Im thinking of making a HUGE decision!!

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I'm at a point in my life where I am unsure at what direction to go in and want to do something to try and help this terrible world we seem to live in.

I know some of you will think this is a wind up and probably come back with some smart arsed comments but....

I am thinking about joining the fight against Isis in Syria.

I'm looking at joining up with a group who will be aiding the Kurdish Peshmerga.

And yes I have looked into and researched this before you say it.

I'm just in a position at the minute were I can do something like this.

I obviously know the extreme dangers and risks involved, but it's something I am considering very seriously.

Does anyone have any sensible comments on my plans or has anyone thought the same?

I would be interested to read people's _iews...

Please no smart arse comments or wise cracks I'm genuinely wanting people's opinions and _iews

Thanks

Judging on your thread from the other night, I'd say you're probably not in a position to make such a huge decision.

There are other ways you can help. Most likely on your doorstep. Enquire about those. There are all sorts of heros in the world.

Personally, if I was out on a mission to sort that particular fight out, I'd want people beside me who were stable and reliable rather than having some sort of crisis and doing on a whole knee jerk reaction to try and make a difference.

Have you any relevant military or medical experience? Hell, even catering would be seen as an asset. Think about what you can bring to them, other than just being one more target.

people have always gone to fight in foreign wars and they've all had their reasons. I would say do it if you are genuinely prepared to be killed or injured in a life changing way for this cause but before you commit consider the effect on your loved ones, personally I think theirs are the opinions you should be seeking and taking note of.

Probably not helpful, but only you can know how passionately you feel about this and how much it means to you.

As you say you've thought it through, the risks and implications on family and friends.

Have you thought about the UK armed forces rather than a Kurdish group.

I didn't read your thread the other day that others are referring to so don't know the context / back story to what they're saying but I guess mental clarity is critical in such a huge decision.

In that thread, you mentioned how hard it was for you to pull yourself together when having a "bad time". That's not indicative of someone who doesn't struggle mentally. Putting yourself in a war zone will most likely push you further into a darker place.

Then again, you're an adult. Do what you fancy, just remember it was your choice.

Without meaning to sound patronising, you just sound a bit lost at the minute and I don't that is a particularly good reason to go.

You can't run away from your problems an d you should probably fight your own war first before joining another.

If you truly sympathize with the cause of Kurdish freedom in Iraq and Syria, as well as independence from Turkey, then you're best offering your support for them in a way that avoids contributing to the cycle of violence that is already out of control there.

Educate yourself of every aspect of the issue (political, cultural, geographic, strategic, social, economic, historical, etc.) in a manner that is balanced and academic in order to engage effectively and tirelessly in debate with you local MP. Persuade them to lobby for greater pressure upon Turkey to reverse Erdogan's recent policy change regarding the PKK, as well as to move the agenda of Kurdish human rights back into the sphere of mainstream political debate within the context of UK, EU, UN, ICC and NATO policy. If you really are committed to helping the Kurds, this is where your efforts will do the greatest good.

Trust me on this one.

Serious commitment. As has been said, do you have military training and experience? Because they don't have time to train you. Have you contacted any of the groups to see what they actually want? It's not just a case of turning up with a rucksack saying hi. It's not a video game, you are highly likely to get killed if you aren't experienced.

Don't do this to impress or upset someone. It's real. It's brutal. In contact situations there will be blind panic and your head will spin. You have to be clear and detached. Your comrades will fall in front of you, with the calibre of ammo used it's likely that limbs will be ripped off. Will you save a shot for yourself? If you are taken then you will be tortured in barbaric ways. Burnt alive or beheaded with a pocket knife. Imagine that. Take all that seriously and think.

The fact that you don't appear to be able to handle a discussion with a bunch of randoms on the internet and choose to throw your toys out because you don't want to hear opinions that contradict yours, would make me question your reasons and ability to be able to function successfully in a war zone.

Being in a war zone is different than being in any other situation.

I don't know you. I know next to nothing about you. However, I know people who trained for war, and I know people who fought in war. If you are not mentally prepared for it, it will ruin you. If you are not physically prepared for it, it will ruin you.

We all want to do what is right, but in order to do what is right we need to consider whether we are the right people to do it. Consider these things before making such a huge decision.

One cannot just walk into Syria. I know people who have been independent security in foreign lands and fought in horrible wars. They had years of training. You wouldn't be going in with our armed services backing,we haven't got military over there. I would think twice about joining a foreign army of fighters in a foreign country.

Aside from my previous levity, I have to say you did come across as serious and there's no doubt it's an extremely serious issue - particularly to me as I've spent many years in the region - and the Kurds do need our help in a way that is educated, constructive and non-violent. I hope you don't mind if I reiterate the following:

"If you truly sympathize with the cause of Kurdish freedom in Iraq and Syria, as well as independence from Turkey, then you're best offering your support for them in a way that avoids contributing to the cycle of violence that is already out of control there.

Trust me on this one."

Worse case scenario you get captured then executed very gruesomely.

Best scenario is you live but therefore will carry what you see out there for the rest of your life.

It's a big ask.

Then there's being accepted by friendly forces. And they don't accept just anybody. You're no good to them if you're shit. You'll need to show competence in using your weapons system, and show you can follow orders. If they even give you the chance to.

Then you've got your logistical problems to get out there. Travelling on what passport. Answering border controls questions. Why you going to Syria? Aid worker? What aid have you done before? Do you know the area? Etc etc.

Best of luck out there but you'll ultimately be on your own. My advice is fight from Iraq up. More infrastructure.

"people have always gone to fight in foreign wars and they've all had their reasons. I would say do it if you are genuinely prepared to be killed or injured in a life changing way for this cause but before you commit consider the effect on your loved ones, personally I think theirs are the opinions you should be seeking and taking note of.

Sound advice. "

OP have you had any kind of military training in this particular type of combat and theatre?

Forgive me if you have answered the question and you have I gave up the reading of the thread as it was to long.

If not then your efforts should be put to those areas that support those trained to act in such situations. I would point out that technically there is no British military involvement in Syria and by joining the organisation you identify you would become a mercenary which is not helpful to you or your family.

Your intentions are laudable but I fear you maybe letting your emotions run riot!

"Serious commitment.

At last a sensible reply thanks "

So what's your reply? Do you have military experience? At 37 you would be too old to train for front line (not talking TA or reserves now)

It did cross my mind but I generally like to give the benefit of the doubt when someone clearly needs help. I attempt to remain kind and decent and treat people the way I'd like to be treated.

I mean who'd joke about such a thing without any knowledge of other people's experiences with war. I know my friend and the trials he's had to deal with after stepping on an IUD while serving his country so that we can be safe. I've watched him push himself round since he no longer has legs to walk on but he can joke about me buying him socks for Christmas.

That's pretty funny. I'm glad he still has his sense of humour after losing so much. I'm sure he'd think you are hilarious.

Think on sunshine. You have the maturity of a school boy. Try walking a mile in a true hero's shoes before you open your mouth and let your arse do the talking.

And on that note, I wish the rest of you a pleasant day.

You are right! Fab is a break away from the norm of life and not to take things serious.

But I don't really think you've thought this through. War is serious and to joke about it; well you've probably picked the wrong site and audience.

You should be ashamed of yourself and the fact that you're still getting a buzz that people are commenting on your post is plain stupid and suggests you have mental issues.

If I was to call your jokes and actions childish, then it would really be an insult to our younger generation.

You seriously have issues and I would recommend you go and get help instead of insulting the good people who have took time to write their comments to your post.

If you're fortunate to get any further meets on here from people that are aware of the type of person you are, then I suggest that you book them in for some consultantation!

And a bit of advice: Read some of John Pilger's work and think before you speak or take action!

You might have a reason for your stupid post, but it's by no means an excuse.

"I'm at a point in my life where I am unsure at what direction to go in and want to do something to try and help this terrible world we seem to live in.

Thanks

surely you know fighting achieves nothing except death or serious injury which then causes others pain and suffering the people you are considering fight don't fight conventionally they are only interested in death and havoc ,I personally think you need help because it can't be considered a rational decision

"Scrolled down to see how long it took to be revealed as a wind up.

You need to build a faux serious persona before people are going to take such outlandish claims seriously and give you the outraged argument or heads exploding (not literally) that you crave...

Think you will see there is still people taking it serious

I'm not sure that's much of an achievement tbh.

So tell, was your thread about depression serious/true?

You there, have a search for a thread about dreams about fellow fabsters, I bumped it last night but don't think you were online.

I'll check it give me a sec

Shepperton

If you want to help go and do some first aid courses like Mira or FPOS advance raise money buy a van pack it full of clothes water medicine tents etc.

Drive there and help! Anyone can pick up a gun not many can heal.

They don't need more foreign fighters they need help and support.

Also look at the Red Cross or Red Crescent.

We should have a whip round for a one way ticket to Syria for him. Or we can buy him a boat.

I wouldn't even consider unless you were in the Army for longer than basic service and have had fairly extensive combat experience. Without it you will be a liability to those you will fight alongside and lack the most basic military skills such as keeping your weapons clean, clearing bullet jams (something you will get using the old poorly made guns), and basic field skills.

Remember for every story of someone who set off for adventure and returned with tales of daring there are 100's of bodies lying dead on the ground.

Want adventure? Head to Paris with your passport, 50 euros, 3 changes of underwear and basic toiletries and join the French Foriegn Legion

Unless your Bruce Willis or Sly Stallone your efforts will make F.A. difference and unless you're highly skilled at something you'll probably hurt the wrong people. Sometime in the next 12 -18month the main players in the UN will move on this with a momentum that many feel well over due. When they do you will understand the insignificance of any effect you may have had. If you want to join the fight become politically active petition the world players for intervention. You'll achieve more but won't get buzz you are looking for. Try reading up on those who joined in on the Spanish civil war who were driven as much by self ambition as a sense of justice. Are you looking to help or being seen to have taken part?

Right it's a sunny day I'm off for some titillation.
