"Shame they don't raise wages to compensate..
Think everyone should be on living wage instead of minimum wage."
I'd happily pay more for coffee because of this.

So, although the amount is different, your own quote shows that the min wage is going up in Oct.
So the accusation that Costa are profiteering by increasing prices early still falls...
...however....
What's also happening is that corporation tax is being lowered to cover the cost. So, unless Costa are one of these multinationals that take part in corporate tax avoidance, the living wage increases should be cost neutral.
If they are a tax avoider then they need to maintain margin and this is a reasonably sensible way of doing it. The price increase should be less than the proportion of their cost base that is direct labour, multiplied by the proportion of their frontline employees who are below 25 multiplied by the % increase in min (in Oct) wage.

CEOs are massively overpaid, agreed.
How does the imposition of a minimum wage use up your taxes? The more companies pay their staff, the less benefits are needed to top it up.

Given that Starbucks already charge much more than Costa, I'll happily stick with my daily Costa fix, if it means the staff get a better wage.
I think you're going to see a lot of this now with all the convenience food vendors,McDonald's KFC, etc. I know that the average cost of wages for McDs is around 20-22% of gross sales, up from just 13-15% 25 years ago. Wages have risen much more than the cost of their products and something is going to have to give soon. |

Utter bullshit. Costa is a trading arm of Whitbread, so I hope you don't drink their beer, eat in their restaurants (Which include Beefeater and Brewers Faire) or use their hotels.
Whitbread have actively AVOIDED the kind of avoidance schemes employed by Starbucks and their ilk.

I'd rather pay more for the good atmosphere of a Costa, the better coffee, the better trained barristas (who can make coffee how I like it rather than out of a machine) and the nice food that's available in them.

There are an awful lot of people who are on low incomes who receive benefits to bridge the gap between their income and outgoings. If companies actually paid living wages then there would be no need for employees to claim benefits. |

Costa is one of the companies that does pay corporation tax unlike Starbucks. If you're looking to
Boycot companies look at tax avoiders like Starbucks but then you'd have to include Google and Amazon in that to, also did you know that 80% of McDonalds stag are on zero hours contracts? 80%!!! Living wage or not that's shit. In the scheme of things Costa aren't bad.
Anyone who thinks that increasing minimum and living wage won't lead to higher prices is crazy it has to, there's a chance it will lead to job losses too, I support it but it has to be done with care is all. I think it was Seattle or similar that introduced a $15 min wage and small businesses went under in droves, if you hike up min wage you have to support small business too to absorb the hit and allow for inflation to spike.
I agree with local independent coffee shops being better too |

ALL* hourly paid McDonald's staff are on Zero hours contracts.
*There maybe some individuals with exceptionally long service or in HQ functions, but they are the exception. If they are cooking, cleaning or serving then they will be on zero hours. |

I never understand why people even go to these money grabbing tax avoiding customer service lacking bland boring overpriced commercialised chain coffee branches instead of supporting their local independent shops which offer far better coffee and homemade foodstuffs such as cakes and such.

There aren't lovely independent coffee shops with brilliantly trained barristas in all towns. Shops like that tend to be an indicator of affluence in the area.
So the answer is, certainly in my case, 'because sometimes I don't want to make my own coffee and cheese toastie, so I go somewhere that they'll do it for me'. |

Would you say the artisan bakers next door selling fancy loaves of bread for £5.50 is another sign of an affluent area?
I don't think I've ever made myself a toastie in my life, that sounds frightfully middle class doesn't it.
But back on track, the price increase will be barely noticeable. Same with things in tesco (Waitrose for me thank you) I'm certain they put up prices every week and no one realises. |

Interestingly the price has remained constant over the last few months, it never went down, then we had all the furore of the last few weeks, and they put it up.
Folk round here never benefitted from the price reduction they were all raving on about. |

I didn't write my point very clearly. It's the widespread use of low wages that means that tax payers are funding such low earning employees having state benefits.
I'm all for having a minimum wage that's an appropriate living wage but less in favour of minimum wages becoming the standard wages that are paid.
Their CEO had earnings of almost 6 and a half million pounds last year, so I also guess that there's a fair bit of flexibility in there, based on their sales prices, to absorb most/if not all of the increases. I find them fairly distasteful atm. |

You will find the little coffee shops are generally on a better pay scale as they expect the staff to be the face of their brand rather than the high turnover of staff in Costa stores. |

"Hopefully they will price themselves out of the market as the coffee is substandard and little coffee shops will do better
Little coffee shops are also going to have to increase wages to their staff.
You will find the little coffee shops are generally on a better pay scale as they expect the staff to be the face of their brand rather than the high turnover of staff in Costa stores. "
At the moment i bet they don't pay anything like the living wage...
The increase in minimum wage that is coming is going to most impact small businesses.

My favourite Costa drink is blackforest hot chocolate. I don't grudge the 3.55 for it because it contains a days worth of calories. And aside from that they taste so good! Lastly the local one still serves me them despite them being on the Xmas menu. |
