means a shit marriage, tacky or overcompensating for something that's lacking.
Inverse snobbery at its best.
I've been to huge lavish weddings where the couple are still incredibly in love years down the line, and small weddings where they split up six months later. |

I don't think it is (this doesn't apply to me, by the way, I got married in a church but it's a church I attend regularly and I believe in God - I'm sure I can be accused of hypocrisy for many things but not that).
Caring about your family and their beliefs and wanting them to be an important part of your wedding isn't a negative thing to me. |

I know hunny as I saw that. It's just nice to give a little something back to the family who may and probably do believe in God considering they in all likelihood contributed/paid to/for the cost of the wedding. Or just nice for the believers amongst the happy couples family and friends to witness a traditional wedding. I personally find register office weddings cold ...so to speak. Others like my sister prefer them. |

If someone is vehemently, actively anti-religion fair enough. If they don't really give a shit either way, there's nothing hypocritical about doing something they know will make people they care about very happy.
I just find it a shame that people criticise each other's weddings that they've chosen to have for reasons that are important to them. That applies to a Vegas wedding, a registry office do, a big church wedding and everything in between.

Just people wanting to be seen as 'something'. Fuck knows what though.
Big lavish weddings then divorced a couple of years later while they're still paying it off. |

You're only allowed an opinion if it fits with The Forum. Free thinking is not allowed. It is actively frowned upon.

Of course everyone's allowed an opinion, even when it's different from mine (they're wrong, but it's still permitted). On this particular forum thread it seems I'm the one with the opinion that goes against the grain because I don't think having a lavish wedding automatically makes you shallow, tacky or destined for a hasty divorce.
What makes my little cheapo wedding more "valid" or genuine or non-tacky than someone who spent £50k? It isn't.
To imply it's ok for one type of wedding to be called tacky but not another; that's hypocritical. Just my opinion, of course. |

I (female) got married in Vegas at the little white wedding chapel - it was about as tacky as they come and I loved the idea - we had a drive thru wedding so went in signed all the forms and stuff and handed over our license and then went out jumped in our hire car and drove up to the drive thru window. I don't care what people think it suited us. We separated 4 years later and I'm off to Vegas again in 2 weeks, you know if my divorce had come through on time id have probably done it again. My sister got married in the UK and it cost her around £10k to please everyone with the church and he big dress and she didn't get a honeymoon either as he wedding was so expensive. When we get married we will probably do it abroad and if people want to come they can if not we will throw a party when we get back at a total cost of about £3-4,000 including honeymoon. |

We got married in a small register office ceremony because despite both sets of parents being practicing Christians we weren't and we felt it disrespectful to them to make vows in their sacred space. This was followed by a small party at my mum's house with close family and friends. It probably cost less than £1000 clothes and car included.
This doesn't mean that I think other people are wrong for choosing a ceremony and celebration that they want though, it's got nothing to do with me but I stick by my opinion that it's what comes after that's much more important. |

My sister got a big white wedding. Twice. And I think she's onto her fourth, but her last two were so small that even family weren't invited.
Extrapolate that.
There's no universal rule.

All in all I think my wedding cost £400 it wasn't what I wanted my wedding to be and looking back probably not the best ideas I've ever had was to get married... |

A wedding is what you make it, I had an *average* wedding in a register office, i would be upset if any of my family had poked their nose in telling me what they thought i should do (helping and giving advice is fine). I didn't get married for them.
My sister had two weddings, they had the "official ceremony" first to make it legal then they went and got married in the ice palace in Finland.
Mine lasted 4 years there's is still going strong after after 11.
IF I got married again which is more than highly unlikely, Id have immediate family and the most simple of things.
It's not the wedding that makes the marriage |

"I think all weddings are tacky.
More so the ones that cost thousands and take years to plan. All show. To hide the lack of something."
To clarify.
I think the ones that cost thousands BUT are all show to hide something - are tacky.
I don't think ALL expensive weddings are to hide shit relationships. Wedding cost has no correlation with shitness of relationship.
*I* think £1k is too much to spend on a wedding that is a one day event. *I* wouldn't spend that.
I don't care how much other people spend.
