Hiya everyone,
I was just thinking about this, and I thought I would pose the question to the people of fab
The Ring of Gyges, for those of you not familiar with Plato, is often used by moral philosophers as a thought-experiment.
So, I would like to ask this, if you had a ring that gave you the power to be invisible at will, would you still act morally if there was never the chance that you would be caught doing bad acts? If you could, for example, steal while completely invisible, knowing you would never be caught....would you? Or would you remain moral even without the social ramifications?
As usual, I love to hear your thoughts.

i would live as i do now, with impeccability, that doesn't mean i feel i have social morality..basically it means i have to live with myself at all times...rather than with the acceptance of others...good question x |

Other than hide out in ladies changing rooms I think I would probably keep my moral compass. But I guess until actually in that position it's hard to say, I mean if you *knew* you could get away with almost anything you are likely to cede to temptation eventually, aren't you?
There's certainly a few people I wouldn't mind anonymously slapping for sure! |

I'd be single handedly responsible for a 400% increase in REPORTED crime alone never mind all the things I'd do that don't get noticed
Then with my ill gotten gains I'd make bets on sporting events and use my invisible super power to decide the out come
All my bets come in and id find some way to affect the stock market and invest to make more cash |

"I'd be the most dreadful gollumesque voyeur the world has never seen.
That sounds like it would be fun to see... "
Except you wouldn't be able to see it if he's invisible |

Yes, aside from that small moral indiscretion of hiding in ladies changing rooms |

I like this answer! Being honest with yourself, rather than others. |

I'd decline the ring, not for moral reasons, but because I'd just have to look at things I shouldn't and probably find out things I'd be better off not knowing. Ignorance can be bliss. |

I wouldnt be able to stop myself earwigging,
then I would know but not be able to act on it without giving my invisibility secret away
Quick nip into the lingerie fitting section and then break the remote I think, |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
I think I'd be a bit o an opportunist thief to start with, but then I think my character would re-assert itself, and I'd go back to being basically good.
Except for the voyeurism. That would be very very bad. |

I know for a fact i wouldn't act morally still. If i can get away with stuff now i will do that already.
I'd still have similar morals to what i have now, and i'd probably cause myself some actual harm to by using my ability too, although only me would know about it. |

I'd turn bad... Did anyone play zelda ... I think it was zelda. The game featured Cornish villagers ; if you were heroic , when you past them they'd cheer
"Ooo look at the handsome hero"
So it would give you choices how to behave, ......at the start of the game I played like any rpg ; bringer of light a true hero , but after being offered the choice to be good or evil for half the game . I thought .....
Fuck it , i killed the princess and robbed her..
Sadly I think I don't need the invisibility ;no chance of being caught....
You offer me the chance to be bad often enough ... I'll take it |

I didn't know this was actually a thing - it's something I often think/daydream about.
It's amusing because I truely like to think of myself as having way, way above average morals and integrity but there is absolutely no fucking chance in hell I wouldn't do things I know I shouldn't.

Like what? What stuff would you do that you shouldn't? What do you think you would be tempted to do, that you wouldn't do because of social norms? What stuff do you think you wouldn't do, in any case? |

The way it's been described several times, the internet is somewhat like a ring of invisibility. I reckon with this logic, I'll be fine. However, my work colleagues will disagree because I already keep sneaking up on them to make them jump |

I'd be more of a prankster probably. Hiding stuff and moving things about. I would definitely check out some theories I have about people while invisible. And I'd hide from people I didn't want to speak to |

My issue isn't social norms, mainly more legality. Put it this way - most of my transactions would be cash and every bank branch in the south would be wondering where the hell their big bundles of cash were.
There are so many things you could do to your advantage and I definitely would.
Of course, there's a few women I'd like to see naked but will never likely be able to too.
As for morality, apart from the latter, I just wouldn't want to waste an excellent opportunity to give myself an advantage I wasn't born with. |

At some point you would find out what friends/family work colleagues really think about you,
Most of it I would just except but it would probable chance the way I think |

Good question. I'd like to think I would be completely untouched by the power and not do anything I wouldn't but....
I would have to listen to conversations especially about me, yeah it could cost you friends but I can't abide liars so that would be fine. And shamelessly I totally would ahem look at some people

"Would have to have the ring to know that.
You can give it a guess based on your knowledge of yourself....."
But does anyone really know the self when it would be in possession of that kind of power? |

I would say, yes, some people do know themselves, even with this power. Some people have the ability to be completely honest with themselves. Not everyone, but still....some. And even if you don't know for sure, you can hazard an educated guess....
Not that I am saying you necessarily have to, just that some people, I think, could. |

If stealing is against my moral compass when visible then it will remain immoral if i'm invisible.
It is my own conscience that matters. Not what others allow or disallow me to do.
I would, however do lots of things that i don't do whilst visible because I don't see them as immoral but I am bound by social mores, laws , convention etc. |

This is very much how I feel as well. Although it would be interesting to see how willing we are to let ourselves "slip" if we were ever in that situation.

I'd use it for freaking people out, I'd have a friend with whom to make it look like they're telekinetic, making people jump, and being a very filthy perv. So nothing would change... Except for the telekinesis stuff, that would be sweet |

I'd probably be morally questionable
To be the fly on the wall watching and listening to everything around me, a secret voyeur
However I'd like to think that I would balance this with ask if the hood things I could do aiding those who need it, fighting off muggers and bank robbers |
