50 shades of blah blah blah

Your thoughts please ladies and gents ?

My thoughts are likely the same as yours on this topic ...
But I also don't much care what people call themselves as long as it isn't insulting. I can commiserate with a lack of creativity so I tend to cut some slack. Marc.Courtney isn't exactly original

Yes you make a valid point. It is entirely their choice. You are the only Marc.Courtney on here though so still original. X |

I feel sorry for any poor fooked that is named Mr Grey for real.
I can only imagine the pretenders think it's going to impress and dupe their quarry into thinking they're some rich kid, dominating wannabe. |

"Think it's good that people are reading, and finding literature inspiring. "
I think there's finding inspiration where a person is driven to learn and to understand more about a subject then there are people who mindlessly try to recreate and imitate what they have read without deeper consideration.
There are some wonderful people who have entered the kink scene because of 50 shades who are respectful, open minded and considerate and then there are people who think they can put on a suit and a tie and order any slut to fall to her knees and suck their cock. |

There is this too. Always positives and negatives to such things I suppose. |

I think im the only person who likes those books. Yes admittedly its not the best writing and language however...
I dont think the books are really about the kink. They are about a mentally/emotionally damaged man who despite having everything isnt happy. Then along comes someone willing to be the one thing he cant.. vulnerable, she trusts him. That act wakes him up and he learns to love.
Beautiful really x |

My profile name is unimaginative, as was my original one. Could do with a new one but im not naughty enough.
I love the books, the film was a bit of a letdown but no doubt I will go and see the others. Id still like some "Mr Grey" treatment though, sometime. |

Worst book in the history of all that has ever been published. Reads like it has been written by a 14yr old trying to get a 'D' grade at GCSE (and failing)
If anyone makes any reference to this book in their profile or messages I hit instant delete - huge turn off because SERIOUSLY have you ever read any other books if you think this one is good??
There are some amazing erotic literature books on amazon with are 100x better written, 100x better story, 100x more hardcore
I didn't care for the book very much..can you tell? |

I'm not critiquing the book. Just wondering more about why the popularity with the usernames or taglines referencing it.
Would be interested to hear from profiles that do so too.
Also does it put you off a profile if its mentioned there somewhere or do you like it/ feel indifferent about it ?

I think 50 shades reached a far wider audience when compared to other literotica hence why it caused such a stir in the bdsm scene that I'm aware of.

Eh, I think that when everyone jumps on a bandwagon to criticise a book, then people will lose interest in reading due to fear of embarrassment. Reading something and enjoying it at a basic level is still okay. To the majority of people, it's just a book. |

I read the books and found they weren't that bad! Didn't like the authors writing style but the story behind it all was ok. The film on the other hand biggest load of tripe I've seen in a long time! |

Always tickles me when someone says I must be uneducated because I liked 50sog. Bet they can't read and understand Shakespeare. Bet they've never found their way through a whole Danielewski novel. But they've not read any philosophical studies. Bet they're just jumping on a bandwagon and have no concept of exactly why it's 'badly' written. |

I'm in two minds about it.
On one hand it's all a bit sad and tame isn't it!
But if it's helped lots of people find their mojo and kick start their sex lives....It's all good! |

I find it quite a shame that people would allow others to make them feel embarrassed about reading. Surely it would be better for everyone to form their own opinion. I've read the books, they didn't thrill me admittedly but they were ok for a bit of easy reading. |

I do find it amusing when people are told 'you're not doing it the true way!'. People will do kink however it suits them (providing consent is obtained, why should anyone consider if their kink suits others?).
I've only read sections of the book and it wasn't for me. The only thing that annoyed me was the surge in numbers of people attending events who had forgotten to bring along their understanding of common decency just because they were going to a sex or kink party. There were lots of people who assumed that as you're female, you're submissive and being submissive means you have to submit to anyone who calls themselves a Dom.
I have made a couple of wonderful connections through people who became curious after 50 shades and it was just the start of the journey for them. They've continued to learn because they asked questions, observed and respected what they've seen rather than waving their dick in front of anyone and everyone demanding a blow job. |

I don't think there's anything wrong with finding something exciting and wanting to explore it, after being introduced to it by a book. Everyone starts somewhere. |

"Worst book in the history of all that has ever been published.

"The only thing that annoyed me was the surge in numbers of people attending events who had forgotten to bring along their understanding of common decency just because they were going to a sex or kink party. There were lots of people who assumed that as you're female, you're submissive and being submissive means you have to submit to anyone who calls themselves a Dom."
I didn't personally find that at the events that I go to, and neither did my friends. We were kind of expecting it, and then it just didn't really happen.
But I suspect that varies between areas, clubs and individual nights at clubs. |

"Think it's good that people are reading, and finding literature inspiring.
Eh, I think that when everyone jumps on a bandwagon to criticise a book, then people will lose interest in reading due to fear of embarrassment. Reading something and enjoying it at a basic level is still okay. To the majority of people, it's just a book.
Tbh, badly written or not, it's a book. It was the first book to make a lot of people want to read in a long time. Criticising people for enjoying it is dumb.
I agree, criticising anyone's choice of reading material is dumb, doesn't stop people doing it tho, especially on here where it's historically been seen as lame if you enjoyed it.
Reading is not dumb. Trying to imitate what you've read without thought is.
I don't think there's anything wrong with finding something exciting and wanting to explore it, after being introduced to it by a book. Everyone starts somewhere. "
There is nothing wrong with learning about something and wanting to explore more. There is everything wrong with people assuming that one book represents the whole kink scene and there is everything wrong with people assuming thay because they identify as a man, they can call themselves a Dom and have the pick of the women and order them to do whatever they want.
I would love to see 50 shades featuring Ms Grey next to show that you don't have to identify as a man to be Dom but I fear it wouldn't sell as well. |

You may be right. Maybe the larger the club or the more people present, the higher the risk of bad behaviour as people feel hidden or protected within the numbers. |

"Is there an audio book of 50sog? I would imagine that would be better than reading it...just a thought"
There is and I have it on my phone but the woman who tells the story... Her voice really annoys me!!!
I liked the film personally and don't think that it was that bad. Anything that encourages people to talk and engage in thinking that there is more to sex than laying on your back with your legs in the air has only got to be a good thing in my opinion!
Back to the ops question tho... No user names don't bother me tbh. It's normally something someone thinks up on the spur of the moment when joining. And tbh there are far worse ones on here!!!! |

Maybe, although I'm a regular at a club night with a few hundred people and we've just not seen that kind of thing happening (one of my lovers organises it).
I just don't think it's been the tragic epidemic that lots of people in the kink scene thought it would be. |

It would if they called it Miss Whiplash. |

"We dont respond to anyone who makes 50 Shades references. I just assume they will be too vanilla if they get off on that shit"
Your profile hardly indicates that you would be into anything non-vanilla yourself. |

I based my alternative name Delorean Grey on the 'back to the future' car, Earl Grey and the Oscar Wilde character Dorian grey. All these inspirations predated fifty shades and I've had this persona since 2010, I've had a steampunk writer threaten me with copyright infringement because he thinks I stole his idea, when I told him I had a vistaprint invoice for name cards from 2010 he then realised that the 'intellectual property' for delorean grey is actually mine. I think my name has quite a lot of originality and has served me well lol.
51stshadeofgrey is based on the hype, but is connected to my other persona

"50 shades of blah blah blah
Why so many profiles calling themselves this or referencing it in the profile somewhere.
I'm seeing it at least 5 times a day every day.
Your thoughts please ladies and gents ?
"
I have two takes on it.
One the one hand, Grey is at the very soft porn end of the Dom/sub reality, chick lit at its worst if you like (Jilly Cooper of the new millenium?!). Ive noticed a whole load of wannabe Greys on here in the last couple of years.
But on the other hand, moving the Dom/sub scenario into the mainstream has, in my experience anyway, significantly increased the number of women who want to explore their sub side!
Clouds, silver linings and all that! |
