I have tried to trace my family name on Ancestry UK but it didn't go far due to lack of data, I do know part of my surname was dropped by my Great grandfather (no one knows why) And due to my dad receiving money left to him in a will when he was younger a early family member moved to America,
I would love to trace them |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
1707
There are all sorts of stories that my dad has researched over the years... I once booked a holiday to Sydney a year in advance, and by the time I actually went, a distant cousin had been located two miles from my hotel.
It's a small world, sometimes. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I'm the product of slave stock and overseers. I can only go back to my great grandfather on my paternal side and my grandmother on my maternal side.
There might be records but the way they were registered was quite fluid in for my mother's generation: she and her siblings have the same two parents but three different last names!

Early 1700's on mothers side all southern Irish farmers and Tinks
Fathers side they have the family book which goes back to we think 1680'ish but that's translating what we know from Romany - the rest is gibberish even to Manchester University as no one knows what dialect it's in!
The fact they use a different calendar makes it a nightmare. |

"My great aunt has traced my dad's maternal family back to the 1600's but getting more difficult
My uncle has traced my mum's maternal family back to early 1800's so far
Both Scottish families "
1500's is about as far as my parents managed to trace. Scots maternal roots here too... (not sure how many)-greats granny used to make dynamite, for Nobel's factory up there. |

It is relatively (no pun) easy to trace back to 1837,
when BMD were recorded. Before that date becomes more difficult. If your name is smith or jones, you could get lost easily. If you surname is uncommon, it is much easier.

Not really got into doing this though would like to. I do know that a friend of my dad was doing it unfortunately my dad passed away a few years ago and I have no idea who this friend is. However as my name is very unusual, I've found people via facebook and internet searching in Australia and America though I have no idea if we are related |

1857, my mum did it all, but through word of mouth passed down, our family history goes back to India, not sure what it was back then or how I would ever find out. Good luck with your search. |

I lust looked at DNA testing £99,
Anyone ever had it done ?
How accurate is it ?
And mitochondrial DNA testing only traces your direct maternal lineage the line that follows your mother’s maternal ancestry, Anyone know if you can trace your fathers side through DNA testing ? |

I found a complete family tree of mine in the National archives going back to 1193 and other branches going back pre-Norman conquest.
My inheritance and ancestral estates have been gambled or pissed away over the centuries..I might as well keep up the family tradition. |

1620s, but the slut name exists in the same church for over a hundred years more. It's worth getting out to record offices, as the Mormon records used at Ancestry can get mixed up, even if source records were ok. |
