More rights for animals?

"We don't always look after our fellow humans that well but should some animals get a near or equal level of protection?
Eg whales, dolphins, monkeys, who can have self awareness etc?"
All animals have self awareness.
You cannot pick and choose animals to give extra rights to based on how good they make us feel. |

It's not about us, just them. Should all animals have less rights than people?
What attributes should an animal have, in order to gain equal rights with us? |

Animal abuse doesn't carry enough weight in my opinion.
i read a story where a lass killed a dog and tired burying it in her garden and she got 4 months for it

Fair, cruelty is awful and must be stopped. However why is killing a dog worthy of prison but killing a spider or a wasp ignored? |

I think he means calves used for veal because they can't give milk when they mature, same as male chicks can't lay eggs, so are sold as fresh food for animals. |

Friesians are good at turning c grass into milk. But not very good at turning feed into beef so it doesn't make economic sense to grow on the male calfs. They used to shoot them then feed them to the hunt dogs. |

Still waiting for proof or wild cattle sheep and chickens... Did you know that if you let a chicken that has been bred for meat production get much older than 6 weeks ( which is usual age for slaughter) the breast becomes so large that they can't walk anyway. |

Chickens are not turkeys.
Buffaloes are not cows.
Young meat is sold for food. Not old.
Living in the wild is a dangerous terrifying experience.
Man invented cows. We made them from a variety of wild animals. They would not exist without man.
Lovely tabloid reactionary sentiment but it doesn't take too long of actually giving what you say serious consideration to realise basic structural flaws in your arguments. Coupled with the rather disrespectful way you write it is all getting quite predictable and boring.

Utter bollox we didn't invent cows. The current breeds of cattle are decended from Aurochs (wild cattle) which died out in the 1700's. Man has selectively bred cattle to suit his own needs whether it's to increase milk yeilds or beef production and make them more docile so they are easier to handle, with the exception of the Spanish fighting bulls which retain a lot of the characteristics of Aurochs the main one being aggression. |

All animals are descended from other animals. My point is that we made cows what they are. They are not borne of natural selection. They would not exist in their current form without mankind. |

in my googlingness:
There has already been a project that focused on rebreeding the Aurochs – in the interwar period in Germany. In 1920, two German biologists – the so called Heck brothers – attempted to recreate the Aurochs. But the Heck Cattle is not very simillar to the original Aurochs and its bulls are very aggressive to humans due to the fact that Spanish fighting cattle was used in the breeding program. That is the reason why Project Tauros started a breeding project again. “There is just one thing we can not compromise on when constructing a cattle breed; behavior towards visitors. We cannot forget that virtually all the nature reserves in Europe are visited by people who wish to enjoy nature. However, this does not have to be a problem. From what we know from the last historical sources on the Aurochs, they were not aggressive towards humans. In general, big wild herbivores are not aggressive towards humans and they tend to avoid conflicts,” emphasized Henri Kerkdijk-Otten. |

Man invented cows. We made them from a variety of wild animals. They would not exist without man.
Utter bollox we didn't invent cows. The current breeds of cattle are decended from Aurochs (wild cattle) which died out in the 1700's. Man has selectively bred cattle to suit his own needs whether it's to increase milk yeilds or beef production and make them more docile so they are easier to handle, with the exception of the Spanish fighting bulls which retain a lot of the characteristics of Aurochs the main one being aggression."
theres no point telling them. They already no theirs animals similar in the wild. they just got it wrong an wont back down. |

All animals are descended from other animals. My point is that we made cows what they are. They are not borne of natural selection. They would not exist in their current form without mankind."
The statement "We made them from a variety of wild animals" implies they where the product of cross breeding different species of animal to create a whole new species which is not true. Yes its true we wouldn't have the breeds we have today without mans meddling but that doesn't mean we wouldn't have cattle. |

Thats what this world needs, more 'rights' for creatures that have no concept of them. All this represents is another opportunity for humans to anthropomorphise.
When I see monkeys picketing Chiquita carrying self-made placards reading 'Dont steal my bananas' then Ill reconsider it.
Does the Lion consider the rights of the Antelope? No, it enjoys the free buffet. |

"animal rights charter.
rule no1; if your going to kill an animal for food it must have a longer an better life than in the wild. "
I want to kill and eat a domesticated bovine hybrid. Or a hybridised "chicken"...can you tell me where these animals exist in the wild so i can make sure that their slaughter falls within your rule? |

Years of careful cross breeding, selection and hybridization reduced to "meddling"! Lmao! |

I agree on the anthropomorphisation that we humans do with animals.
But my point for raising this thread was whether some/all animals should have more rights than they do or each other, and if some should share the same rights as humans?
I don't think we'll be communicating with many of them, in order to discuss this concept in the very near future though. But, as we understand still fairly little about many animals, are we right to condemn them to a lesser life value than us etc? Are we valuing everything based upon some aspects of intelligence (especially as intelligence is still fairly controversial, including how to measure it)?
Shouldn't, following such an argument, mean that less intelligent people have less rights? The answer to this is clearly no, but if an animal were to be assessed as having attributes equivalent to, though potentially different, to some humans, why shouldn't they have equal footing etc? |

"We don't always look after our fellow humans that well but should some animals get a near or equal level of protection?
Eg whales, dolphins, monkeys, who can have self awareness etc?"
YES
We are animals as well, we just communicate differently, and have used to tools we have differently.
We are not better then the rest of the animals we share this planet with, we are just more arrogant about our place in the animal kindom.
We also need to remember that our very survival is dependant of the rest of the animals and living creatures around us. They either provide us with the food we need or help maintain the balance needed for all creatures to survive.
So yes it is about time that we took a lot more care of our fellow creatures.

Gmb has already been approved by fda!
Some say it just short cuts the cross breeding route others that were tampering with things we've only just begun to understand!
I have no personal problem with farming animals for consumption provided there treated correctly, I think we're going to have to start doing the very same with marine animals soon or we'll end up hunting some species into extinction!.
Cattle are as far I understand bovine related breeds, that particular breed may have never been wild, like a Labrador or a Siamese cat but they have wild cousins like the ocelot or dingo. |

Using the sentience argument is how they justify the taking of life, and why abortion is legal (in some places), why we have slavery and poor pay, why we have racism, sexism, etc.
Honestly, once you start assigning value to life you are devaluing someone elses too. There ends up some scale, or grade, where some people are more worthy than others. Based on nothing more than how useful they are to certain people by having that place on the scale.
I think we have lived some time now in a world that does not understand the full implications of it's actions because we allow others to commit certain actions on our behalf, or are not even aware of what actions occurred on our behalf. This type of life is surreal, impersonalised and we can dissociate ourselves from our own actions.
How many of you would be happy to go out and kill your own food? But it comes ready mangled for you and you're happy with that because you can dissociate that it was ever a living thing. We don't eat people coz that's cannibalism and we find that unappealing but because we have given animals a lesser value we eat them, they aren't us or worthy of life so we eat them and that's fine (myself included).
To go further, how many of us even value ourselves, never mind animals? Do you truly look after your body and never harm it? Do you truly value other people, and other people are your equals, or do you hate them because something is wrong with your life and you don't want to fix yourself? I hate a couple of people, i should forgive them and love them and treat them alright but something inside of me doesn't want to.
We all know what's 'the right thing to do', and it's to act with love, but most of us aren't capable and we are the people who shouldn't be discussing this stuff really or making the rules. |

"Bacteria are bastards too. They show no respect.
Should we ban antibiotics and bleach? "
They do actually have as much right to be here as we do. But yes we devalue them as well because we see them as harmful, despite many being beneficial to us. |
